Can anyone throw any light on this: I will be going for my drivers licence in the UK in the next month/s but will be moving to Melbourne, Aus, in February..

Is there a minimum time I must have my UK licence before I am able to drive in Aus? Is there a test I must do or can I get an international licence on a New UK one? I will have had my licence for 4-5 months max. I am 19years old. Hope someone there can help as I cant find this anywhere..

if your on a whv there's no problem with you driving on your uk license as long as you want.. well as long as your visa stay allows... if your moving to australia permanently i think you have six or three months to transfer it to an aus license.. all you need to do is an eye sight test. if you google vicroads you'll find all the info you need on their website

Thanks Pommy Paul Ill look into it. I have been told I must have held my UK licence and driven in the UK for a min of 5 months before it is recognised in Aus. If this is the case I might be cutting it short as I leave the UK in December but arrive in Aus in February.

I do know that To drive, or learn to drive, in Aus I must do 100+ hours with a non P-plater before I can sit the test. This is not possible as I dont have family there to drive with.

Does anybody know what happens if you get de-merit points whilst in Australia and driving with a UK licence? This recently happened to me with a speeding ticket. I paid the fine but was not sure what would happen with the points.

i've never heard of the 5 month restriction...

this is what it says on vicroads website :)

[h=3]Temporary Visa[/h]If you have entered Victoria on a temporary visa:

  • you are not required to get a Victorian driver licence and/or learner permit
  • you may drive using your current overseas driver licence for the length of your stay
  • your driver licence must be written in English or accompanied by an English translation or international driving permit.

Bronxfan... i'm 99% sure you just pay the fine, had a mate that did the same about 6 months ago and he only had to pay the fine... think it was a higher fine though

better just add the bit that relates to a perm visa... think you're safe either way :)

[h=3]Permanent Visa[/h]If you have entered Victoria on a permanent visa issued under the Migration Act 1958 you may drive on your overseas driver licence, providing it is written in English or accompanied by an English translation or international driving permit for:

  • 6 months from the date you first entered Australia if the permanent visa was issued before you entered Australia, or
  • 6 months from the date when the permanent visa was issued to you if the permanent visa was issued to you while in Australia.

If you want to continue driving in Victoria after this time you must get a Victorian driver licence. If your overseas driver licence has expired, you will still be able to take the drive test as you are exempt from holding a learner permit for the test.

Thank you Iron Lady.. Now to complicate matters further I should explain the whole story as I now see another issue. I am 19yo Aussie that is currently working on a Gap Year in the Uk.. I am on a working holiday visa... I will return to Aus next year but had hoped to get my licence in the UK to enable me to drive back in Aus. (I am wanting to do it this way as my family live in Singapore and I do not have the ability to get the 100hours up as you need to do this prior to sitting a test). There are really 2 issues here... Am I able to Get my Licence in the UK on a WHV ?

And then the other one as above - If I get it and only have been driving for 5 months in the UK prior to returning are there any restrictions on driving on that licence??

I had hoped to spare you the details, but now see I might have trouble getting a licence on a WHV ??? Many thanks to anyone that might be able to throw some light .. I cant find this info on line
