great barrier reef

partnership

Recommended Posts

Will be in Brisbane for four weeks from mid June. We would like to see the barrier reef and maybe do some snorkling. We will have access to a car. Where is the closest and best point to do this from? How far is it from Brisbane. Don't mind doing a weekend.

Also any other things to do in Brisbane?

Its a Massive drive from Brisbane to anywhere you can snorkel the reef.. the Closest is Airlie Beach which is about 20 odd hours and cairns another 12 above that. Fly to one of these spots and you will have to do a boat tour...no snorkelling off the land really..

This thread is 4 months old and as they were coming last June it is a moot point now. If the OP provides an update on what they actually did to get on the GBR that may help others in the future with any plans.

We took a boat trip from Mackay to the Reef, it was great and less crowded than some others.

Cairns 12 hours above airlie beach? on a bike maybe, but with a car you can do it in about 7hrs, only about 600-650km, did it years ago, drove down from cairns to go sailing for 3 days... will never forget the police with their speed gun in the middle of no where

Always worth reminding the unwary about the revenue raisers.
