Hello Maria

Not long to wait, then! And then it'll be 'welcome to Queensland'! What accommodation have you arranged/will you arrange for when you arrive? Motel, holiday let, etc.? What part of the Sunshine Coast are you heading for? Do ask (before and when you're here) if we can help.

Hi PatW. Thanks for your reply. We haven't got anything arranged for when we get there yet as we are just waiting on a moving date to sell our house. Planning to fly on the 16th August all being well. Don't know where to start with accommodation as I've never been. Thinking of getting a holiday let for two weeks and using that time to find a place we like and secure a rental for a while. Have looked at a couple of websites but a lot are offering apartments. Because I have 4 kids we do need a house really. Again, all going well would like to buy asap as we will have the funds but just need to find the right area. Any advice would be very grateful.

Hi, we are hopefully moving to Sydney in September as I have a sponsorship with McDonald Jones homes as a bricklayer. Very apprehensive but also very excited! Any advice regarding renting homes, temporary accommodation, whilst we are looking, etc, would be most appreciated.

Will need 2-3 beds minimum as me, my partner and 20 year old Daughter are coming.

Thanks

Try Airbnb - pretty popular these days. The website and app are easy and a pleasure to use.

You could also google stayz and try thing like gumtree. Depends where you want to be. I think it's useful to be on a trainline of you need to get about when you arrive.

We fly into Brisbane on the 5th July. Me, my husband and 2 children age 7 and 5. We have no jobs, no family but we have got a holiday let for two weeks! Have moved out of our home today and staying with family. It's the kids last day of school tomorrow!

Welcome to Queensland Amanda! What part of Brisbane have you moved in to? Have you moved on from the holiday let? How's the job & school hunting, etc. etc. etc. going?!

Good luck :-)

Allied {pickfords we used in 2006 when we moved over. They were fairly cheap but they were good. Its important to know your stuff will be delivered correctly.......

I live in Cairns, QLD (Tropical heaven...) and i work in W.A (in mining industry in the middle of W.A (Pilbara region)

We first went to Adelaide, stayed there 6 months and moved away to Cairns as could not settle in Adelaide.

Having said that, it was difficult in Cairns too for first year or two. But........ this is the key, you HAVE to dig in, and give time to settle, adjust, get right job, get right house etc etc..........

Now........ i have a 180,000 dollar year job, a lovely 4 bed house with pool near the beck in tropical Cairns by the barrier reef. A lifestyle i could never have dreamed of in U.K. But i worked damn hard to acheive it.

You guys ok on places to stay, work schools and so on ?

Ps - much of it isn't be same. Work is still work, shopping, school etc. weekends should offer something else once all these tasks out of the way.

Winter is not a bad time to arrive as you can get all these setting up bits done when the weather isn't so good.

Weather varies between early / mid spring UK style and early summer UK style here around now. Wore a winter coat a couple of times.

Also swam in the sea and had days out.

Sydney is pretty busy.

We fly first thing on the 18th August from Heathrow so staying in hotel night before. I am currently living at my brothers as we sold our house 5 days ago. It's been good to be with him for the last week before we fly but equally it's made the wrench harder. It's really hard looking at him being brave about me moving cos I can see how much it's breaking his heart. Having a family meal together Monday before going to the airport hotel for final goodbyes. I'm absolutely dreading it, nothing can prepare you for those goodbyes. I just keep reminding myself why we are making the move that's all I can do.

Great news, Maria - house sold so you can be on your way! Yes, it is difficult finally leaving the family, but thank goodness for Skype, etc to stay in touch.

Did you get something arranged for the first couple of weeks of being in Brisbane, until you find a house to rent? Do get in contact once you land so we can have a cuppa/lunch/natter so we can meet face to face.

We are staying in a holiday rental which we have booked for 2 and a half weeks in dicky beach just as a base so we can find out what is what with hubby's job. We are going to have to use that 2 week period to look at areas we may like to live so we can commit on a longer term rental. Thank you again patw, I'm looking forward to starting our adventure and meeting new people!

Hi all, myself (38), husband (44) and 6yr old daughter fly out to our new lives in Brisbane from North Wales (UK) on 29th October!! After a long 3 years (fake-visa nightmare) things are actually happening and it's starting to feel a bit real and a bit scary.. but also toatally amazing and very exciting! ☺ We currently work as advisory primary/early years teachers but are unsure of future work plans in Queensland as yet! We are going to travel around for our first 3 weeks (Sunshine coast, city and bayside!) get to know the areas etc and hope work/homes evolve as we go! Things are getting a bit manic preparing.. there is SO much to do/plan/know! We are still clueless on buying cars, getting tax codes and registering for Medicare details etc.. but we'll work it out before we land I'm sure! (Thanks to everyone on the forum for such useful/insightful posts.. don't know how we'd cope without them!! ?) look forward to meeting fellow survivors 'on the other side!' ?

Woohoo! You're on your way! Scary and exciting.

Suggest you hire a car for the first couple of weeks, so you can get around quickly & (relatively!) easily. Can be arranged to collect from the airport.

As to Medicare & Centrelink, you can do it online: http://www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/enablers/online-services/register

Ditto getting a TFN (Tax File Number): https://iar.ato.gov.au/IARWeb/default.aspx?pid=4&sid=1&outcome=1.

Do ask if we can help with anything else. Happy to help. (Been there, done that!)

OH & I arrange 3 monthly get-togethers in a park in North Lakes (about 30 minutes' drive north of Brisbane city). The next will be Saturday 10 October but don't worry, we also have them in December and January ('cos Christmas/New Year is obviously difficult in the first few years), so let me know when you're in the country & know where you are and we can get together for a cuppa & info, if you wish.

Thanks ever so much for the help and advice. Will definitely be in touch as other questions arise and be sure to meet up once we're out there!
