ausHWC
Hey everyone, Got a simple question, hoping someone might know and help?: 1. Can we buy a car within the first 2 weeks of landing in Melbourne? or are there rules restricting temporary visa holders (we will be on a 457) from purchasing a car so quickly? And if you are a guru on these matters, what documents or items do we need to purchase a car? Many thanks in advance for any help.
Guest Guest66881
Dealers would be driving license and or passport if it's a cash deal, finance you probably will need an address etc - don't forget to change over to an Aussie license asap.
ausHWC
Thanks for info, but do you know if we can purchase a car straight away (or at least in 2 weeks) once we touch down in Melbourne? We're trying to see the cost of shipping our car against the cost of hiring till we purchase a car, for example if we are not permitted to buy a car till we have resided in Oz for at least 6 months, then the cost of hiring or leasing is going to be more than shipping our own car and it value....dilema's dilema's :chatterbox:

You need to show your money that is all....
ausHWC
Thanks, Pumpkin, Money for the car not the issue , just the timescale and if any restrictions for temporary resident visa holder to wait a 6-12 months before being allowed to do so., but I'm taking it by your account you can buy a car almost immediately when you land in Oz, thanks again. boganbear
Why on earth do you think you cannot buy a car? Of course you can. You don't even need an Aussie licence in some states. When I bought mine the dealership let me look up quotes and phone insurers from their office so I could drive it home
calNgary
Yes you can buys a car as soon as you arrive and if you wave cash at a dealer you should be able to purchase it on a UK licence, its extra paperwork for the dealer hence most request an Aussie licence. TBH getting your licence exchanged quickly will help out with lots of things as the Aussies sure like their ID checks and having a licence gives you quite a lot of points. You do need proof of address to get one though, so that could be a problem if your in temp accommodation or a hotel. Also remember you pay (i think it's) 10% of the purchase price when you swap the registration over, so bear this in mind when budgeting. Jimmy P
We bought a new car in our first week. Dealer needed to register us with qld transport so we had to provide the 100 points of ID. This was passport Medicare card and bank cards and uk driving licence. Very straightforward and far cheaper than renting for any length of time
Skippy1
Driving licence is quick to change in a Department Office. They will take your photo and everything there Just use the address of wherever you are staying and change it later when you have a more permanent address. They will then issue a change of address label for your Licence
Suzukiscottie
Temporary visa holders don't need to change their licence to an Aussie licence. Do it at a later date when it's more convenient if that's what you want to do; it's a useful ID method. Uk driving licence, proof of address, funds.
