wolvesaussie
Think a lot depends on where your living as to how much rent you will pay as that could take a big chunk of that, and that will make all the difference. Also what visa re you on are there any school fees ect.
Xenon4017
for a family of 4 ,2kids in primary school . living expense rent 1 car food kids go to public school Very tight. Try living off that now. There's generally a lot more to expenditure than the things you've listed. And if you're migrating here there are a multitude of "one-off" costs too. AJ
What he said. Depending on where you live you could be more than half that on rent, then shopping for 4 could be around $200, bills, petrol etc wouldnt be much left to do anything! 1200
1000 per wk is 52k per yr, so if this is the after tax money, how much would be before tax?

1200
I earn 75,000 and bring back 1100 a week let's assume 70k after tax =1000per wk. not sure what is the avg wages in Australia . 70k is a or low? i. earn more than that in my country but the tax rate is much lower. not sure if can earn the same in Australia. so it seems single income not work there? so, most of the Australian make lots more than 70k? wolvesaussie
Im not sure to be honest, I hear the Average wage mentioned as being 80,000 but a lot of people are on nothing like that much, then you hear of people on loads. I earned 32,000 in the UK, (6,000 above average I think) and 75,000 here.. I feel I am in the same situation in life, no better off or worse off but 75,000 is supposed to be below average. calNgary
In 7 years of being here we (family of four) havent earnt over $70k in any year and manage quite fine BUT we only have a very small mortgage going out each week. We eat out, have days out and holidays, own 3 cars, 2 motorbikes and a boat so it is possible, you would just need to pick your areas carefully. If you do have a big rent bill and have to pay school fee's it could prove tricky. Cal x

Cal x But just to be clear, do you mean 70k net income? Without delving too deeply, most people spend about 1/3 of their net income on housing, so assuming you're spending a fraction of that, it equates to earning maybe an extra 15k net per year. Personally, I think $1000 per week is the running costs for a family of 4. It doesn't leave much for big one-off purchases.

Bungo
it is impossible Sounds like the voice of experience. I see you went to Sydney, indeed it would be very hard to survive as a family in Sydney on that as so much would need to go on rent. Unfortunately I have found that when people ask the "can I live on $X" question those that think it looks short tend to keep quiet because if you say anything it is usually followed by outrage because somebody else earns that and have a very comfortable life so you must be lying or be outrageously extravagant or bad with money. calNgary
Its now 2016 so a few years since your original post and yes even i think it would be damn hard to balance a family on that figure now a days. Prices have risen lots this last couple of years ,one example is my grocery bill, its mid to high $200s per week, compared to the $150/$200 it was 2 or 3 years ago. Electric is another big rise, my bills used to be around the top $400 now they are nearer to $700 and the only thing we have changed is we have a bigger double door fridge freezer! Where did you end up moving too? Cal x
Bibbs
I couldn't do it. My outgoings are over $1200 a week for the basic bills. The girlfriend spends about the same, if not slightly more. That doesn't include food, hobbies, socialising or holidays.

Bibbs
Appears flag has been right all along it is expensive in Perth hey JockinTas? Nothing to do with Perth. As it doesn't include food, drink, socialising, holidays, petrol .. that's just bills. It all ads up. Home loan is the biggest thing to service. Water - $250 (every 2 months, $200 rates, $50 usage) Electric - $300 (2 months) Internet - $90 (1 month) Gas - $150 (3 months) House insurance - $160 (1 month) Health insurance - $120 (1 month) Foxtel - $150 (1 month) Mobile phone - $60 (1 month) Gym - $60 (1 week) Council rates - $2000 (Annual) Car Rego - $600 (Annual) So that's over $300 a week already. Then add in house loan, car insurance, maybe a car loan or personal loan. And as i said, that doesn't include food, drink, socialising, holidays, petrol .. I don't doubt that it's do-able for some people. But I'm not sure I could. And that's without kids and all the expense that comes with schooling. Skani
Nothing to do with Perth. I suspect some of it is to do with Perth. Those charges for water, internet, house insurance, council rates and gym in particular seem extraordinarily high.
Guest
Does tpg not exist in Perth? $59.99 here for ultd internet and phone... $60 a week for gym? I pay $16 and get child care , swimming pool, tennis courts etc. Flag you were right :notworthy: You really should ring foxtel and threaten to leave . We do this every 3-6 months and get reduced to 49.99 and have all the sport, drama and entertainment channels. Only missing movies.
Bibbs
Does tpg not exist in Perth? $59.99 here for ultd internet and phone... Unfortunately not in my neighborhood. NBN is coming next year. That's with Vivid Wireless. Quite expensive, but had a few good extras. $60 a week for gym? Yes. But that's joint membership. I pay $16 and get child care , swimming pool, tennis courts etc. massive gym, x2 pools, tennis, squash, courses, spa, sauna, steam, bar, resturant etc. You really should ring foxtel and threaten to leave . We do this every 3-6 months and get reduced to 49.99 and have all the sport, drama and entertainment channels. Only missing movies. Phoned them up this week. Multi room, HD, all channels. Few BoxOffice films, I could save $10 by removing music/kids .. but hardly seems worth it.
