i realy do thik it is luck of the draw with AHPRA, i only sent the information requested, but i did have a full breakdown of all hours in my transcript and i also sent the course syllabus, i also added all my CPD courses to my CV and put very detailed descriptions of all the jobs i hav had and what was involved. I didn't get asked for anything extra and had my eligibility letter about 3 weeks after they got verification from the NMC (which took forever)

I also didnt do IELTS and just wrote a stat declaration stating i was tuaght in english

It's good to hear that some people are getting theirs sorted gives me hope that they do eventually get it right :) reading some posts I thought it was the senders that had made mistakes and left things out etc so I read and re read the application form and thought I'd gotten everything:( think being qualified 18 years didn't help... Far too must history to go back on ;)

Hi there, i have my visa through already. Its a sponsored perm residency visa, i wanted something abit more secure with having the kids!! the job is at Joondalup hospital pay scales are good cant remember the web site i seen them on but i will be earning basic $65000 thats not encluding enhanced rates ie nights , evenings weekends etc. do you know if the references have been taken up yet? good luck and anything i can help with let me know x nadia

Hi Nadia, I have been offered job by Sydney Hospital and they are willing to offer PR (ENS 121) however I am bit worried that for AHPRA registration I haven't done either skill assessment or English test but I have 7 years NHS experience. Have you done skill assessment or IELTS for PR (ENS 121) visa.

Appreciate your reply

Hi Ranjana,

You need both the skills assessment and IELTS for a Pr visa, it is the visa class I am hoping to get when I get a job. Tracey

you only need skills assessment amnd IELTS if you are going for a 175 or a 176 visa, if you are getting a sponsored PR visa such as the 121ENS or the RSMS then you don't need to do them

Hi I'm Brenda

Feel like a bit of an AA too... been reading up an not saying much :) im married, no kids no mortgage and in the middle of a pg dip in health visiting. I Have been qualified as a rgn with over 5yrs exp in cardic medicine and cardiac icu nursing. We have decided to head to oz now at end sept/start oct pending completion date of the course etc. My hubby qualified as a building surveyor here and got laid off due to the usual reasons of late!!! he has now been out of BS work 2yrs now at the end of the month, although he's had bits an pieces of work to keep us going however its never consistent. So my brother and his girlfriend are in perth a year and love it..and we've quite alot of friends who have went in the past yr..who also love it. After alot of talking will we/wont we's...we have decided..we will!!! I'm really excited, although I'm not fussed on going back into the icu field again..I think im enjoying my life out of hospital lately whilst studying in the community, an i really woulod love something different...am i asking too much!!! Ive been looking into nursing in the mines. however cannot seem to find any info from those who have been there done it etc!! so any info would be greatly appreciated! I've read few websites saying work 8days 6 off FIFO. I wouldn't mind that..I think!! it would be more of an OH role..which i gather for some of the roles as long as you have trauma etc experience..that you'l be trained up in other areas such as pre med checks, health and safety etc. It does seem appealing..especially the rate of pay :) of course i am intereseted in what im studying (health visiting) however im not to sure on theri employment of newly qualified hv's (child and maternal health nurses) with no experience in the area plus it is a community based job. i feel as we are going to earn that i would be best using my qualifications and experience to my advantage to gain a higher income. any suggestions or reccomendations would be welcome..or indeed point me out if im going wrong. need to look into the visa thing next...thats another ballgame!!! ok thanks for taing the time to read this...and maybe hopefully drop me a line !! :)

Hi Charl,

I am a newly qualified mental health nurse and I qualified in September 2011 too :) I am too gaining the 12 months exp that is needed. Its so rubbish waiting it out isnt it!! Iv been waiting 5 long years. I cant wait to start the process though even if it is the new one. I spoke to Ian Harrop migration agents the other day as this is who we will be using and they seem to think it may make things a bit easier as us nurses are protected species in Australia apparently :) There is a quicker way by going 457 but i dont think its as beneficial or secure. Lots of love Laura xx

it totally is but not for long  time for applying will come around in no time. Oh are you getting your skills assessed before putting in for your visa? Will you be using an agent? Im interested to know of ANY ways we can speed things up. Have you got any advice?? x

Yes I will be to both of those questions and the ielts too!! I will probably do it in the summer! Wer going to go with go Matilda. But the one you are with comes recommended too doesn't he? Where are you looking at going?

I was going to wait for my agent to do it but i might start soon then. How do you get your skills assessed? Well i got a job offer in Sydney but its way too expensive so were looking between Brisbane and Surfers. Yeah Ian Harrop, he is supposed to be really good but think his price is nice too. What kind of nurse are you? Are you moving alone or with somebody? Do you know where you want to move? x

Bringing this over from another thread as it may be of interest to anyone thinking of migration to brizzy (and now bumping as it may be of use to new members). This was in answer to someone who would like to gain further skills other than aged care, but equally, it applies to anyone wanting to learn a new discipline other than their current employ.

Hi, Bridget here, Kev's wife.

I have worked at The Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH) on Brisbane's northside for nearly 17 years. I secured a job within 3 days of arriving from UK as an "On Call" nurse then within a month was on the permanent "nursing support unit" which is a group of nurses who are permanently employed on a roster (off duty as it used to be called in UK) and are used to fill in for sick leave and high accuity needs. I am tellin you this to highlight how easy it was to gain employment at TPCH when I arrived. I then got a permanent position on the Cardiology and Heart failure and transplant unit 3 months later, having never worked in Cardiology.

There is a real culture of encourageing nurses to gain different experience at TPCH. So if you came over here and got a job in one of the aged care units she would have no trouble at all up skilling to an acute ward as it is very positivly encouraged. At TPCH we have a large aged care sector. There is a 30 bedded Geriatric and Evaluation Unit (for slow stream rehab and people awaiting assessment for nursing home or ACAT assessment for their level of care needs. There is also a 26 bed acute rehab unit for all sorts of rehab needs- a very interesting and dynamic unit. Also there is the dementia unit which is tied in with community and does assessments, placement and respite. Also under the umbrella of Qld Health is a huge aged care facility at Sandgate called Eventide, right on the waterfront, and another smaller facility called Ashworth House, not far from TPCH.

So as you can see, there is plenty on offer for aged care. I do some shifts as Duty Nurse Manager at TPCH, which includes covering emergent leave in all areas, and I can assure you that we are always looking for nurses to work, in aged care and acute.

TPCH is a lovely facility to work at, and I am biased I guess, but it is a fairly small place compared to large general hospitals and maintains a friendly and supportive culture. We have just undergone expansion from being a speciality cardiothoracic hospital to having a general surgical unit and two general medical wards. Our Intensive care unit takes all the post Cardiac surgery patients, post heart and lung transplant patients and a lot of general ICU admissions. We dont take head or spinal injuries as the Princess Alexandra Hospital on the Southside specialises in spinal injuries. Our orthopeadic unit does all elective ortho procedures and will expand to take emergency admission pretty soon. ................edit: it now has, since I first wrote this

I guess I am selling the place well but I really mean it. If you are thinking of coming to Brisbane (northside) then I would highly recommend TPCH.

Please feel free to pose any questions that you may have, either by pm or my work Email address is bridget_dickinson@health.qld.gov.au

regards,

Bridget.

Hi there nurses,

I'm a fairly new member and hoping to immigrate to Australia in the next few months if I manage to secure myself an employer sponsor visa. We are willing to go to any of the major cities but our first and desired choice is Brisbane. I'm a general medical nurse with 6 years experience and really struggling to get a job in Brisbane. Now have cast the net a bit wider to other cities as havent been successful due to Brizzy being well sought after and me being so general and not in a speciality. So fingers crossed we get something before my AHPRA reg runs out!!

Anyway wanted to ask, this has probably been asked a million times before but what are the shift patterns like in Oz. Do they do the 8 hour shifts or 12 hour shifts and whats the patient to nurse ratio's. Also wanted to ask I heard a rumor that Melbourne were increasing patient to nurse ratios and the nurses were up in arms about this? By the way any info and advice is welcome with where we are at this stage of immigrating. Isis

Just to let you all know, I emailed Brisbane and was told that the state hospitals are not sponsoring overseas nurses so it depends on which visa you are going over on. I have got a job offer in Sydney, 40 minutes from the CBD and in looking at property, it isn't any dearer that any of the other states, in fact Perth was more expensive. Tracey

I am a mental health nurse working in the community with older people and also have a strong interest and experience in dementia care. Are there any jobs (preferably sponsored) for me in Perth?

My husband is in IT - likewise are there any jobs for him in Perth.

Yeah Tracey I got that as well that the public hospitals in Brisbane arent doing the 457 visa and the private ones looks like they only taking on highly skilled nurses with specialities. I have applied all over now so fingers crossed I get something. Good luck with the job in Sydney and do keep me posted:) When do you leave? Isis
