Moving to North Brisbane

Hi we’re a family of 5 (boy 13, girl 5 and baby boy <1) moving to North Brisbane July 8th, initially staying in Narangba. I work in research (health) and my husband was a joiner/carpenter, but will be graduating as a civil engineer next month. It’s taken 5 years in the planning to get to this stage and we can’t believe we’re finally making the move! We’re a very sociable family, and would love to hear from others currently in the Brisbane area or who are making the move there soon. Look forward to hearing from you

......a few in narangba...........a lovely place IMO.......Which has grown considerably in the last 10 years or so....

.......but has managed to retain its charm......

.......plenty of good schools.........and shops....

.......also bike paths for the children to be able to bike to school......

.......it has a new train station........so getting to Brisbane is easy.....

........and easy access to the highway......north and south......

........best of luck with your move...........tink x

Hi,

We're moving to Brisbane at the end of this month - we're a family of 6, (girl 6, boy 4, girl 3, girl 18months). Not sure where we're going to be living yet as we're moving into a serviced apartment in the first instance, but it would be nice to have some friendly faces around :)

Rosie, x

Lovely, what date do you fly? Where abouts is your short term apartment? We fly out June 30th, but will not arrive in Brisbane until July 8th as we're stopping in Dubai and Singapore on the way :) How are you all feeling about the move? Yvonne x

We moved to Brisbane at the end of February. We're currently living in Bridgeman Downs which is about 20 min drive from Narangba. We've got a boy aged 11 and a girl of 8.

We'd love to hear from you when you arrive.

Good luck with the move.

Hi, We're flying out on the 1st June, doing it pretty direct (which is going to be great fun with 4 under 7, not). Feeling a bit nervous at the moment, but sure it will be fine! I think the apartment will be pretty central so that my husband can walk to work, but then I think we may move to the clay fields/ascot/hamilton area, but it really depends on schools.

How are your preparations going? I think we're pretty much there now, house here let, car sold, animals rehomed, notice given to schools etc. Visas came through last week and flights are hopefully being booked today. Just got lots of organising for the packers now!

We've stayed in central Brisbane which is very hilly, so if that's where your staying make sure you take your hiking boots ;) Some great things to do with the children there, it has its own beach/lagoon iat the Southbank and some lovely parks/botanical gardens, great for a city!

We still have lots to do, but the flights and initial accommodation are booked, I've almost finished de-cluttering the house, not sure whether to sell or let our house yet, we keep changing our mind! Excited, but nervous about leaving all of my family and friends behind....wondering what I will do without my mum ;) I will be leaving behind my dog that I've had for 14 years, too old to travel :(

That's great that your husband has a job, were a little worried on that front, as neither of us have anything lined up yet.

I would say were just starting to settle in here.

We found leaving family and friends harder than we had thought, and particularly the last week before we left was awful. I think that all made the first few weeks here particularly difficult. Things have got a lot better now. The kids quickly settled into school which has made a huge difference. Seeing them happy has definately helped us.

Getting our things over has also helped. We still have some boxes to unpack and the house is a bit of a mess, but we are getting there. We also brought out our 2 cats who arrived about 3 weeks ago, so the family is feeling complete now.

We are definatley getting out and about more than we did in the UK, although now we've got the kids in a number of sporting clubs and dancing etc we are spending a lot of time ferrying them around. What we have found is that most activities happen before or after school or on Saturday which leaves Sunday free for family time.

Hope your preparations for the move go smoothly, with so much happening the time will fly and you'll be here before you know it. Debbie

thanks Debbie, the time is flying by, 6 week today! I'm trying not to think about leaving family and friends, although I'm sure I will find it very difficult,. I'm looking forward to more outdoor family time, especially as the weather has been so poor here this year.

I'll stay in touch with you all and hopefully meet up when were all out there . Yvonne x

hi there, thank you that would be nice, how long have you been out there and how are you finding north lakes? we have looked at that area as a potential place to settle, although there's a few on here that are quite negative about it!

It's shaping up to be an "OK place" compared to how it used to be, but I personally, remain negative about it, mainly because blocks have become much smaller, newer builds have the tenants/occupiers packed in like sardines, and I think it's over-priced considering how far out you are from the CBD. Generally, the further out you are, the cheaper the prices should be, but North lakes seems to have bucked the trend due to their advertising and the interest shown by less knowledgeable migrants of other options...................In a nutshell, add the commute costs and time (why drive to a rail station when you can buy near a rail station?) to the property prices, and there are much better/affordable/convenient housing(s) closer in, and a wider choice of amenities.....................it will eventually be a city unto itself, and with it will come the benefits, but that will be a good way off yet. Those already there, will, in the main, love it............they have to, once they've invested in the place.

Hey guys, re North Lakes, we moved here couple of months ago. Haven't bought anything so have the choice to move elsewhere if we want to. JohnDoe is right , the houses are tightly packed and the gardens are not very big, I suppose it depends what you want, we really like it and once the train station opens in 2016 it will be even better. These days I'm a lazy devil, so I want everything on my door step...schools,shops etc.. As long as we can fit a pool in the garden of whatever we eventually buy I'm not too fussed on having a big garden. Maybe it's the years of maintaining one in the UK and the fact that we tend to go out to the beaches. Horses for courses and now I have said all that I am bound to come across somewhere else that we fall in love with....typical woman lol

Yeah north lakes definitely has mixed reviews. We love it here and are really settled its close to all amenities and with the shopping centre planned to be completed by the end of 2015 with cinema, entertainment and more shops its definately growing! We chose north lakes as thought it would be easier to meet people and socialise and find activities for the kids close by which we have done. We are only renting so not bothered about house prices etc and can move if we wanted. We are at the front of north lakes near the lake which are older properties and more established. We have a 920 sqm plot so we are not squashed but I know the newer builds at the back are a lot smaller. There is also mango hill across the road from north lakes which is still close to all amenities but doesn't seem quite as squashed as the back of north lakes or if you are wanting more rural type area then narangba, kallangur, dakabin and those sort of areas are close by. Until you get here though and have a look for yourself and get a feel for the different areas its difficult as it really does boil down to personal choice in the end and what you are wanting from the area you want to live.

Yes, pinkpiggy, I agree as you seem to have one of the first builds. It was nice when it first started up....................big houses, big plots, at decent prices and being near the lake is picturesque. The plots at the back end are plagued with mozzies due to damp bush behind. We went to a barbie there a while back and had to move indoors, even with repellent on...............they were biting through our shirts!

I probably sound like I'm giving it a really bad press but it ain't all bad as many seem to love it there, and I'm just trying to emphasise that there could be better/cheaper options for those not fully committed to the place................I've always said that if you choose a place as a 'stopgap", then it's dead money when you do decide to move again.................always try, where posiible, to secure a rental/purchase where you want to be long term as constanly moving around till you do, is time consuming, a hassle, and costly.

Hi Geraldine

Thanks for the information, it's helpful. It does sound a little like where we live at the moment, I would prefer to be near my children's school as I feel they will have more friends that way, we live in the next street at the moment and my daughter has lots of children to play with :)

What age were your boys when you moved out? I have a 13 year old boy who is not too keen on leaving home, I'm a little worried about how he will deal with missing family.

It certainly sounds like it has great potential, plenty for families, which is always a plus! As I said in the last post it sounds like where we are at the moment, with plots getting smaller, but very family friendly. We've got a short term let in Narangba with the idea that it will be easy to access to check out the likes of North Lakes and Mango Hill. Hopefully you can help me out with the low down on all these places when I arrive ;)

Thanks, I will certainly take all of that into consideration when we are looking for somewhere, and I agree, rather get it right in the first instance, for stability for the children than for anything else....and at all costs will avoid mosquito prone areas!!!

Hope your settling in well.

We've sent you a PM with numbers, but you may not have picked it up yet. I didn't realise PM's didn't give e-mail notification so we did not get yours for 3 weeks.

Debbie
