Hi Sarah & Ben

Have you found anywhere to stay?

Weve found a nice apartment in Preston called rydges residence, to hopefully stay for a few months while we find our feet! Weve not got jobs yet so bit scared about that buy will hopefully be ok.

Just sorting out our shipping at present, I didnt think it would be so difficult!

Would be great to know how your getting on....

Hi we land in Oz 5th march..... Staying in Sydney with family for first couple of months then moving to Melbourne. Spent plenty of time in Oz but never been to Melbourne. Partner has landed a job there. Looking forward to what Melbourne has to offer us. Good luck with the last of your packing etc,I will be glad of a decent nights sleep when all this stress is over, we too are busy packing, cleaning, saying goodbye etc, lets hope it's all worth it :-))

So much to do as this is the last weekend before the packers come. Also, taking the dogs to the vets tomorrow for boosters. Then a weekend of socialising as the goodbyes have started already!

Its exciting but at the same time nerve wracking isn't it!! Dreading the goodbyes!! We are up with my parents this weekend but will also have a week with them before we fly on the 7th. Where are you flying from?

Our packers don't come until the end of march, are you staying with family until you fly?

We are taking our cat with us, who are you using to ship your dogs?

My endless list of things to do is slowly getting shorter, definately had some sleepless nights though!!

We spent 18 months in Sydney a few years ago but have never been to Melbourne so its going to be all new again, its a great adventure getting to know a new place.

i think the worst bit is saying goodbye, especially to elderly parents and in laws! Trying to persuade my parents to come out at the end of the year for their 50th wedding anniversary and when we sell the house our plan is to pay for their tickets as a present for their anniversary. So at least when we leave I can say see you in a few months.

i have bought my mum an iPad so that she can keep in touch so she has spent the last few months getting to know how to use it!! My 86 yr old mother in law also has one !!!!

Good luck with your move and enjoy Sydney.

Thank you Louise, my to do list is getting shorter!!!! We have friends in Sydney but no one in Melbourne apart from an old family friend of my parents but they don't actually live in Melbourne, lucky you having your family there, I'm really going to miss my mum and dad.

Do you know where in Melbourne you might settle? We have arranged a short term let just north of Berwick, hubby will be working in Burwood. So I will be spending my time looking for a long term let.

We also don't know anybody in Melbourne, strange feeling isn't it! Paul will be working in a place called Hallam. We are looking at the Bayside area I think, Frankston/Brighton/ Hampton area but without ever having been its hard to say. We are having 4 days in Melbourne the wk after we arrive in Sydney to have a look around.....think finding somewhere to live will be the hardest part!

keep in touch, let me know how you get on :-)

If you are going to be working in Hallam, then the southern suburbs would be good places to start looking. Narre Warren is the next suburb and then Berwick and Berwick is popular with Brits. If you wanted to be near the beach then I would look at Patterson Lakes, Chelsea Edithvale that would have good links to Hallam. Also Frankston South, Mornington, Mount Martha not a bad run to Hallam. I worked in Dandenong for 13 years driving from the Peninsula and it took me about thirty minutes to get to the office from Somerville. Hallam is the industrial area next to Dandenong and also has residential areas but probably better to try the other suburbs I have mentioned. Brighton, Hampton etc are nearer to the city very expensive and more difficult and longer commute to Hallam.

Hi petals

thank you so Much for the info.....yes after researching the real estate agents I thought it looked like Brighton etc were pretty expensive. Just booked to stay 4 days in Brighton the 2nd wk we arrive which will give us a good base to look round the area. My partner will be working in Hallam. I will be doing agency childcare work to begin with so will need somewhere with good transport links.

thank you again....its always nice to hear advice from someone in the know!

Morning Louise,

we initially wanted to be close to the beach but realised we could get more for our money further inland a bit. We will be staying in Harkaway for the first 12 weeks. I have been looking at places in Berwick and you seem to get a decent sized place for a reasonable amount! But I'm not sure about the commute from Berwick to Burwood, hubby will soon find out!!! Also Berwick seems to be a good central location.

I also work in childcare but have been seriously thinking of a career change because I have been doing it for 25 years!! But I don't know what else I would like to do or enjoy doing. Have you sent your CV to any agencies yet?

I haven't sent my cv off yet, going to see where we end up living first then look into work, I think the working with children check can take a while to arrive, you will need to pick up a form from a post office in Victoria to apply. This is a new thing as I didn't need one when we were in Sydney in 2007/2008.

i approached an agency ages ago to see if they recognised my NNEB and they had heard of it and agreed that it was diploma level, will wait and see what happens!

Berwick does look nice but will wait and see what we think when we arrive.

where are you flying from? Who with??

I haven't sent my cv off yet but will be over the next wk(if get time) I was getting really confused when researching it seems childcare in oz is having a shake up, come 2014 everyone needs to be cert 111 trained or above. When I contacted randstad a while ago they advised me to get qualifications assessed(BTEC National Diploma in early childhood)first to get the actual BTEC level, this was done through AEI NOOSR and took about 10wks to come back, you can get this done in OZ though, and then secondly to get the early years part asseessed through ACECQA, which as yet I haven't done as only just recieved certificate to say BTEC is equivalent to Cert IV.

again this can all be done in oz and can still work but prob as unqualified which is a few dollars less an hour, again who you speak to probably advises different things so its all a bit confusing!

but I thought better to be on the safe side and have the paperwork incase I see a permanent job to apply for......

hope this hasn't confused you more :-)

Hi everyone,

Hope everything is going well with your packing and saying goodbyes. We move to Melbourne the end of June, although very exciting, very daunting aswell......it's all becoming real! We have 2 children aged 9 and 11, does anyone have children if so how are they feeling about the move? Sympathise with you all at this time, the last few weeks must be the hardest, can't say I'm looking forward to it

The commute from Berwick to Burwood wouldn't be too bad for your hubby - either up the Monash freeway and up Warrigal road, or across the back way, through Lysterfield and along Burwood Highway :)

On the childcare front - the city of Casey (where Berwick is) has the highest birthrate in the country - so lots of childcare centres around :)

Hallam is near us - the commute across from 'Bayside' (Brighton etc) would be nasty, so I'd seriously avoid it if you can :) There are loads of rentals around Narre Warren and Berwick, I'm sure you won't have too much trouble.

Thanks Jo, we have been looking at real estate.com at Berwick and it seems nice, also been looking at Ferntree Gully which would be closer to work for the hubby, what are your thoughts on this area?

Upper Ferntree Gully, Upwey, Tecoma and Belgrave are LOVELY!!!!! Not a lot of rentals around, but it is a fabulous area at the foothills of the 'hills' :)

Ferntree Gully is pretty damned good too :)

The train line (Belgrave) is great - from Upper Gully to the city it's about 55 minutes on the train. Anywhere around the hills seems to have a bit more of a 'villagey' feel - it is a particular type of person who's attracted to the area (yep me included).

BUT - you need to remember that you're on the edge (or in) a high-fire risk area, so you need to be prepared for that. However that's also a good thing - the area has a lot of active CFA (volunteer fire brigade) stations, which can be a great way to meet people if you join up. (Plus volunteering is always a good thing)

Shopping-wise, Knox City is a short drive away, Berwick is a quick drive too. And there are loads of quirky shops, cafes etc :)
