MARYROSE02
Hi Emma, I'll be working out Richmond/Windsor way, but not sure where I'll be living as of yet. Perhaps close to work or maybe I'll look for somewhere around the Hills region. I'm certainly up for a little pomsinoz meetup so definately keep me in the loop. Good luck with all the prep and moving. G I like Windsor, which is one of the original 'Macquarie towns' - can't think what the others are - Pitt Town, Richmond? I shall have to Google it. Anyway, Windsor has a station, character, plenty of pubs and restaurants, supermarket, station. The Hills is OK but no station and Sydney is not a place that is pleasant to commute long distances, especially driving. I tried driving to Penrith from Surry Hills a couple of times - outside rush hour too - and it was still awful. 55-60 kilometres, 40 sets of lights on Parramatta Road (yes I did count them!) to Concord, where the motorway starts, then more sets of lights from where it ends to Penrith proper. I might do a separate post about the Macquarie Towns as it's a long one!
ggavy
Hi Mary Rose. Yes, I'm getting quite a few recommendations for Windsor and it is probably my first choice at the moment (at least based on internet research and from a practicality point of view (id love to be able to cycle to work). Id love to see your report in the Macquarie towns. I'll keep an eye out for it. Sorry for hijacking your original post Emma! G
Robertsclan
Thanks so much MaryRose02 - I've read so many of your posts as you really cheer me and get me excited about the getting over to Sydney. This is needed big time when the nerves kick in re uprooting everyone! Will check out those train lines. we are thinking of doing the unusual thing of getting an apartment or small townhouse closer in to negate the commute. MrRobertsclan's Aunty lives in Lane Cove and surprisingly there seems to be a few affordable places there but I could be just researching poorly. Will seek her advice. Once we are over there we can recce properly and get a good feel for areas. I think Castle Hill is about 30 mins by train to st Leonard's and Hornsby about 40mins - does that seem right? Thanks again for input x

Thanks again for input x http://www.131500.com.au I just did a transport check on Castle Hill and it appears to take well over an hour - by bus, as there's no train there. Castle Hill is a lovely area but, personally, I would not like to be commuting from there. Entirely different if my job was up there, of course, and some people enjoy a long bus ride. St Leonards to Hornsby is much easier, and quicker, as it's on the same rail line as St Leonards. Lane Cove to RNS is about half an hour too. MARYROSE02
I thought I'd so a search on the travel times from Narrabeen - where I lived in the 80's - to Manly Wharf. Narrabeen is not a bad place to live. I prefer it to Dee Why and Brookvale, although they are closer to Manly. JonnoA
Hi Emma (and everyone else) I just posted a similar thread, should have looked here first! Seems a lot of people vacating our Sunny shores for brighter climes at the mo! Im moving over in Feb, around Sydney and looking at flats fairly close to Bondi / Darling / George St. 29, from London and moving over alone so would be great to meet similar folk! MARYROSE02
Lane Cove would be OK by bike, not sure about Hornsby, would depend how fit you are! I have friend who used to cycle from Pennant Hills to Garden Island (Kings Cross) but he was 'A' Grade cyclist and used to go on long detours to make the ride more of a challenge. Come to think of it, it is almost all downhill from Hornsby to the City so OK one way but not the other. And many of the roads are still not pleasant to cycle on. northshorepom
Thanks for these train times really helpful - Hornbsy also on train line our cousins in Artarmon. OH wants to cycle if poss - do you think that would be doable from lane cove? or even hornsby? LaneCove to St Leonards is walkable, let alone cyclable - it's no distance. Hornsby to St Leonards is certainly doable on a bike for a fit cyclist, it's about 20km. However the only feasible choice of route is straight down the Pacific Highway, which is not for the faint-hearted. And not recommended at night, lights or not, so in winter you're probably better off on the train. But weekly season tickets on the train are pretty cheap so that's no real hardship. There's a lot more uphill going back in the evening, I reckon it would take a reasonably fit cyclist about 45 mins in the morning and about 55 on the way home EDIT: I should add that my regular commute I do either 13km of that 20 (from Wahroonga to Chatswood) or almost the same distance (18km) from Wahroonga to North Sydney, I've based my times on that (Chatswood takes me about 21-23 minutes in, 30-33 minutes home depending on traffic, how fit I feel and traffic lights. North Sydney takes me 34-38 in, 45-50 home). I don't do it in winter for safety reasons. Worst section is at Pymble (steep hill, narrow lanes, 2 lane drops) unfortunately it's the one section you really can't avoid with a detour unless it's a long and even hillier one, so I almost always end up going straight up the highway
mevans12
Hi I work at the Royal North Shore Hospital in St Leonards. I live in Collaroy on the Northern Beaches. Takes me 2 buses to get to work, one from Collaroy to Neutral Bay and then from there to St Leaonards. On a good day can take 50 mins but usually no more that 70 mins. Cheers. MARYROSE02
Yes, I hate commuting. Can't you get a 'transfer' to Mona Vale? Ironically enough, I moved from Narrabeen to Surry Hills because I hate commuting to Garden Island. Surry Hills to Penrith for my last job was not so bad but still a hassle - up to 1 1/2 hours each way, but at least it was by train and only one journey. Emma83
Hi JonnoA Good to see more people who are moving over. I had been avoiding the page for a few days after a scary phone call telling me my job might not be there any more but had confirmation the job is ready and waiting for me today so full steam ahead with planning the big move . I'm 29 and my partner is 30. All being well will be over in March/April and working in Manly so looking a suburbs around there to live. We are really keen to meet others going over to meet for a beer. By far the scariest bit of moving over there for me is the not knowing people. So what prompted you to make the move? For those already over there if we are working in Manly what suburbs would you recommend that are affordable and commutable? We have been looking at places like Dee Why which looks nice but its hard to really know what an area is like from reading about it on the internet. Any info would be appreciated mevans- I have been chatting to someone who has just been offered a job at Royal North Shore; in pediatrics I think. have you got any advise I can pass on? Any info would be appreciated Any of them up the coast from Manly - loads of buses from everywhere. You'll pay more closer to the coast but if you're a couple with no kids I reckon it's worth it. Think flat rather than house for best value Beaches and suburbs are a personal thing really. The Northern Beaches are fantastic, I like them more generally the further away from the city as a beach proposition as they're quieter and mostly with green cliffs/headlands as a backdrop - Palm Beach, Whale Beach, Bilgola & Warriewood are my faves but everyone's different. Brookvale is a busy and noisy commercial district and probably best avoided. Dee Why is a good compromise for many - it has shops and a "town centre" of sorts rather than just being a strip on the main road, but the beachfront itself is off the main drag and quieter. I don't like Dee Why beach that much myself - expensive parking, it's a bit windswept, gets a bit busy - but the facilities (rock pools, loads of cafes/restaurants) are brilliant and the walks over the rocks and up to Long Reef (which I love) are great If you can swing it, Manly itself would be a really good place to live but it can be pricey. Living there you have the option of easily getting into town too on the ferry Good luck!

We are pretty keen on getting somewhere close to the coast. At least for a while and we have been looking a flats in the main. I personally would love to live in Manly (my partner has never been) but I think it is a bit out of our price range. We don't have kids so don't need a big place but we do want a spare room as the only way some of our friends and family will be able to afford to visit us if is they don't have to pay for accommodation as well as flights. I have seen some affordable flats in areas like Curl Curl and Freshwater too which look nice but I think your right it is a personal thing and realistically we won't really know where we want to live until we get there and start looking. It is good to hear other peoples opinions and get advise though as it will give us a good starting point when we get here. Does anybody have any advice of best ways to find temporary accommodation when we first arrive?
Robertsclan
From what I've read up on so far I think short term holiday lets seem to be what most people do but am keen to let me know if other options. Gail Moss
Hi all, It's great to reads all of your posts. Yesterday I found out where I'll be staying when I land on the 24th Jan, I'm being put up in Mosman for a few weeks. Then I've got to go hunting for something more permanent. As I'm moving on my own it'd be good to catch up with a few of you when we're all out there. Anyone fancy an ale at the Lord Nelson? Gail.

Hi Apimmental I have been looking into rentals but as we don't know exactly when we are going yet I can't do much more than look. We will be looking around the Northern beaches as thats where we will be working and there seems to be a lot of places available. Having more difficulty finding affordable short term accommodation but I will keep doing the research and as soon as we get dates I will look to book something short term whilst we look at properties.
