Petals
In Australia and hour and half outside of a city will really be in the middle of no where .. And I mean nothing but your town If this the case I must be living in a dream, hope all the houses and shops disappear when I wake up I would like to be in the middle of nowhere. To answer the question of early teens activities I suppose it depends what activities they want, if they want tennis, football, soccer, cricket, baseball, gymnastics, swimming, rugby and many other sports they are well catered for here in Australia. Computer clubs, game playing, computer that is well catered for. Hanging around street corners happens but not taken up by a lot of young ones. Oh and then there is music and youth orchestras to join.

Johndoe
We are going back because there is not as much to do for earlyteens etc and it's soo spread out you have to travel to things..more on the doorsteps in uk. Also hate spiders!! I've fostered more than 50 "early teens" and they've never been short of things to do. Obviously the things that they do/did are totally different to the things that you, or your kids expect/ed from Australia. I'm sure there's plenty "on the doorsteps" in the UK which for my family, is one of the attractions of Oz...............that we're not "living in others' pockets" all the time. The only thing on my doorstep back where I lived, was used condoms, dogshit and vomit...................we had the odd bottle of milk though.................when it didn't get nicked. That said, the in-laws had Millendreath beach on their doorstep and we spent as much time as we could there, despite the 6 hr drive...........which is probably why the distances here don't bother us.
