  1. Just popped out for some lunch and after a damp grey start it's now lovely blue skies and sunshine, that's what I love about Perth weather the suns never to far away, learnt very early on you never go out without your sunnies regardless of what it looks like.

It was actually started by labour in 2009 and implemented in 2010, so it was labours idea in the first place. You have to be very naive to actually think any government would honestly try  to send people back to the West indies when they came over in the 60s.

Really? Dexter Bristol spent the last year trying to stop himself getting deported, he lost his job and was unable to get any benefits he moved to the UK in 1968!! It's OK though he died so the government don't need to worry about him.

  3. We have only holidayed in Australia so far, as has been said it is that vast it would take a lifetime to explore, Western Australia is an amazing state from the lush green of the South to the red dirt up North fantastic place to explore, we enjoy camping and it's great getting off the beaten track in a 4wd something you couldn't dream of doing back in the UK.

We are fortunate to get more annual leave here and try to make the most of it by getting away as often as possible even just long weekends away, we do have a holiday booked later in the year to Japan as it's somewhere I have always wanted to visit and my daughter is studying Japanese at school.

    Not done Bali yet either.

The Paralympic competition was separate in 2014 so you are not comparing apples with apples there.

The Paralympic results from 2014 would not have changed the result one bit England and Aus were pretty much like for like with medals. in para events.

There wouldn’t be any other suitable category for it so it’s placed by the moderators in the one deemed most suitable. Unfortunately we can’t have a category for every single subject matter, reporting the post saying it needs to be moved to UK chat I’m afraid was not considered as that doesn’t fit the subject matter either and as it’s about a study on Prostate Cancer, whether the study would have been done in China, India, America etc it would have still been placed in health

Thanks I was the one that reported it saying is there a better place on the forum, I did say when reporting it there was absolutely nothing wrong with the content I just felt it would get more replies in a UK section as it was an NHS related post. Anyway well done PB for bringing it up.

Same reasons Australia failed to come close to England last time around.

Failed to come close? There was 9 gold medals in it at the end of the 2014 games? There's currently 34 xD I know that will change over the closing days though.

Scotland were hosts and going on the theory the hosts do well they didn't actually do that well they did better on the GC xD

  7. Enjoy, that area is nice as @Phoenix16 says Coogee beach is lovely, I swim there twice a week during Spring an Summer before work.

I don't think you will have a need to go there because none have anything of interest to see but avoid the suburbs NE of Cockburn Central in particular Spearwood, Hamiton Hill and Yangebup.

iam a brummie saurer , but brum is overlooked for London and manchester now for sport ....

as I say ,the city centre is decent now ....and if you go 10 miles out ether way ,are some lovely spots ....

the inner of all the cities in the area leave a lot to be desired .....brum ,Wolverhampton and Coventry .

its funny you should make the comparison between brum and Melbourne though ?....because that's what I thought when I first saw Melbourne after being in w.a for 6 years ....." Bloody hell its like being back in brum " ?

of course I isn't ,because of the likes of the m.c.g etc .....brum has nothing like that .

but the rough areas , are like our inner city areas here .

Melbourne didn't do it for me

Being a Brummie I agree with most you say here Brum does get overlooked far to often and has so much to offer.

However the rough areas in Melbourne have nothing on the rough areas of brum absolutely nothing! To be fair I found some of the outer suburbs rougher but not on par with inner city UK. Australia tends to spread it's issues out quite well.

Athletics surprising when so many have dropped out to join AFLW.  A lot more after the games finish too

Works both ways some of the best track and field athletes started out on the football (Soccer and NFL) fields.

I didn’t say they wouldn’t train, just that they wouldn’t peak and, like it or not, outdoor training is more limited in the UK between November to March.  Only a small handful of elite athletes can winter overseas.  Also the CG is not that major an event for everyone.  Track and field athletes for instance make their money at events across Europe between June to September.

Obviously outdoor training is limited but not a huge deal for track athletes unless there is snow on the ground it doesn't need to be sunny and dry to train, I used to be part of a small athletics team in a small town in the mildlands even as kids we were out twice a week all year round the seniors more so the top level guys will be out rain or shine. I disagree if an athlete is likely to be representing GB during the season highly likely they will be involved in overseas training camps there are loads from canaries to Thailand every winter. Of course the GC is a major event for all those taking part and a career high for some others.

There are gold medals for bowls too btw.  And I said competitors, not athletes.

    I know how silly.

7 minutes ago, Gbye grey sky said:

And no athletes look to peak before the start of an athletic season.  Like it or not it is a valid reason for some of the competitors from northern Europe.

I think you do them a disservice I think they would train to peak for major games which the Commonwealth games are they will then repeat the cycle for the European champs in August (not the bowls team though)

  12. 40 minutes ago, Gbye grey sky said:

Clearly you are joking.  Firstly,  most of these competitors are out and out amateurs with very limited funding.  Secondly, the Canaries would have limited facilities available only to elite athletes throughout Europe for off-season training.  Thirdly, these people have families and, in many cases, jobs.

Hard to imagine all the bowls players have wintered in the Canaries, for example, as preparation for the CG.

Now who's joking I wouldn't even class bowls player as athletes it's more of a pastime xD

You'd be surprised I'd say most of the track and field competitors would have attended over seas training camps along with the some of the cyclists during the winter, not an issue for the swimmers and a lot of the other sports are held indoors so not buying into the weather affecting the preparation of the home nations :nah:

As a case in point I watched the ladies shot putting in the heptthlon.  The difference in attitude and approach from the current leader, Katerina Johnson-Thompson, compared with the Aussie girls was very marked.  The English girl was making minimal effort whole the Aussies were giving it their all.

Clearly the lack of outdoor training and a desire not to encourage an injury are the only possible explanations.

If that is the case it's just poor preparation on the athletes part. No excuses.

England comfortably topped the medal table in 2014 despite Australia dominating the swimming as always.  There are some key issues at play for the home nations this time around.

Much much closer between the two teams in 2014 there is a huge gap in golds this time around, however that could change I guess.

The 2014 Games were at the end of the English summer (and end of Australian winter) so many sportsmen and women could fully prepare at the end of that season.  This time around few Brits will have had much opportunity to train outdoors in the previous 6 months let alone compete.

No not having that at this level the competitors would have spent the winter in the Canaries weather as bad as it is in the UK is not an excuse xD

Another major factor is that the London 2012 boost is wearing off with many of the stars of 2012 now retired.

Have to agree these things do go in cycles.

The 3rd important point is that the Games are simply much more important for the Australians as it is at home and a focal point for the year as 2014 was for the Scots in particular whereas some British athletes will view this as a pre-season warm-up.

Again I agree the same as 2012 was much more important to the home nations, pride at home goes a long way.

I guess we will need to wait until Tokyo to see how they both perform at that games.

Where did you live mate? That's not the aussie beach culture I see nearly every day. Our local beach has a patrolled area but it's not restricted. You can go in anywhere you like for a swim. I've been over to Queensland and Sydney and there are some beaches there, when it's big surf that are strict about being in the flagged areas. It makes sense though as a lot of people can't swim very well.

People are down the beach every day, even in winter and swim kms. Sure there are sharks but you stand more chance of being injured in a car accident driving to the beach.
