My in laws are over at the moment and have just spoken with hubbys sister back in our old home town, she said it is minus 4 and snowing !! The beast from the East (lol) as arrived.. I dont envy them at all and the in laws are hoping its gone and warmed up a bit before they go home. They did say there have been some nice days this year so far but its the lack of cinsisentcy that gets you down and i must admit that is what used to annoy me.

    Cal x

Mine are over too they have just been showing us there facebook feeds getting a lot of snow where they are from and the schools are closed, crappy weather for the start of spring feel sorry for those stuck there! Not good.

Much as I enjoyed Perth in Dec and Jan - going back in April and May - I did find it oppressive to walk around once the sun got up, although without the Sydney humidity. My favourite times were either early mornings or in the evenings. Still rather a Perth (or Sydney) summer than a Pommie winter.

Inlaws are over at the moment and loving the weather they have just come in from a long walk at this time of day he’s stripped off and jumped in the pool but MIL is just sat (in the sun) enjoying a cup of tea. They have another 3 weeks left but have already said they are dreading going back to the crappy weather.

    Perth summers are wonderful!

    Thanks @Sandgroper

it was this survey that got me...a few years ago now, mind, but still ?

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1257165/Britain-voted-worst-place-world-bring-children-Australia-best.html

its all very subjective at the end of the day I know, but I am having to make some very difficult decisions attached to the move and directing my thoughts about where is best is a bit like herding cats at the moment!

Yeah that survey is pretty shocking, tbh at the end of the day you have to take all the information you can gather and try to make an informed decision, that is what we did and are so glad we made the move. Australia is a great place for kids ours although outdoor types were restricted in the UK due to the weather so found themselves indoors to often just not the case here so much to do for them with the various sports and clubs.

That comes across as a wee bit harsh, I assume unintentionally.   I agree that some people make good travellers and some don't, but it's not always about "retreating back to a safe bubble".

Many people who don't settle either mention missing family and friends, or you can read between the lines and see that's their real issue  Those people probably think us independent travellers are downright heartless, being able to abandon our nearest and dearest without a second thought, and happily not see them for months or even years on end!

Wasn't meant to be harsh just an opinion, the missing and family and friends card gets pulled all to often I believe it's used as an excuse to return to the safe bubble.

  5. Some will never settle it's in their makeup, regardless of the location they will want to be back in their safe bubble. Some people just do not make good travelers other than the annual Benidorm trip then back to what they have known and where they have felt safe for the last however many years.

I could not imagine still living in the place I was born surrounded by the same people doing the same things week in week out I would have a real sense of failure if that was how my life and panned out.

Some people can adapt to new places others retreat back to what they know best.

It’s been a wonderful summer so far, hasn’t it? Barely a day above 34C and nothing on the horizon. It has been a bit more humid but nothing major and very liveable emoji1.png

Couldn't wish for a better climate, got the outlaws arriving next week from the UK they can't wait to get away from the damp and cold.

The only thing I disliked about Perth were the beaches which, in the arvo or evening at least, always seemed to blowing a gale, and I found it distinctly off-putting seeing signs up warning about snakes, and in one case, effluent, submerged rocks, currents and just about every other "nasty."

It does seem to have been much windier this summer maybe I'm imagining it, I used to welcome the afternoon breeze but some days it has been a real pain. Which beaches have you been too? Much nicer South of the river IMO.

ive had my car and hgv3 license since 86 and my full hgv and bus since98.. been driving trucks throughout europe also since 98

As calNgary said only car and bike licenses are transferable. You need to sit a test for hgv etc.

I realise there is a survey that suits practically everyone and they are mostly for bragging rights down the pub but 4th Best Country overall isn' bad really ;)

    https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/overall-full-list

Trying to work out who’s survey that is? Is it just the usnews websites survey that they have put together?

@AntipodistaI prefer more reliable sources like the OECD better life index, it measures everything from education, life expectancy, disposable income, crime and lots more If you click the link below it will display in alphabetical order click by rank and you will see how well Australia scores compared to the UK In most areas.

This may have been asked a billion times on here (in which case apologies!) but where, in people’s experience, is the better place to raise children - Aus or UK? Is Aus far better? All the stats seem to point that way and if the news is to believed UK education etc is going to the dogs - does anyone have any thoughts and experiences? I have two young ones (one about to start school) and am keen to get thoughts based on direct experience. TIA!

Education aside as I think good parenting tends to produce decent kids. You will get good and bad schools/teachers in both country. Although Australia does sit slightly higher than the UK in world education rankings. Don't think it's just the UK that has funding pulled the government in WA recently pulled the extra funding for the high achievers stream most schools run of which my daughter was just about to enter fortunately after public outcry the government listened and rescinded the cuts (wow politicians that listen I don't think the tories would have been so accommodating)

One of the major reasons we moved to Perth was because we believed it offered better surroundings to bring up our kids and everything we have experienced so far in the coming up to 4 years we have been here has reinforced that view. Kids really stay kids that bit longer here there isn't as much peer pressure to grow up, as an example my daughter has just turned 12 and started high school a few days ago her UK friends started high school last September the UK kids on leaving primary had a full blown prom girls in ball gowns getting their make up done in town before getting picked up in bloody limos and taken to the venue which was a function room at a nightclub apparently girls sat one side of the dance floor boys the other and all the talk on the Monday was about who got off with who absolutely ridiculous!! My daughters school hired the local yacht club function room it was beach themed so no pressure on kids to get expensive dresses a few girls had put on some make up but not many and although they had a 3 course sit down meal after that it was a fun night with a disco and games with parents not allowed in until the last 30 minutes.........the kids had fun!

We have just had the kids 6 week break and because of the great weather we manged to get away for almost 3 weeks of it you just can't do that with the crappy UK weather. It's all about memories for the kids for me, I remember looking out at the rain from a tent in Barmouth during our annual holiday!!

It's perfectly fine to have that opinion of course, I also lived both in Australia and England growing up and my opinion is different as is the opinions of my 2 children. It's why it's obviously impossible to definitively say one country is better as it's an individual thing. One of my son's says everything in Australia wants to kill you lol

You really cannot let someone have an unbiased opinion can you? I’ve seen @Bulya post some strong views on what he/she does not like about Australia which you hurriedly and appreciatively like but as soon as it’s something even slightly in favour of Oz you can’t handle it and have to counter it ??????

I have been enjoying it so much I forgot to log into Poms in Oz and discuss my experiences.

I started off here in 1978 and I went east partly because i coiuld not get a job and partly because i was worried i might go home without seeing the SOH & SHB & Bondi Beach.

This is first time here in 21 years. What do I not like about it? The beaches which all seem to be blowing gales and all have signs to beware of snakes/effluent/submerged rocks/rips and pubs which close even earlier than Pommie pubs. The only place i can find to watch English football after midnight is the casino.

What do I like about it? What passes for a traffic jam in Perth would not even rate a traffic report on Sydney radio. I go out on the north south freeway regularly from my base on Mill Point Road in South Perth and it never seens to have a jam. i stood on the wharf at Mends St at 815 am on a weekday watching the non existent crowds getting on the 815 ferry to Elizabeth Quays (i think?)

i can go for a joy ride in Perth. In Sydney you endure the roads to get from A to B.

What did PB and others hate about Perth? Too isolated from the Eastern States? Who cares?  What do you need to go there for? And Europe is closer - soon a non stop

i go in Windsor pub and have turned it into my local. Exactly as i did in Sydney ditto the cafes.

    So? What am I missing?!

You are not missing anything, if you are the sort that needs the attractions (and issues/crime) of big cities like London or Melbourne (couldn't think of anything worse personally) then Perth definitely isn't for you though. Plenty to do and see if you look with more than enough travel options both domestically and internationally.

If you love the beach/hills/bush lifestyle, the outdoors and IMO one of the best climates anywhere in the world Perth is perfect. It's got a lot going for it if you can be bothered to look great place to bring up kids which is what I'm doing.

And you are absolutely right about the traffic..............a breeze even compared to some small towns let a lone big UK cities.

  13. Success is a nice suburb, not sure why the rating would be low. The four suburbs directly South of Cockburn Central are all decent Success, Atwell, Aubin Grove and Hammond park.

With the new train station at Aubin Grove either Hammond Park or Aubin Grove would be my choice over Atwell and Success, they are all served by a good bus service into Cockburn Central.

The drive to Henderson from any of those would be really easy 15-20 minutes tops at peak times.
