  1. What were your thoughts on Fitzroy/Collingwood when you had a chance to look round. If it wasn't for work considerations where do you think you would have chosen?
  2. I've heard that good saucepans are worth taking. Again v expensive.
  3. I suppose the good thing about paying with a credit card is it gave me another pay packet before I have to pay the card bill :-)
  4. Hi bobatha, our documents arrived at Perth immi on 05-03-2015 and this was confirmed as our lodgement date on an email received by me on 10-03-2015. The email included an invoice which was really confirmation that they had charged my credit card for the initial fee. The charge was made on my card on 10-03-2015 but on checking with my bank it didn't show on their records til the next day. I too had expected it to take 6 to 8 weeks but it was taken within a week. It's worth ringing your bank in advance to put a note on their records that this payment is going to be requested so they don't refuse it as an unusual payment. You mentioned making sure you have enough in your account. My understanding is that they don't accept debit cards so I used a credit card. Ours was for a 103 application. Don't know if that would make any difference to the speed of collecting the fee. Hope that helps.
  5. Haha don't think of ourselves as oldies. Like watching live music in bars and going out to eat and a few drinks. Maybe having a second adolescence. Don't want anything too quiet. South Yarra has been suggested by my son and Richmond. I suspect there are loads of lovely suburbs to choose from.
  6. Hi Fisher1, i guess quite a few people drop out for various reasons including moving over to the CPV. At least that's what I'm counting on :-)
  7. We have just done ours and used a local solicitor at a charge of £2 per item. I get the impression any solicitor will do it.
  8. Thanks Val, that gives me some hope. If it came in less than about 12 years I would have to retire early :-)
  9. Woke up to an email from Perth confirming the lodgement date of our 103 application and a receipt for the first VAC. I was so worrying that the credit card people would decline the payment even tho I had asked them to put a note on their system. I know the immi site says its a 30 year wait but we are planning for retirement really so about 15 years would suit us fine. I'm not going to get depressed at this stage that it could be years longer. I guess when we are in the queue in about 18 months or so we can track how quickly we are going up the queue and if it really is looking like taking 30 years we will need to bite the bullet and somehow find the cash for the contributory option. In the meantime I am going to allow myself a few days of going round with a smile on my face.
  10. Just wondered what progress you have made regarding areas to live in. We love Fitzroy/Collingwood and have identified Prahran/Windsor to look at when we do our next visit. Also heard good things about St Kilda.
  11. Hi all, the courier picked up our visa application today and their site gives an estimated arrival time as this Thursday. I feel so excited but won't feel happy til I know it is safely there and the payment has been taken. I am going to call my credit card provider to get them to note that a charge is going to be made from Australia so they don't refuse it. In others experience how long was it from receipt in Perth to the charge being taken? Thanks in advance for your responses.
  12. Yeah Julie I know what you mean. Our son is in Brunswick East currently and used to be in Fitzroy. We are definately City folk. We don't mind being not too near him as I'm sure he won't want to see us too often after being here for six years without us! We are considering other areas not too far from the city such as Prahran and Windsor. We like it quite busy with plenty of cafes, bars, restaurants and independant shops. Also got to have good transport links as don't plan to have a car if we can manage without. However I have heard really good things about the Mornington area and Mt Martha in particular. It's not an area I am familiar with and I keep worrying I am missing something by sticking to the inner suburbs but ultimately think it is right for us. If anyone can make suggestions based on our criteria that would be really helpful as we are planning our next visit to really narrow down what areas we are looking in.
  13. Thanks Val, it's scary wanting to make sure the paperwork gets there let alone a hugh bank cheque. Hi Julie, Melbourne is ultimately our destination. Looking at Fitzroy area or Collingwood side near to Fitzroy where we have stayed on previous trips( we are early 50's so don't have to worry about schools etc lol). Also considering Prahran and Windsor area. Planning our next visit feb next year so planning to look at other areas to make sure we know where we want to be. What about you?
  14. We are considering what areas to concentrate on for accomodation. We are a mid 50's couple so don't need to be concerned with schools etc. we are interested in somewhere with lots of cafes, restaurants, bars, independent shops and good transport links as we are hoping to manage without a car. We don't plan to be working so not limited by job location. We love Fitzroy and the adjoining part of Collingwood and have stayed there a few times. On our next trip over we want to explore some other areas incase we can't buy what we want in these areas. I have thought of Prahran and Windsor but would be interested in any other areas that forum members might think would be worth a look for us. Thanks in advance.
  15. Hi, about to send the precious application via Parcelflight. I am presuming anything other than the Post Office counts as a courier so will send it to the Wellington Road address. Is this right? Also I was going to use a signed for service. Just wanted to check that they do 'signed for' at the destination as I dont want the application returned because there is no one available to sign for the package. What were other people's experience of this please? Don't want to get it wrong at this point.
  16. Hi Val, my son has completed the Form 40 and is forwarding it onto me to put everything together and get it to Perth. I'm a control freak so wanted to know that everything was in the parcel and that it was my responsibility to make sure nothing was forgotten! We are not using an agent but I was just a bit confused as to what counted as a courier but am assuming that any private company probably is, thanks, Ruth
  17. Thanks Val, presumably Parcelflight counts as a courier service so the application needs to go to the Wellington Street address and not the Locked bag?
  18. Hi, i am about to send our visa application to Australia. Please can anyone advise me on the best way to send it to get there quickly and safely? Is a courier service best and if so who have people used? Thanks x
  19. Hoping for some advice as unsure if I am missing something. we have decided to get on and put in a 103 visa application. We are willing to take a chance on the waiting time as we want to settle in Australia on retirement which will be about 12 years time but could travel back and forth on tourist visas for a few years if needed until we are too old to travel so hopefully could get the 103 in our timescale. i have completed the application form and am in the process of getting the certified documents together. I will forward it to my son in Melbourne to complete the form 40 and add his certified documents. He will then mail the lot to the relevant address. My queries are that I am a bit concerned that almost everyone seems to be using Migration Agents. Is this necessary if your situation seems straight forward and you are confident completing forms? Also so I am a little unsure of the process (I know a Migration Agent would clarify this but it feels like you guys can help with that!). Once the application and documents have been sent do you get any acknowledgment? Do you then wait to be allocated a Case Officer and do they write to advise of the next steps? It seems that you don't join the queue for a year or two. Why is this? If further evidence is needed is it simply asked for or does your application fail and you lose your first application fee? (I hope not!). Are medicals and police checks done then or do they get requested towards the end of the process many years ahead? I understand the AoS interview assessment gets done last just before the visa is granted. lots of questions already!
  20. hi, when you say 'when the visa is about to be granted'. Does this mean that it is when you get near the front of the queue in many years time or are you assessed and granted the visa (but not given it til you get to the top of the queue) in a year or two? If it is the former does our son still have to complete and send in his form at the time we make our application as the information will change over time? Hope that makes sense.
  21. We are considering applying for the 103 visa as we don't plan to retire and move to Australia for 10 to 12 years. Our son would be providing the AoS but currently is studying and only works part time so probably wouldn't meet the income requirement at this time. The bank bond isn't an issue as we would pay that into our son's account. My question is at what stage in the process would his income be assessed?
