  1. Anyone ever scraped their car on the way to the airport? We're flying out in January 2016 on a one way ticket. Our car is due it's MOT a couple of weeks after that, it's done 125K miles, and is like 16 years old, wouldn't get much money for it basically! It's a good runner though! The plan is to drive to London Heathrow for the flight, and call by the scrap yard on the way to get rid. Does that sound insane? LOL. I figured that if we sold before, we'd only have to pay for train tickets to Heathrow anyway which would probably cost more than the car! :biglaugh:

    Flights

I wouldn't fly with MA, personally - would rather pay extra. I believe Qantas are the best in the world (no fatalities) - and I read something about their planes have engine management reporting back to base, constantly via satellite, allowing them to keep an eye on problems. I watched a documentary last night on MH370 and why planes disappear. It said that MH370 contained a cargo of a load of batteries. Some airlines won't do this due to safety concerns. It seems that not all airlines are the same to me. Some are cheaper but make their money by transporting risky things! All my opinion of course
  3. I'd get it in writing (not verbal) that they don't want you in tomorrow. If they won't write it, go in anyway.
  4. ^ What Bungo said... ^ Also, I would double/triple/quadruple(!) check that everything you have entered into the EOI is 100% correct. You don't want to be in a situation where you receive an invite in a couple of weeks time, then realise you've made a mistake, then have to wait 60 days for the EOI to expire so that you can wait for a 2nd invite.
  5. Hi all, I'm looking at Brisbane suburbs and not sure where to pick! I wondered if anyone could give recommendations. Initially we want to rent for 6 months, while looking for somewhere to buy. I'll be working in the CBD, so it needs to be within 30 minute/30km drive of the CBD (would consider a little longer for something really special). We prefer something newer and modern looking, and don't like the old style houses. Looking at Forest Lakes or Springfield Lakes areas - what are these like? (doesn't necessarily have to be near these suburbs) We have a budget of around $500/wk to rent, but would like somewhere to buy ($600K max) after 6 months. We have 2 kids (8 y/o, and 2 y/o). Would prefer somewhere near to good schools! Overall, we'd like somewhere that is SAFE/low crime And moon on a stick for a bonus
  6. No, no need to declare - they ask the questions for fun. It's all optional.
  7. Get all of your job references. You're going to need them anyway.

    advive

There are other occupations that may be a better match. Search on the SOL page "telecomm", for example.

Is your occupation on the SOL? https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Work/Work/Skills-assessment-and-assessing-authorities/skilled-occupations-lists/SOL Telecommunications Field Engineer? (code 313212) Possibly?
  10. What Bungo said... they are wrong. Remind your HR department that you have a 189 subclass visa with unrestricted working rights, anywhere in Australia. You can work in whatever occupation you wish.
  11. It's the cases that take up the majority of the space. How about getting a CD wallet, and putting the discs in there? http://www.tesco.com/direct/tesco-black-wallet-for-208-cds-dvds/208-8573.prd The paper inserts can come out of the case and stashed in e.g. a box file. I personally wouldn't rip them all - just because of the time involved in doing it.
  12. I think you'd need to die to cash them in. FWIW, I recently asked about our life insurance policy (with Legal & General). They say it's OK for us to carry on paying our monthly fee, and it will pay out should anything happen, even if we are living permanently in Australia. It's worth checking with your life insurance co. though - they might not all be the same.
  13. LOL. Each to their own. I know for sure I wouldn't be carrying around $40K in hard cash (unless I was a multi-millionaire and that type of money didn't matter much to me!!)
  14. And if you lose it/gets stolen/plane is evacuated, what are you going to do?
  15. British citizen - that means you don't have to take IELTS if you don't want to (you probably already know that anyway). Re: the proof of money: 1) Goto: http://migration.qld.gov.au/ 2) Click the Skilled Visas tab 3) Click Skilled – Nominated (subclass 190) visa 4) Goto the Criteria tab half way down the page. 5) Read all the criteria
  16. With 60 points, you won't be waiting long (2 weeks or so). - EDIT: assumed 190 visa process same as 189 visa - but it's slightly different Is your husband a British citizen? If you get IELTS and get level 7+ across reading/writing/speaking/listening, then that give you 10 points, so you could get a 189 visa (which means you could live in another state immediately if you change you mind - it also means you don't have to comply with any potential proof of how much money you have/other things - depends on state though.
  17. As others have said, you have your own visa. You're free to get any job you wish. And it will not affect any future citizenship application.
  18. Here's a good place to start: http://www.border.gov.au/ See section: Individuals and Travellers > Visas As Bungo said, a bit more info would be nice (at least your age and occupation, and how many years you've been in your occupation)
  19. Regarding the English test: you'll probably need to take the test anyway and get at least 6+ points across reading/writing/speaking/listening (which gives you 0 points).
  20. So you turn 40 y/o in 10.5 months time. I think you have enough time to keep those 25 points for your age, if you get the ball rolling NOW (I cannot stress this enough!). Start getting referrences from previous employers NOW! Check out the 190 visa page: http://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Visa-1/190- Have a look at Queensland's page on here: http://skillselect.govspace.gov.au/2013/04/26/i-am-seeking-state-or-territory-government-nomination/ Check Queensland's SOL. It appears that 2613xx codes aren't on there (which is why i said try VIC or NSW earlier). Last time I checked they were both sponsoring for a 190 visa. It's worth mentioning that you have to live+work in that state which sponsors you for 2 years, but it's only a moral obligation (search for more info). Regarding your 8+ years experience. I believe the first 2 years of relevant employment AFTER you got your degree (in Aug 2005) will not count towards the points calculation, so assuming you were employed for 2 years solid after Aug 2005, your skills employment actually commenced in Aug 2007, meaning you've only just managed to get 8 years experience from August 2015 (this assumes there are NO gaps in your employment).
  21. Is this how your points look? - 33-39 years of age (25 points) - 8+ years experience outside Australia skilled employment (15 points) - Bachelor degree (15 points) - Proficient English (10 points) = 65 points ??? Without the Proficient English, you have 55 points, which means you could go for a 190 subclass visa (you would need a state to nominate you - best bets are VIC or NSW). Questions: a) When is your 40th birthday? b) What date did you acquire your bachelors degree?
  22. That's correct. If you've never worked in Australia, then it's 15 points maximum for skilled employment. You do have 8+ years skilled employment during the past 10 years, don't you? Is your degree/higher education related to your chosen skilled occupation? When did you pass it?
  23. You could get 20 points for employment if you worked in Australia (on-shore) for 8+ years out of the previous 10 years *OR* a combination of on-shore and off-shore employment (e.g. 5+ years employment OUTSIDE Australia (10 points) + 3+ year employment INSIDE Australia (10 points). So 10 points + 10 points = 20 points.
  24. By the way... you age for the points test is what your age is on the day that you are invited to apply for a visa It is not when you actually apply for the visa.
  25. You're 39 at the moment, and 41 next year? No 40 inbetween? Do you mind me asking when your birthday is? (Month and year will do!) My skill is software developer. I did my IELTS first, then it took 3 months for ACS to assess my skills. Then I had to wait around 1 month for invite from my EOI, then it was another 3 or 4 months to get the visa grant. You need a skills assessment and language test BEFORE you fill in your EOI. Skilled employment: you don't get 15 points for one skill, and then 5 points for another. You can only go through this process by showing you are skilled at ONE particular occupation.
