Hello David,
I am in the same boat that you are - 29, single, 4-year experienced teacher going through arduous visa process without a migration agent. I'll give you my process thus far in hopes that it helps you out, as I have been on a scavenger hunt since August to get all of this information and it would have been way easier getting all the info from one location
I sent off my docs to AITSL on 9 October and received approval 28 December. I requested a work statement to include with my visa for the DIAC, but that was delayed. For the DIAC statement, you must send ORIGINAL statements of employment to the AITSL. I assumed that my certified docs were satisfactory - apparently they are only satisfactory to get APPROVAL to teach. I sent my originals 28 December and I am waiting on the statement with no word yet from AITSL if they have received my originals :-/
I have the IELTS scheduled for 12 January in order to get the extra points for the 189. Even though the AITSL doesn't require teachers to take the test, I've heard on here that higher points help with a quicker invitation for application. With high IELTS results, I will have 70 points.
I front-loaded my medicals (1 Oct 2012) and police documents (3 Jan 2013) and have all pertinent documents scanned and ready for the visa application (transcripts, diplomas, credential, employment statements, recent pay slip, passport, Form 80). I'm only waiting on my police results (should receive in next week), DIAC statement (hopefully getting in a few weeks, although even with a statement from the AITSL the DIAC still requires statements to make up their own minds about work experience), and IELTS results (in 3 weeks). Once I get the IELTS results in I will submit an EOI. I'm estimating that I will receive an invite within a week and with my documents already completed, I hope that the application process will be quick and that I will have visa completed by March 2013.
Once I get the visa, I will be registering for the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia. The TRB requires another round of certified documents, as does the State. If you have already worked in WA you are in luck as I assume you already have an employee ID number. Once my TRB approval goes through, I must apply to the fixed term teaching pool in order to receive my employee number and THEN I can start applying for jobs. I prefer state jobs although if an independent school is willing to hire me right away then I will teach private.
Whew - that is a lot to chew on! Let me know if you have any other questions about the process I have been through so far. What are your plans for teaching in Oz? I am hoping to get a temporary teaching position for Term 3 & 4 or I will relief teach around Perth through December. My ultimate goal is to enter the Remote Teaching Service beginning Term 1 2014 for a 3-5 year time period.
Since you have performed relief teaching in the past - how often did you get work? Daily or a couple days a week? And what was the going rate for a relief teacher per day? Thanks and good luck!!
Angie
