  1. If I'd seen that in the UK I'd have dialled 999 because I believe I understand the system, I wanted clarification hence checking on google and it seems I'll potnentially open a can of worms and the authorities here don't prosecute for this type of assault.
  2. It's more a case of will anything come of it. If I thought it would I wouldn't hesitate.
  3. I think they genuinely don't believe they've done anything wrong. Otherwise why would you do that in front of guests ? My concern i'll be honest given that we will be at school with these kids next term, my older daughter is in their older daughters class is if I do report it then it could only have come from me, I wasn't very good at hiding how shocked I was and if nobody in authority thinks there's anything wrong in what they've done then there will be a backlash towards my family. If I thought somebody would stop it happening again I wouldn't hesitate.
  4. It wasn't once. In the UK if you made a mark with your hand you'd be prosecuted. If you used anything at all to hit the child with you'd be prosecuted even without marking. It's pretty primitive here wouldn't you say ? The naughty step is a crock of **** too, but some times every one just needs a moment to calm down and that's a good thing.
  5. Because dad walked into kitchen picked up wooden spoon, went into other room, sounds of flesh being hit, child hysterical and then child appears with welts on his leg. It was pretty conclusive.
  6. The truth is I might expect that behavior from somebody not educated who doesn't know any better, does that make sense ? The fact that these two have professional jobs I'd wrongly assumed they might be a bit more clued up.
  7. I googled who to report it to, social services or police and discovered neither would be that bothered, test case in Melbourne highlighted that.
  8. You think I stood in the same room watching a two year old get hit with a wooden spoon ? Really ? I was in the house not in the same room.
  9. From the research i've done online it doesn't seem it'll be taken seriously if I do report it. What exactly could somebody who's only actually been alive for 24 months have done that's so awful that there is ANY justification whatsoever ? I couldn't say how many times he was hit I wasn't stood there watching otherwise I'd have intervened I think.
  10. Mosman is lovely, have you won the lottery ? Check out realestate.com.au
  11. The full story, was the kid was naughty, he was but he is 2. With regards to smacking, i've seen people get cross, heat of the moment smack across the legs, kid howls, parent looks sheepish everyone gets over it. To calmly walk to the kitchen to pick up a wooden spoon and hit until it leaves welts and then go back and carry on as if nothing happened whilst your 2 year old screams the place down I thought was psychotic tbh.
  12. Samcking i'd be shocked that educated people still do that, but that it's legally ok with an implement ??? Gob smacked
  13. Will you need the wife to work when you get here ? If so sort childcare places, names on waiting lists now, in fact do that anyway if you want the 1 year old to have any sort of nursery education/experience. And try and get PR asap, it makes a world of difference.
  14. It left welts on his legs, I was actually all for calling the police until we googled and discovered a mother had been interviewed by the police for using a wooden spoon on her child and the matter was not in the public interests and so the matter not pursued.
  15. No I haven't. It was so blatant I'm sure kids get walloped back in the UK but I think most would not do it front of other people and not be so "normal" afterwards, I was shaking like a leaf, the hitter was making tea and waving smiling and saying goodbye.
  16. I too believe that when a shark attacks me in a car park or at the cinema then it should be punished. You look like a seal you risk becoming a meal I believe is the saying.
  17. Have some things shocked or surprised you about Australian way of life ? We live in a nice area, mix with 99% Australian professionals with a similar out look or so I bloody thought. Went for a playdate at somebody house and witnessed their 2 year old get hit with a wooden spoon for drawing on something, very openly, welts on the child's leg. After I'd picked my jaw up off the floor, made my excuses, went home and googled the Australian stance on this and find it's perfectly acceptable. Obviously we'll be finding new friends but bloody hell. What's shocked/surprised you ?
  18. We've rented ours out, I cannot imagine being comfortable with the levels of debt many seem to take on to buy a house in Perth. 3 times our joint income would be the absolute tops for me and given that would buy you a 3 bed house in the middle of crimesville with a 60 min commute, no thank you.
  19. Childcare is a nightmare, get the children's names on waiting lists now, we have been on one for 6 months and still haven't been offered a place so I am paying $1000 a week for a nanny, which sounds a lot but is actually only $22 ph which is not really a living wage in Perth for anyone. Nursery places, full time are $100 per day per child and they don't start full time until they are 5 yrs old.
  20. Oh and kids trainers in the next 5 sizes up to last you for a few years.
  21. Check out who does free delivery, marks and Spencer's for example will ship out bedding for free as will the white company so don't waste valuable space packing that. I'd buy new mattresses for your beds and keep them in the wrapper as its impossible to find uk sizes here.
  22. Iron ore has been at $120 for a few weeks now and things are going into the next stage on gorgon and Wheatstone. Lots of man power required just make hay whilst the sun shines and save for the next dip and you'll be fine. The mistake people make is thinking $120 for a pit washer is normal
