Hi all, We are arriving in perth at the end of January. I am and have been a plumber in the uk all my working life ( 24 years ) . I've got a 176 pr visa and went through vetasses and have got my level 3 overseas provincial plumbers licence. my main worry/ concern about our move is work. in the uk I've been very lucky running my own plumbing business with work finding me ( don't advertise) . i read / hear all these horror stories about uk plumbers not being able to find a plumbing job in Australia . if I couldn't work as a plumber has anyone any suggestions of a different line of work I could do to support a family of 5. i looked into being a postie but on $ 19-22 / hr I wouldn't be able to provide for everyone. my wife who is a level 5 child minder will work once she has her licence . Any suggestions would be appreciated as the worry is taking the shine off our move many thanks ian

moving to Perth January 2013 - mixed emotions
Georgiajoe replied to stacyamy's topic in Western Australia
Hi, we have booked our flights from London to perth with Singapore on 25 th jan i am in the same position , some days feeling very positive others thinking what the hell am I doing. i have my own plumbing / heating business in devon for the last 11 years, I am soooooo busy at the moment and already have had to turn down 12 houses and a massive re furb early next year due to moving. the thing that scares me is that where I live everyone knows me as the local plumber and I never have to advertise for work , so I'm going from having loads of wrk/ turning work away to arriving in Perth with no job, no house , no school for our kids. we have booked a 4 week rental in south yunderup ( a long way down) . Looking at prices on web of rentals , it looks like the only area we could afford is around port Kennedy / Warnbro. with not having a job it's going to be hard to budget on a rental cost ( not knowing salary ) . Good luck everyone moving across ian -
thank you great advise ian

Hi all, just a quick question if anyone can help me. were moving across in January and have been looking at suburbs/ rentals on reiwa. looking NOR in places like woodvale, hocking, tapping etc there are roughly 3 rentals per suburb and around $ 450+ / week. looking SOR around areas such as port Kennedy , Warnbro there are around 20 properties at price of $ 350 + / week. what is the reason for the cheper rentls and the more available SOR as I'm a plumber and coming over with no job , the rental cost is important as I'm not sure of what my salary could be. Thank you for help ian

Hi all, we re moving to perth in jan. I am a plumber and want / need/ hope to find work ASAP. thing is if I ship my tools ( power tools ) main tool box ill take over on plane , they won't be in perth when I need to start work. Does anyone know if companies supply power tools or Lend you some until you get yourself sorted out . or is it a case of having to wait or gear before you can start work thank you Ian

Hi dan, I would say that it will be vey hard. im a plumber for 24 years had to go through vetasses to get my level 3 aust provisional licence . This means I can only work for a licenced plumber in perth. when I'm in perth I've to to apply or my plumbers licence and attend a 2 week GAP training course. most jobs on seek etc state that they are looking for a minimum of 5 years WA experience . I'm giving up 11 years of having my own company for this so I hope it's worth it. goto my profile there are quite lot of plumbing questions and answers on there good Luck ( we all need it) cheers ian
