  1. I have heard excellent reports on woodvale high and also duncraig wich are northern, kent street high is meant to be good also think thats southern perth. You always have the option of private schools as well x
  2. Its only worth it if its what you want. To be honest, if hes a mechanic, they r highly sought after. Theres nothing to stop you getting a place close to the beach up northern perth i.e. clarkson, banksia grove areas. They r cheap as away from the city but you wont need to be near the city as you could work from home. i would check out local garages in coastal areas. I guess you need to think about why you applied in the first place? If your happy enough here what made you apply? If it was just as an option you may be better to stay but if it was for a whole new start then go for it x
  3. Hi Wendy, prob heading NOR (north of river) and i will decide on job once i arrive. OH is a bricklayer. Ive always hated the uk since i was born, never felt like i fitted in here, my sense of humour and outlook on life is much more aussie than english. I feel like England isn't england anymore and community spirit is a thing of the past, its all about people looking after themselves x
  4. We are moving in the next 2 weeks to Perth. My oh bro is there and moved 5 years ago. He said if someone had given him a ticket back to uk in first 2/3 years he would have but now after 5 years, hes happy and settled. Coming back here he said hes glad he waited so long as he feels happy its just a visit. If your unsure most people on here say come to uk for a month before you decide. Quite a few people have found that when they come back, they are superstars for a week and then it all goes back to normal and they end up regretting it.
  5. Everyone is different, we are moving because we cant balance the books here and im 30 earning min wage even tho i have good qualifications. Our kids wont ever earn good money and our son cant even afford a car! Even if we bought him one he couldnt afford fuel and insurance. On the other hand, you may be in a good position and happy here. I think you get 5 years after you activate to actually make the move, if so, have the summer here to think maybe?
  6. I've only been to Perth and will be moving there in about 2 weeks. From speaking with both brits and aussies i got the vibe as follows: Sydney - city, expensive, young persons playground Melb, again, good for a weekend visit, but mainly for the younger crowd, Adelaide - lovely for family/couples, cheaper housing, our friends love it there, has a kinda country feel Perth - city life without the expense and madness, more laid back, good for singles, couples or families I have seen loads of threads on here where people have moved to one place and wanted to come back to uk but after moving to another aussie state found they loved it! Give Perth a go I say. Good luck.

    getting started

I don't think you are eligible if you are a care worker/support worker. Usually you need to be a qualified nurse/mental health worker or at least have a relevant degree. You will prob find you need to get qualified as a nurse or move over there and qualify on a study visa.
  8. I would ring the place you had them done and say you dont need them sending yet. They cant send them without your case no/Id etc anyway. Just dont open the envelope as they will be void if you do! Usually you apply for visa, when you get a case officer they email/contact you to say apply for your police/meds etc. The prob you have is they are only valid for 12 months so if your visa is granted say in 6 months time, you only have 6 mths to make the move.

    Hi guys..

Think you will have to live 50/50 then. Its nice you can afford it as many cant. Only other option is to pray one of your other children make the move. Either way, hope you enjoy x
  10. I cant wait to drive round looking for rent. My only "bug bear" is that apparently the agents don't like to show you round on your own, they do open house on most and im not sure I can bothered to fight 10 other people. Id rather just put down the money and sign on the dotted line! Guess I will have to work my charm. Ocean Reef schools look amazing! Also, Duncraig High School and Woodvale High are meant to be very good. The only area that keeps cropping up on here seems to be Heathridge but I don't know why its got a bad rep. Heres to flying out in 3 weeks!
  11. Gumtree.com.au seems to have a lot of good second hand stuff which is what we plan to do. I think if you buy everything new its expensive but having 3 boys, a second sofa is fine. My biggest worry is a decent car. I have been told that cars that are 10 years old in oz are newer (effectively) than our ones here as they don't wear so much? We fly in 3 weeks so I guess we will find out. Uniforms look stupid prices! Ive always stocked up at asda but not sure if you can do that over there? Good luck peeps.
  12. I stayed for 3 weeks in Bentley it seemed nice. You have the shopping centre etc which is always handy. It depends on how much you want to spend on rent, Bentley and St James are reasonable as are Queens Park. East Victoria Park seemed a bit "posher" just don't go near Kelmscott its a little "under Par" so to say. That is just my opinion so no offence meant to anybody who lives there.
  13. Hi Renandvik, keep in touch we could meet for a beer at Hillarys boat harbour, thats right near ocean reef. Quinn Rocks is a bit further up x
  14. Hi people, we should be flying out end April, heading to northern Perth to be closer to jobs. We are a family of 5, OH bricklayer, kids 7, 13, 17 if anybody wants to meet x
  15. HI Ben & family, Connolly is about 15 up from Woodvale, nice area, esp for golfers! My brother in law lives there. x
  16. Hi Shazza, I got offered one of the new 4x2's in Pearsall but when I looked on googlemaps, it just worries me about that main road you need to go along to get to where our friends are in Woodvale. Hoping kids can go to Woodvale schools as well and I think Pearsall comes under Wanneroo? We also need to be near to the train to travel for work. Good to know the areas nice tho. x
  17. We are coming out end April and looking between Duncraig-Woodvale area, just down from Joondalup. Our sons are 7, 13 and 17 so we need to tick a lot of boxes! Long as you head by a train station you should be fine. Not sure how many jobs there are in Joondalup compared to Perth city but I would imagine a lot less depending on your skill. Good luck.
  18. Exchange date permitting we are finally flying out in the next 4 weeks! We are heading to Woodvale area is anybody else also heading that way? One journey coming to an end with a bigger and better journey about to start! I have heard that DIAC have now closed ALL visa applications until after July. Im so glad we applied when we did!
  19. Hi Rebecca, We are also a family of 5, hubby a bricklayer. Firstly, its only as daunting as you let it become. We took 2 years to get our visa and are flying out in next 4 weeks. I have to say the worst part so far has been selling the house! Tradies (tradesmen) get most jobs by word of mouth and networking. There is a newspaper in Perth called the Western Gazette which has local jobs in the paper but trade jobs don't really get advertised online, thats more office type jobs. Carpenters will have no probs getting work, all I will say is that he may have to take a job as a labourer for first month while they check out his skills. Rents, if you land in height of their summer theres an all out fight but landing in May like we are is a lot less hassel. Our mortgage company did us a letter to say we have never missed a payment. They will ask for the mortgage letter plus 2 refs. We have friends and family in perth for our refs. Its not as bad as you think but a good tip is to offer 3 months rent upfront instead of 2, its a sure thing! With regards to areas, depends whether or not you want north or south of the river. If you go right down south to Rockingham, Madurah areas the rents cheap and the houses are bigger but theres not much work. If you go within 20 km of perth (either north or south) then you should be fine. They usually call it NOR or SOR for short. SOR, East Victoria Park, Belmont, Canning Vale are all ok. Only place thats not that great is Kelmscot. NOR, between Duncraig-Woodvale are all good. Just find an area by the train stations. Far NOR is places like Wanneroo, Banksia Grove are all nice but again, quite a trek. Good luck.
  20. Getting your 3 months seasonal work done first is great. My cousins currently in hobart (Taz) doing farm work and loves it. She gets $600 a week plus they pay all your board and food etc. Shes doing longer days as its based on hours so she will actually only do about 8 weeks. With regards to jobs, you just need to make contact with people before you go and sound them out. You should be ok if its a 6 month contract but I know that some people struggle finding jobs as WHV means you wont be staying perm if that makes sense. Sydneys a busy ol place so you should be fine. Good luck.
  21. Have you looked at WA? Might not be where you want to remain but if you get over there you can always move when possible. Its the biggest state so needs more people. Dont give up, we have had the roller coaster of our lives and nearly given up so many times but it is worth it. x
  22. Hi peeps, Anybody live in Pearsall? We have the possibility of renting there but im worried about how far away it is. Looks like you need to get down the main freeway/road to get to Woodvale school which looks like the nearest. Any ideas/advice on areas around there much appreciated as landing in about 5 weeks. Cheers.
  23. If you go in DIAC website and type in medicals in their search it gives you a list of approved centres. They all differ, we had to wait 8 weeks for an appt but some only wait say 2 weeks. Usually its best to ring your nearest one and book asap. Make sure your case officer asks for them as they are only valid for 12 months.
  24. We got 176 visa state sponsored. I would get your skills assessed as you cant apply without. You basically need everything ready i.e. skills assessment, ILETS etc ready for application as they will ask you to upload it. Depending on your skill, (hubby was trade) he had to pay $600 to VETASSESS for them to assess his paper part then he had to pay about $2500 for the practical. If you are going state sponsored you will need your state sponsorship letter as well. I would go: ILETS Skills Assessment (some trades they only test twice yearly) Then apply for sponsorship, they will need the above. Once sponsorship through you can apply for visa. Everything is changing this July again so you better hurry. From July you must "be invited to apply" you cannot just log on and apply like now. Good luck.
  25. It depends on your skill. You should take one of the online points test to see if you qualify. Usually you need to prove the last 8 out of 10 years in your skilled profession and then look at getting your skills assessed. We went state sponsored and it cost around £6,000 altogether. Its not cheap and i think the visa fees went up last July and will go up again this July.
