1. Lived there for 18 years, and me and hubby went for a visit before we left for Australia - happy days! The bizzies, the 'ozzy, the offie - quality. I wonder if there's a pub in Liverpool called The Paddington that locals call the Paddo, just like in Brisso?!
 2. You can't help disliking things, but when it comes to conversation why focus on the negatives?! There are a couple of things that have bugged me since arriving (why are the yoghurt pots so big? I can't finish them! lolol) but when meeting new people I'm not going to harp on about that stuff. I know I've said this before, but these shortening of words do remind me of my time in Liverpool. Hubby's boss said something about the 'servos'. Took me a while to realise it means motorway services!
 3. I'm sorry it amuses me that emergency services are referred to as 'Ambos' and 'Firies'. I find it kind of cute. Johndoe, the few Brits we've met since arriving haven't had that superiority thing going on at all. Maybe it's the lowbrow company we keep
 4. :laugh:I was singing that to hubby earlier to wind him up
 5. No! Noooooo ( please don't feel mocked, you are having an awful time and it's far more deep seated than manky snags or no M&S  I have bad days, feeling like I'm in no man's land, but really don't want to go back to Scotland because of it either - I just want to get a nice job and feel a bit more settled. I'm sure if we'd moved within the UK, me having quit a job without another lined up, I'd struggle just as much.
 6. Colin, you lived on Bribie, lucky you! Only been once but I fell in love with Red Beach and wish it were closer, but we might go tomorrow :0) Honestly, I will never understand why people move 10,000 miles to the southern hemisphere and expect anything like the UK. Different climates yes! Obviously. Food? Of course it'll be different and the brands you grew up with and maybe even mistook to be British (Heinz etc) may not be the same. There are big cultural differences yes. My goodness, how dare Australia be so different from the UK? Errrm, because it's a different country?! Who actually believes all commonwealth countries are little, or big, Britains?!It's the difference from the UK that brought us here, or else we'd just have tried another city
 7. I only hate bag searching cuz I feel picked on :tongue:it doesn't make me want to run back to the UK heheh! Maybe in these difficult times bag searching should be introduced in the UK ho ho ho! Grass isn't greener here, in fact it's gone a bit brown 'cos I haven't watered it! As the deodorant ads on the bus say, don't sweat the little things
 8. Heinz beans and ketchup and all things Heinz are available easily here! What many folk don't remember is it's not even a UK brand, it's American :0)
 9. I never made curry from a paste before arriving in Australia but it's so simple! Fry an onion til brown, add 1/4 jar of paste, fry a few more mins, add meat, brown, add tomatoes and cook down a while, chuck in coriander near the end. Ace! I just buy Patak's paste from Woolies, the rogan josh one is great! Best of all I can make them low fat - virtually the only fat is in the paste, I use spray oil for the onions. Oh, and we like hot curry so I add a chili or two from the chili plant :0)
 10. I'm always being stopped to have my bags searched! I hate it! I must have a guilty face! It's mainly K Mart in Chermside and Woolies in the CBD. In fact I'm pretty certain they are the only places it's happened - but loads of times grrr!
 11. Also have a look at SEQ Rents http://www.seqrents.com.au/ though some of the links don't seem to get updated!
 12. Amen to that. If only we'd been able to see what was coming eh?! Your situation is a bit different from ours, but we are now in Australia with a tenant in the house as of November, and with one thing and another (fees etc) there is just no rent coming in - we *might* get some money next month but still falling well short of the mortgage payments! I had planned to send all my earnings back as we can live on hubby's earnings, and overpay the mortgage to save on interest at least, but am struggling to get even casual work - I haven't worked a day in over 3 months. I do feel we'd be enjoying our time here much more if it wasn't for that heap of bricks back in Scotland haunting us, and it means the hassle of tax returns too. Sounds like 'leave it' is the best option for you, but with hindsight bet there are a good few of us wish we'd just rented not bought! The dream of owning a home has gone sour for so many. Good luck!
 13. Hi, I had thyroid cancer in my early 20s. It was very scary, but 15 years on I have a normal prognosis and just take thyroxine every day, as my thyroid gland was surgically removed. Worst case, I would also have had to take radioactive iodine, but never had to ) Hopefully the lump is harmless anyway - this is quite common! Even if surgery is required, things have advanced since I had my ops and it's far less invasive now = faster recovery. I'm afraid I don't know about the cancer & visa implications, but I think in terms of the medical the big concern is contagious diseases like TB. I've read of people migrating with chronic conditions no problem. I should probably say I'm in Australia as a dependant on a 457 visa and didn't have any kind of medical. Good luck with everything!
 14. Aw, I've only just seen this, all the best to Kate for a speedy recovery. I thought things were quiet around here
 15. I didn't pack any coats at all, just sent one with our shipping, and indeed haven't worn a coat since we left the UK last October! I also sent one jumper which probably won't be worn, I tend to layer rather than dress in warm clothes, and will buy a hoodie at some point to chuck on when feeling chilly. Really looking forward to fresher days, and snuggling under the duvet at night instead of chucking it off!

Don't know yet if I'll be working from next week, but I am available and meet all the criteria so fingers crossed - don't be surprised if I'm still moaning about being jobless into next year hohoho! Nah, there are plenty jobs around, just got to keep plugging away. Cheer for now x

 17.

The cost of living is not so bad for us, but I do shop around! Loads of cheap household stuff - our kettle was $7 in Big W! Yeah it might not last forever, but nor did the expensive Kenwood one I bought! Also got 2 packs of great towels less than $30 each, lovely wool duvet $49, full set of queen bedding under $60. We buy longlife food when it's on offer - lovely pasta sauce just over $1 a jar, $20 for 48 cans of Pepsi - and meat is fairly cheap but I've seen ads for even cheaper meat in some butchers, so we'll go this weekend. Even bananas are $1.49/kg now haha! Rent is not so cheap, we pay $440/week but it's a lovely detatched house with aircon etc. I don't think we'll buy a house at all, it was a waste of time & money in the UK, we'd have been better off renting! Pubs are fairly expensive but we mainly drink at home on the patio - best beer garden in town - and should break even on the homebrew next time we make a batch :oD

 18.

Heheh, the temperature's so up and down it's hard to adjust! But it's a sign when you shiver in the evening 'cos the temperature's 'only' 19c! We were out in the garden in lower temperatures than that in Paisley <img src="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/ohmy.png" alt=":o" srcset="<fileStore.core_Emoticons>/emoticons/ohmy@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20" />) Wildlife here is unreal, as well as the fab zoos etc we get all kinds of beasties in the garden - lizards, geckos, strange & noisy birds. Amazing! I just got a call from another agency about a job I applied for last night, they want someone to start Monday, am I available? Hell yes! Hopefully the employer will want me, as I've been waiting nearly 2 weeks to hear back from the first agency interview grr! Hope things pick up for you in 2012, as you say it can't get any worse :oD

 19. Gawd knows, had its back to me. Took me about 8 shots until I got one where they weren't just fuzzy blurs! I can't just walk past this shop, always have to peek in the window and see what the kittens are up to :oD
 20.

I'm rubbish, can't figure out these visitor messages haha! Yeah, nice to have my first non-shivering December. Still feels odd that the coolest time will be July and we might even need the electric blanket at night, got aircon going in the bedroom some nights! Weekends are fun, koala sanctuary was ace, will try and dig out some pics for my little album on here. Weekdays are a drag sometimes as hubby's at work and I'm always waiting to hear about jobs, but am getting used to it and starting to relax a bit. I know things are harder in the UK so can't whinge! Hope you enjoy the Christmassy stuff, not long now x

 21.

Hi charliebhoy, I believe it's generally warmer here than Melbourne, but when it rains it really rains - v heavy rain & thunderstorm today! But the sun more than makes up for the odd storm I think. People are mainly friendly, it's supposed to be a lot more laid back here but then I've never been to Melbourne. Don't go back to Hillington, even after Melbourne it could be a bit of a shocker!
