  4. Hello! Im hoping that there's somebody on here who has just taken delivery of their container and has lots of empty moving boxes and would be willing to let me have them!? Anywhere in the metro area is fine I will collect them! Thanks for reading Or if you know where I can pick some up for free that would be great! Ali x
  5. It's definitely cooler here than in Adelaide, where we lived previously, however, that's not a bad thing! I really appreciate the sunny days here because it's not endless, I also like the rain that happens, it makes the place MUCH greener than SA... By this time of the year I always expected Clint Eastwood to be riding a horse over a hill... it was soooo brown.
  6. After my recent move I have about 50 flattened packing boxes (tea chest and book box sizes ) free to collector. The movers will come and collect them, so if you are interested PM me.. I'm in West Footscray, which is Fabulous, despite what the doubters may say, I LOVE it! Ali x
  7. A few of us have arranged to go to Yah Yah's (99 Smith Street Fitzroy) this Thursday (7th June) We'll be there from 7.30pm onwards There's a few different live bands on (Indie small Bayou, Lil'leonie Lionheart, Ali E, & Minibikes if you're interested) and it's free entry! If you fancy coming just rock up and ask at the door where the 'POMs' are!! PM me if you want my mobile number to contact me in case of being unable to find us! Trams that stop near by are numbers ... 11, 112, 86, 24, 42, 109 All stop Victoria Parade, Brunswick Street and Smith Street. Ali
  8. I came too, arrived around 3.30 (I know bit late!) Couldn't find the Poms either! so I went for a wonder around St Kilda. and went home..... If I'd been thinking straight I would have asked the band to ask for the poms in the Courtyard!!! Maybe a table booking will be better for next time!
  9. Coming from Islamabad, the heat isn't really going to be an issue, and luckily your wife is a Doctor, so she should find it pretty easy to secure employment before you even leave for Australia. (the shortage of good medics is chronic!) Contact the hospitals and set up some video conferencing interviews, set up. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to arrive with one of you already in gainful employment! Good luck with the move!
  10. I'm in an industry (Pharmaceuticals) that recruits almost exclusively via specialist agencies.... and it's the same worldwide. I've only ever secured jobs in my field via an agency both here, in Australia, and in the UK. I know a lot of people have found agencies to be a complete waste of time, but it's not the same for every type of job.
  11. Job hunting in Melbourne seems to be a bit of a challenge for a bunch of us at the moment and I suspect is driving us insane!! So I wondered what's working for you and what's been a complete waste of time and effort!! From what I can gather sending an anonymous letter of application and CV online, even if it's an advertised job, isn't really getting a response, even from Agencies. For me I've found that speaking to the recruitment consultant before sending your CV is a lot more successful. I've also found that telephoning and talking to the consultant at least once a week keeps you in the forefront of their mind when they get a new job in....This has gotten me a couple of interviews in Australia, both recently and in the past. Has anyone found a successful way of hunting for those jobs that are never advertised? Is it a case of knocking on actual door, or are speculative letters and emails getting any response? Ideas, tips and tricks, gratefully received.... Feel free to moan and groan too!!
  12. Many congratulations, good luck with the move... REally hope the house sells quickly!
  13. If you want to house sit, then may I suggest http://www.aussiehousesitters.com. I'm currently house sitting in Melbourne, and have 2 months lined up, free accommodation, all I have to do is look after the house and pets.... In fact the place I'm staying at currently even offered to let me use the Ute .... but I've opted to keep the Nissan Micra hire car.... I'm not the world's best driver and the ute is MASSIVE!! I reckon I've saved around $4000 doing this, which is fab, especially as I don't have a job yet!
  14. Oh! I must have posted at the same time!! I want to do both.... (but not at the same time obviously!!) See you in St Kilda tomorrow... BTW I'm tall, blonde and 'round'! Gary and Sue... I'm going to PM you now!! :wubclub:
  15. That God for email alerts!! Yes! I'll be there 2pm you say? I'll google the place so I can find the address! Thanks xxx
  16. Hello! Well, the title says it all really... I'm bored Sh**less!! Been here for 2.5 weeks. Thought last week that I had a job in the bag.... Still waiting, I think there's been a recruitment freeze :frown: or something, not sure, got told that manager was out of office, but then heard that a couple of other vacancies had been put on hold. So I've moved forward and applied for 3 more jobs, which then leads to more waiting!!! Add to that I'm here on my own, house sitting, which is free, and therefore great. But until I have a job, I don't know when my lovely hubby is going to arrive, because one of us has to be working!! But, well, I don't know anyone else, and frankly the cats I'm looking after aren't great at conversation!!! Anyone up for a coffee? Lunch? Drink??? I'm in Pakenham, but will be coming up to Sandringham and Cheltenham and Chelsea of the weekend to look at rentals. Please save from going insane with nobody to talk to face to face iykwim!! :cute:

    Finding Work

Reading this thread is making me nervous.... I'm here at the moment looking for work. Have had a couple of interviews for a role, that i'm still waiting to hear from. Have couple of other things in the pipeline... but it's not me I'm worried about. OH is waiting until I've found a job to hand in his notice..... He had a nightmare looking in SA last time, applied for loads of jobs but only got two interviews..... in 15 months of looking.... Painful... We went back to the UK in the end and now I'm here again..... hoping for something different in Vic.......
  18. Will you be on a permanent visa or a 457? this will make all the difference to you and your family income. If it's on a 457 then probably not... you're looking at $350 per week rent (minimum for something you'd be prepared to live in) $800-$900 per quarter for fuel bills start off with. The price of food is hair curling (Thank God for Aldi IMO!) and then you have to buy a car (expensive) rego ($630 per year) and then fuel prob around $300 per month for commuting. If you're on a 457 you'll have to have health insurance (unless the company provide it, that's another $500 or so a month) on PR you can manage without if things are tight. on $55,000 reckon on picking up around $3200 per month.... Probably you'll need more money to enjoy your time in Australia, but on PR you'll get family assistance and that will help a lot (no rent rebate though!) It's up to you, but these are the things that you need and I haven't mentioned food shopping because everyone's basket is different... have a look at Coles Website and do an online shop of your usual weekly stuff it will be useful, if not completely real (take into consideration that Lamb is cheap and pork is expensive... in season fruit and veg is always loads cheaper than the out of season stuff, so it's worth 'browsing the veggie aisles) Let us know what you think....
  19. Call the hospitals and arrange a tour. They want your business! Make a decision based on your own values and comfort... Remembering that Child birth in Australia is highly medicalised, and what you want from your birth experience (all mod cons.... Epidurals, etc) or a more low tech approach... Go have a look and make the decision that feels right for you!
  20. I'm a very pragmatic person... don't really get homesickness, I'm happy wherever I am... the only thing I really need is to be with my OH.... That didn't happen for various complicated reasons, so we went back to the UK... He's not enjoying it so I'm currently back in Aus looking for another job so he can resign from his and come back to Australia.... Feelings? I liked being back in the UK, I got to see my BFF lots instead of just telephoning. Family..... Errm, I love my sisters, but tbh I can go back every year or so , it's no biggie. I liked the 'green' but now I'm in Vic, I think it's a bit more green than SA (spent 2 years expecting Clint Eastwood riding over the yellow, parched hills!) Other than that.... Not really bothered... (Is there something wrong with me???)
  21. Perhaps I worded the post incorrectly, judging from the responses regarding manufacturing. All I meant was he's not a carpenter or involved in Food manufacture. He's an Engineer. and is more involved with specialist manufacturing, (one of the few Companies that export to China!) rather than automotive. So thanks for the info regarding the 'other side' of manufacturing! The strong dollar is really hurting Aussie made stuff at the moment, but luckily it seems to be on the way down again.... (dropped 15c in the past 6 weeks) and is set to fall again when the next interest rate cut comes as most economists are predicting here. Hopefully, we'll see $2:£1 again in the foreseeable future, although I'm not holding my breath! Ali x
  22. If you're going down the Joiner route, so long as he has all the bits of paper (C &G or BTec) that say he can do what he does then an onsite assessment isn't usually necessary ( at least it wasn't when we did ours in 2007). I will warn you though, the TRA is like the worst piece of homework you ever had. We did all of our applications ourselves and saved the money you spend on an agent (there really is no need if you have the time and energy to read, re read, post frantically on this sort of forum for advice. As for trade earnings, my son is a 4th year apprentice Bricklayer and his boss is paid piecework between 80c and $1.20 per brick, depending on the complexity of the build He lays around 450 per day and the boss, apparently lays 600!! They do mostly residential work, for the big house builders (but the more expensive ones I think, as his boss prefers the more complex hill side stuff!) So the money is good if you're a bricky! I can't imagine it's much different for a Joiner. Tradies are in demand and well thought of...
  23. BTW you will need to prove that she is a dependent, name on the council tax/ electoral register, and maybe other things (not sure, on specifics)
  24. Do you meet the points requirement without the extra English language points? If so then all may not be lost. It may be that they ask you to sit it or you may as you know lose your money and have to reapply....... Always best the ask the questions and now you have an email address to send your query. I've got my fingers crossed for you!
