Hodgies2Oz
Any thoughts on areas of Victoria that would suit mountain bike maniacs???? I know majority of Melbourne is too built up but anyone know of areas outside of there that might be suitable. Had hoped to go to Brisbane and plenty of areas there, but looking like Victoria now....but hubby and son need the mountain bike tracks or we'll be home again after a few weeks! Thank you
Petals
Look up Bicycle Victoria web site, there are many many bike paths, up in the hills and around the State. There are also books of maps of where you can ride etc. Lots of people are into mountain bikes and also cycling in general.
Guest
Outside of Tasmania you're not going to fid anything on a par with the best of the UK in Australia but have a look here for Victoria http://www.visitmelbourne.com/Things-to-do/Outdoor-activities/Cycling/Mountain-biking We were in WA so it couldn't have been much worse - they don't really do mountains in WA As well as the terrain the challenges we found were the heat - the only viable place to get reasonable decent riding was the Perth Hills and that is very hot a lot of the year and the ground is very sandy and as the riding is mostly cross country rather than downhill it got very dispiriting, not to mention the number of punctures from the harsh bush plants. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and I look back with amusement that a couple who's main hobbies were mountain biking and snowboarding thought moving to Australia was a good idea, especially Perth. francy
We've recently moved over to Albury (nsw) on the Victoria border though and there's loads around here. We went to Bright last weekend and there were loads of people on mountain bikes. Around the Alpine area I think there of loads of routes. Also been to Beechworth (vic) and seems to be routes around there. if you google alpine region sure there will be info on there

Suzukiscottie
The You Yangs between Melbourne and Geelong are worth it for a day trip. A few different sections with varying degrees of difficulty; one is more extreme but all the difficult bits have alternatives. Downhill track too. Brilliant scenery. Lake Mountain, just past Marysville, is nice on a bike when it's not ski season :-) . The mountain biking trails are pretty good, and you get some great views too. Was pretty muddy in the forest section when I was last there, but it was great. Lysterfield already been mentioned, no complaints. Small cafe and bike shop there too. Plenty Gorge park is pretty good too; handy for us as it's fairly local There's actually plenty to keep you occupied if you do a google like mountain biking Melbourne or similar. You'll be surprised! Blade17
Also, if you choose to live down on the Peninsula, there's a few trails and down hill runs around the Red Hill area. Have a look at the mtn biking club: www.redhillriders.com.au
RichardP
Hi Hodgies There's loads of great purpose made moutain biking parks and trails round Victoria. Lysterfield has a great network of trails including a couple of black runs for a bit of air time and is conveniently located in the south eastern suburbs. You Yangs has a nice mix from gentle trails to hairy enduro oriented black runs Redhill on the Mornington Peninsula is just stepping up its profile and has some nice trails and a good brewery nearby by the way Forrest just north of Lorne (Great Ocean Road south-west of Melbourne) has an impressive network of trails for all styles of MTB. Personal favourite is Mariners Run. To the north-east of Melbourne heading towards the Alpine region there are some impressive MTB venues. Buller has just opened a 40km trail called The Epic. Also Buxton has some lovely flowing trails. Personally I think Victoria alone has more MTB'g possibilities than I had available in the north of England plus the chance to enjoy the sport year round. Then there is Tassie which is just a short cheapo flight away with a huge growth in MTB trails both in the north and south of the island where you can hire decent bikes. Your boys won't be disappointed !

Thankfully this isn't the case and there's some fantastic trails in Australia. Even Perth which doesn't have much elevation has some top quality trails. Where do you think Sam Hill (DH world champ) picked up his skills? You'll have plenty of options open to you around Melbourne. Check out the rotorburn.com web site forums for a few ideas

I can only assume you never went to the camel farm or goat farm near Mundaring, or the Munda Bidi. 900Km of mountain Bike track to go at. There are some pretty challenging sections and the camel farm has some very difficult sections. We only do the medium track and we've seen people with full body protection and mean looking machines ready for the downhill bits. That's without going down South where there are some fantastic rides. A bunch of us have been competing in the Adventure race that used to be the Anaconda. Started in Dunsborough for a couple of years and is now based in Augusta. Both have brilliant Mountain Bike courses.
Peach
Of course a island continent larger than the whole of Europe, with rivers, valleys, mountains and deserts wouldn't have any mountain biking to match the UK (smaller than NSW).
