Hey Gerry,

I have looked into schools but only in yeppoon area. I have only been looking at state schools as private way out of our price range! tarrangamba state school has very good ratings. I rang them last week as was enquiring as what year he would go into as he has already done full year montessori and first year of primary but in oz they go on age so he will have to start in prep. But as there school year runs from jan - nov i am startin him mid august and then he will go into grade one in jan! tarangamba also has admin officer that deals especially with international students. very helpful and friendly.

on the banking side we went with commnronwealth as we were advised by my husbands employer. on the holiday rental davids employer puting us up in the Rockhampton Serviced Apartments in Denham st,rockhmapton, we have been told there like holiday apartments, not too sure what they like but will update ya once we arrive.

As for the beer, my hubby can help ya out wit that one! he never says no to a beer!!

Hey everyone!

Hubby, two toddlers and I (with one on the way) should be in Rockhamton within 4 weeks. This thread had been great to read!

I wondered if anyone had any info in regards to midwifery care? How it differs from UK on a 457visa? Also child care for my two and three year olds? We have them in homebased childcare atm.

Hubby will love the posts about meeting for beers, although i'm unable to drink until Jan! Never one to turn down a cuppa though!

hey regarding hospital/doctors you have to have top cover on a 457 visa costs about$360 a month for 2 of us not sure about kids so its private health care, you can also use medicare which is NHS but you pay as you use aswell from what i understand so your options are good i think i would use your private medical as its good. I have a friend here who works in a childcare place so can put you in touch with her to see what its like.

Rocky has everything you need its quite a big town lots of shops and places to eat, pubs are weird wont serve doubles but will sell u a single and a shot lol, they shut very early but the pokie( gambling machine) rooms stay open late so can drink through there the weekends are open later but there not like english pubs more like sports bars but getting used to them. The weathers beautiful in winter hell on earth in summer- this is the locals opinion lol its supposed to be dry in winter but had lots of rain and some minor flooding at the bottom end of rocky. The beaches are nice abou t30-45 minutes drive and lots of places around free to visit. The locals are big into there sports so thats a good way to meet people. Its hard starting over its not like england at all and things u take for granted like ording a chinese take away, late night opening etc are the hardest to get used to but overall i enjoy living here were financially much better off so can enjoy doing things just come prepared and you'll be fine. Good luck everyone keep in touch for beers!

Thanks for the advice guys.

Elaine, I contacted frenchville school and they said they would consider early start for prep providing we can give proof of where his education was at in uk. Nothing concrete but a smidgeon of hope at least. I'll check out tatabanga as well.

My company have put me up at the edge apartments in rocky for 2 weeks and then I'll have to find somewhere else, they're a bit pricey! I'll sort that out when I get over though.

Cant wait, disappointing about the Chinese delivery though! Maybe an opportunity as I cook a mean curry lol

Hopefully see you all sooon

One more question, Skype, FaceTime or what's app, which one works better from oz?

Cheers

Gerry

Hello

me and my partner also thinking about to moving to rockhampton. we have been here for a two weeks "holiday" to find out if we will like it here.

it is so different from where we from, the town has more male than female? haha but we love it it has so many gyms and around, and beef is certainly very nice :)

the locals are very helpful and so friendly, the weather now is very nice, i can't believe it is winter right now. in NZ it is quite cold at the moment (wellington).

if we have everything sorted in the end, the job the visa, and moving. the main thing is my partner will take or be offered for the job, we will be moving here from nz :)

we should keep this group going, and do a monthly catch up at the botanic garden:) thanks for all the help from everyon :)

Cheers

Tina

Hey all

How are all the newbies to Rocky finding it? First impressions etc? What is the rental market like? (some reports in the local news say that you have to pay a lot to get a decent property?)

We are still waiting for our visas (slowly giving up hope!), so we may well join you all in the near future!

Visa through and approved within 2 weeks, happy days!

i'm flying out on Monday and arrive in rocky on Wednesday. My wife and the boys arrive on 22nd September.. If anyone fancies a beer/lunch at the weekend give me a shout.

I'm staying at the edge apartments in rocky for 2 weeks and then looking for a place in yepoon or emu park.

Soooo excited!

Nice one Gerry, where are you working? I've had an offer at the Hastings Deering CAT rebuild centre, (I'm Lillystar26's husband for those of you that have spoken with her) we're waiting on our passports as mine was expired Vicky's (my wife) was still in her maiden name and our 3 kids have never had one. Once they're back we can send copies of our bio pages & get the ACRO police check done. I've been told to allow a minimum if 4 months once I've submitted all if my paperwork which isn't too bad as we have a property to sell before we go.

Hi nine toes (don't know your name lol) I had exactly the same pproblem with kids having no passport and my wife's in maiden name.

I work in sales for Diageo (Smirnoff, Guinness, bundaberg rum etc). Fortunately my company paid for an agency to sort out my visa which really speeded things up.

We just had an offer on our house on Friday so hopefully that'll go through soon. I was beginning to panick!

Hope all goes well mate and keep in touch.

Cheers

At least we're not the only ones, we had a viewing on our house on Saturday but the people who viewed still have to sell their own house before they can make a serious offer anyway. It's quite fustrating at the min because we don't feel we have any control of matters, we're depending on others now regards the house, passports & visa, just hoping there are no major hold ups. Definately stay in touch, we'll all have to get together, sounds like we're all going through or have had similar journeys. Oh my names Stu by the way. Have a good flight, speak soon.

We are moving there from New Zealand, the visa part is done, and we are just waiting. at the moment time, hubby has resigned his current job. I am still waiting the right time to resign, once the visa is not going to be a problem. also, we have to sale our house, and pack the rest of things for shipping :) all good fun, all good fun. i might not going to have job right away, but i am prepared to pick up any office work if available there;) if not there is another option to study a paper at the local university CQU, i guess the mean thing is to get out of the house ,while our hubby is out there earning money, and wife needs to get in touch with some real ppl out there, otherwise it will drive me mad just staying home, i don't have kids at the moment, maybe that is another option? haha

good luck everyone, we should really meet up at one of those bar for xmas celebration, that we all did it, not a easy from point a to b, but we did it :)

How's everyone getting on?

It looks (fingers crossed) like things are falling into place for us. We picked up our car yesterday, got approved for a house in Gracemere and should be moving in at the weekend. I've met some lovely people, including a few from this forum.

Spent quite alot of time at the beach, and the kids love it there-the water isn't the slightest bit cold!

Hope everyone else is all good?

we are still waiting for our visa, it has been about 4 weeks.

the shipping company indicate from Wellington to Rocky needs 8 weeks, so we are hoping by mid Sep we can start to pack and shipping things. otherwise we will have a couple of weeks in Rocky without anything...

I am still looking for a job in Rocky, not going so well at the moment. everything is up in the air, depending on Visa, i can not resign from my current job, since we don't know for sure if my Husband's visa will go through. really just need to be patient. it is very hard.

i need to find a place to live, a job to go to. but can't really do anything until we know about the visa.

hope you guys are not having as much as inpatiant moment like us.

best luck, just hope days will just go faster and let us know.

I totaly feel your pain!

We were exactly the same for 3 months! Made harder by me being pregnant and not being able to plan anything. What shipping company are you using? We used OSS they said 6-8 week from Auckland to Brisbane, and it's actually taken less than 4! It arrives in rocky on Sunday!

We're staying at rockhampton serviced apartments and reccomend them to anyone! Washer, dryer, dishwasher, everything you need! All it needs is an extra bedroom to stop the kids arguing at bedtime!

Hi Nicol

Thanks for your message, glad we are not alone, not that i wish others needs to go through this, but it is just a conforting thing to know that there will be a end to this soon:)

oh well, moving while pregnant that must been quite a challenge, you must be quite glad where things now:)

We are getting the quote from Crown at the moment, the other one i heard is Grace Removals, but they don't do outside of Auckland at the moment, i will give Oss a try, thanks for letting me know:)

Rockhampton serviced apartments, ok, i will look it up. at the moment we are happy with any place as long as safe and clean which i think should be quite easy to get in Rocky.

so hope things are going on well with you and your family in this new place:) maybe we will meet up soon.

Cheers

Hi, I am looking at moving to Queensland next year and was wondering what kind of jobs it is that the majority of Poms are aqiring in places like Rockhampton and Mackay? I am currently a Mechanical Technician in the maintenance department (using SAP) at a coal fired power station in the UK, currently being converted to wood pellet (biomass). Is there much work for my trade in these areas? Where/how did most of you get your jobs in these areas, did you apply online or go through agencies etc?

Hi everyone. My husband and I and the kids age 5 and 3 have just moved to Rocky 4 weeks ago ad I've got a job at the hospital. It's a return trip - met my husband here 12 years ago when I came over on a working visa and I dragged him back to Yorkshire! I know a fair bit about Rocky from hubby's family who live nearby and regular visits but don't have any friends of my own here yet and feeling a bit homesick.

I know this isn't the socialising threads but does anyone on here have meet ups? I'm at work full time now but free every weekend and evening. Will be moving into nice rental property soon so happy to have people over when we're settled.

Good areas - the range (nearer botanic gardens/on hill the better - lovely Houses around there), Allentown, hospital side of Wandal, norman gardens/side of mount archer. Coast of course is fab if don't mind the 40-50 min commute (less if working north side of town). Emu park, sea spray at zilzie, Yeppoon all good! lovely trips to great keppel island, byfield rainforest... Liz

Hello mates

I am a qualified accountant and currently live in WA ever since I moved to Australia in 2012. I have now been a offered accounting & finance job by a company based in Rockhampton.

I was able to gather some information from this thread. As this thread is petty old, I would like someone to give me some helpful tips on the following in the context of the current situation:

1. Best places to live in Rockhampton

2. Good primary schools (I have two daughters aged 10 and 6)

3. Places to avoid e.g. flood prone areas etc.

4. Commuting within Rockhampton

Thanks in advance for your contribution.

KJ
