Hi all,

My OH has received the following email from AHPRA, so we were wondering if anyone could perhaps elaborate as to exactly what they require from us. Category A is obviously our visa which we should present at an AHPRA office upon arrival. C & D however we're not sure, would this be perhaps be a bank statement showing her address for example?

Point 2 is self explanatory so will leave that one. Thanks in advance for any suggestions! Mat

"Thank you for your application for registration as a registered nurse (Division 1) received by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) on 22 September 2011. Your application has been reviewed and is currently not complete. In order for your application to be considered complete under section 77(2) of The Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act 2009 (“the National Law”), you are required to provide the following information. No further assessment of your application will occur until the following information has been received.

Applicant’s Responsibility

1. Section A: Personal Details and Identification

Please provide a certified copy of a proof of identity document from Category A (current Australian Visa), C & D (proof of residential address).

o Please note: In regards to your Visa (Category A document), once we have received all your other outstanding documents (excluding your Visa, if you do not have one at this time) and your application has been assessed as being complete and eligible for registration, you will be forwarded an "In Principle” letter. The In Principle letter essentially informs you that you have been deemed eligible for registration. In order to be given your registration, you must present in person to any AHPRA office in Australia with your Australian Visa. You will need to present to an AHPRA office within 12 months of the date of the In Principle letter. Without a current Australian Visa, you are not considered to have fulfilled the requirements of a category A document. All documents must be certified by an approved signatory (see attached information sheet). Please provide a written statement to AHPRA, should you not be able to meet Category A at this time.

2. Section D: Registration History

Question 12: What is your health practitioner registration history?

We require a Certificate of Registration Status to be sent directly to our office from every jurisdiction outside of Australia in which you are currently, or have previously been registered (regardless of whether you were practising at that time), as a health practitioner during the last five years as outlined at Section D, question 12 of the application form. A certificate of good standing can be obtained from the regulatory authority in each of the jurisdictions you have been registered during the last five years.

AHPRA’s Responsibility

I. As part of the application process as required under section 79 of the National Law, it is AHPRA’s responsibility, to check the criminal history of an applicant. Please note that this responsibility is also referenced in the application form under the Suitability Statements Section. The criminal history check will be managed by AHPRA.

II. Many applications for internationally qualified applicants are required to be considered by the Registration Committee of Queensland. This Committee meets once every month and can therefore cause slight delays with expected timeframes. If your application is to be considered by the Committee, you will be notified via email of the relevant meeting date.

If the above information has not been provided by the 9 April 2012, the application may be taken as withdrawn."

Not sure whether you're in uk or aus - I'm still in uk and sent them certified copies of my passport bio page & visa label (for A), uk bank statement (for C) and certificate of HPC registration (for D, they'd also been sent letter direct from HPC as per requirements but wanted to send something for each category). Wanted to avoid this 'in prinicple' registration thing and hoped this would cover it and it seemed to - I'm registered. Seems AHPRA aren't exactly consistent in their requirements but hope this helps. Good luck!

Yep, they want signed copies of the passport and visa page, plus proof of your address.

The categories are explained in a different document: http://www.ahpra.gov.au/Registration/Registration-Process/Proof-of-Identity.aspx

Make sure they're certified by the right people though: http://www.ahpra.gov.au/Registration/Registration-Process/Certifying-Documents.aspx

The rest of the first paragraph is a blurb that all regulators have to put in that explains the section of law that says they need the information.

I sent them a letter stating that I did not yet have a visa and so was unable to meet catagory A at this time.

If you are in the UK you need to action the nmc to send confirmation of your registration directly to AHPRA. Costs £34. All info on the nmc website. Guess its the same with any other country's registration authority. Let ahpra know you have actioned it when you respond to the above.

If the above information has not been provided by the 9 April 2012, the application may be taken as withdrawn."

See above comments within the text. Ahpra drove me mental. Lodged with them in sept. and got eligibility at the end of Jan after many phonecalls and emails. Good luck

Thanks for all of your comments they're very much appreciated; I went on to research further after the OP and a few things cropped up:

1) We have already had the NMC send her registration certificate and it obviously hasn't been filed correctly by AHPRA - we have the letter from the NMC confirming it's been sent. We don't want to fork out another £34 to send another copy. Do you have any suggestions on what we should do? Our case officer hasn't provided an email address so it'd probably be cheaper to pay the £34 and send another copy rather than make the overseas phone call!!

2) With regards to the identity requirements for C & D I guess we were confused by the following statement from the AHPRA identity notes:

"What special circumstances apply to overseas applicants or applicants who have recently arrived in Australia?

At application, individuals who are applying from overseas and who are unable to provide evidence from each of the categories, must meet the minimum identity requirements of:

• a certified copy of an overseas passport (an EU card is not acceptable)

• if the applicant has ever been formally known by another name, or provides documentary evidence in support of their application in another name — a certified copy of proof of name change (marriage certificate, divorce papers, deed poll).

Applications from overseas applicants will be assessed only on receipt of the relevant evidence of identity, and an otherwise complete application (all supporting documentation provided and declarations made).

Following assessment the applicant will be advised if they are eligible for registration. Those eligible applicants who only provided the minimum identity requirements, and/or medical practitioners applying for limited registration (see below) will only be granted registration upon personal presentation at an AHPRA Office with the following evidence:

• If arrived in Australia within the previous 6 weeks:

o original foreign passport or travel document with current Australian visa and proof of date of arrival (e.g. entry stamp); plus

o evidence of their current residential address, an original signed statement from a prospective employer/sponsor verifying the identity of the applicant OR an original offer of employment."

This I guess is our fault as we were trying to cut down on the amount of documents we had certified but it still strikes us as odd as we have provided the minimum requirement for an overseas applicant and we didn't mind reporting to an AHPRA office which we have to do anyway as we don't have a visa yet for criteria A...
