Well unless he is a permanent resident or a citizen he isnt going to get an apprenticeship, he cant just apply for a visa to do an apprenticeship. He can apply for a student visa to study at an approved institution and that will cost you mega bucks - he will be restricted as to the number of hours per week he can work for money and has no guarantee that he will be granted permanency. He cant get an apprenticeship on a working holiday visa and the restriction there is only 6 months with one employer and if you want to extend the visa beyond the first year to add another year then you have to do some rural/remote service in your first year.

It looks like he would be better off doing an apprenticeship in UK and moving as a tradesman if there is still a need when he qualifies.

Actually, there is a Occupational Traininee Visa (subclass 442) which reads like an apprenticeship visa to me. It lasts for two years, but can be extended to four. From the DIAC website:

This visa allows people to complete workplace-based training in Australia on a temporary basis. The training must provide people with additional or enhanced skills in the nominated occupations, tertiary studies or fields of expertise.

Who is this visa for?

This visa is for people from outside Australia who want to improve their occupational skills through training with an Australian organisation or government agency. People may be nominated for this visa if the proposed occupational training is one of the following:

  • training or practical experience in the workplace required for the person to obtain registration for employment in their occupation in Australia or in their home country
  • a structured workplace training program to enhance the person’s existing skills in an eligible occupation
  • structured workplace training to enhance the person’s skills and promote capacity building overseas. What does this visa let me do?

This visa allows people to participate in approved occupational training in Australia.

This visa may be valid for up to two years to undertake an approved training program (subject to the length of the approved training program). An additional two months may be added beyond the training end date to allow you and your family members to make arrangements to leave Australia or to apply for another visa.

Note: If the training cannot be completed in the approved visa period, you can apply for a second Occupational Trainee visa. You and your sponsoring organisation must meet eligibility requirements again.

So it looks as though there is a visa, but I've never read of anyone gettting one - and it would only be a stepping stone to perhaps a 457 visa as it is only temporary.

The right to legal employment in Australia does not guarantee eligibility to participate in apprenticeships or traineeships; for example holders of a Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417) are not eligible.

DET's policy is that the following persons are eligible to participate in apprenticeships or traineeships:

  • Australian citizens

  • New Zealand citizens

  • persons with permanent residency visas

  • persons with temporary protection visas

  • persons who hold temporary or partner visas for subclass 309, 310, 820, or 826

  • dependants of persons who are holders of a Business Long Stay visa under subclass 457

  • dependants of persons who are holders of a Skill Independent Regional visa under subclass 495

  • dependants of persons who are holders of a Skilled Regional Sponsored (Provisional) visa under subclass 475

  • persons (and/or their spouse/dependants) who are holders of Provisional visa subclass 163 - State/Territory Sponsored Business Owner.
