Crime

I have just been reflecting on my first full year here in Tassie and I'd like some opinions from people here.

During the year I've had an attempted burglary and my car has been vandalised. This sort of thing never happened to me when I lived in the UK. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm aware that both of these crimes are not particularly nasty on the crime-scale, but they've really tainted my opinion of Tassie.

I still believe that people in Tasmania are more friendly and pleasant in general than they are in the UK. Also, I don't think the 'bogans' here are anywhere near as vicious as 'chavs' are in the UK. I'm just intrigued to know what other ex-Poms think of the crime here in Tassie compared to the UK.

I'm sorry to hear of your experience, CarlosG.

I can't compare with the UK but I can say that I have lived here for a total of 50 years and in that time have had one attempted burglary (24 years ago) and no car vandalism.

So I think you have been extraordinarily unlucky to have experienced both in your first year.

Hi Skani, thanks for the response. I think I agree with you - I've probably just been very unlucky.

I should clarify that I wasn't looking for any sympathy when I wrote the opening post. I'm just interested in other peoples' experiences of crime here to see whether I have been taken in by claims of low crime.

Just the other weekend, for example, my boss had a V8 ute plough into his front garden late at night driven by a 16 year old, who promptly legged-it. When his dad arrived to retrieve the ute, he said that he lets his son drive around all the time, because that's how he had learnt to drive. I just can't believe the irresponsibility of someone like that.

I can't really make a sensible contribution to this topic, having only been here nearly two weeks now. Having said that, I do feel safe walking around Hobart at any time in a way that I would never feel safe walking around most UK cities. I do hear/read about crime but obviously there is always going to be some crime everywhere.

We came from Cornwall and in the last year my brother in law had his car vandalised twice outside his house and I've previously had 2 cars and a van broken into and stereos/surboards etc stolen. There were also murders (shootings) just down the road from us when we lived in Newquay. Certainly the crime I hear reported here is no worse than the crime in Cornwall - which I would imagine is pretty near the low end of UK crime.

I would be very interested to hear other people's comments on this though.

Yes, it does make one wonder which planet some people are living on:arghh:

In this case both the father and son committed an offence so I hope that the police were informed.

Please dont walk through Elizabeth Mall on your own at night and definately not in Glenorchy... Hobart is not completely safe at night.

Elizabeth Mall?!? Really? That strikes me as a really safe place - although I haven't walked through there at night on the weekend admittedly.

I do believe you, I'm just surprised. We've just got in from North Hobart on a Friday evening and I certainly felt safe there.

I think a lot of it (from my perspective at least) is just familiarity with the area. I seem to be in a position where I feel "at home" here really quickly (that's one of the main reasons we came here as we both feel like that) and as such feel safer than I would if I didn't feel that.

Is there any reason in particular why you mention Elizabeth Mall?

There was a tourist beaten up down there about 12 months ago late at night, that was before we arrived. We lived on Collins Street for our first 3 months and got to see and hear some unsavoury behaviour along down and around the mall at night. Myself and my partner walked through the Mall quite innocently one night after dinner and drinks down in Salamanca and we were followed through by 3 men around mid 20's who had heard us talking and kept shouting "get out of our country f***ing foreigners" :wideeyed:

Its not a problem during the day and early evening of course. Im talking late at night.

However I also witnessed a fist fight in the Cat and Fiddle Arcade at lunchtime. Domestic bust-up. Security guard at the entrance of Target stopped me going out until it has resolved and police arrived "for your safety" he said. He also told me fights around that area and troublesome behaviour is a regular occurence.

Please dont get me wrong, walking around Hobart, I have found to be quite safe. Im just advising you to be a little more vigilant in those areas!

Sorry to hear that you were hassled like that. Hmm, I'll bear in mind what you say and be more vigilant in future.

I suppose I do have "rose tinted glasses" at the moment so I need to bear that in mind!

Your bound to be seeing things through rose tinted glasses when your new. We did too

Hope your continuing to enjoy Tassie, it has alot going for it (Just not Elizabeth Mall late at night lol)

Its very easy to be "lulled" into a false sense of security here.We initally thought it was very safe, but we have seen and heard some shocking stuff

There have been some very nasty attacks on people here, and robberies and the like

We went to the Country club casino when we first arrived for an Abba Tribute night, and there was so much trouble, and it was mainly very drunk feral women who were causing it. We left early, as it was so unpleasant and we really did not want a beating

Never happened to us before in the UK, so we were pretty horrified

We wont go out at night, because we really do not like the feral culture

I'm surprised that that particular venue didn't have the security to prevent the trouble before it started. I've been to lots of shows at Wrest Point here, which is owned by the same company, and never spotted a hint of trouble...not even drunk, let alone feral! Maybe the security blokes at the two venues should do a north - south exchange.:cute:

I think they probably should:biggrin: Honestly they saw what was going on and they turned a blind eye, we were pretty amazed they dident get involved. Mind the women were a bit feirce, they were probably frightened of them:biggrin:,

:biglaugh::biglaugh: Wussy blokes!! But they obviously weren't doing their job - should have been sacked IMO.

Those fierce women are not the sort you'd expect at an Abba tribute band either

I've lived here for just over 3 years and have yet to experience any trouble personally *knocks on wood*. That said we did have some incredibly stupid neighbours whose negligence set our elderly neighbour's tree alight but thanks to some quick-action from my husband, the fire was put out and disaster was averted. On the whole though, I find life to be a lot quieter and safer here as long as you avoid the teenagers out past their bedtime. :happy_face_vampire_

 to those of you that have experienced trouble here.
