What to do with medicines!

Hi,

Is it best to take medicines on the aircraft or have the packers pack them?

Obviously we'll take what we need on the plane but what about the rest?

We don't have much but we have stocked up on a few key items like ventolin inhalers, strongish painkillers, cold sore cream, ezcema treament lotion etc?

Any thoughts/experiences?

Thanks,

Nats

We are going to take my husband's insulin on the plane (a year's worth) as it has to be kept cold)... the rest will go with the packers stuff I think.

I would be tempted to pack them in the container if there is nothing you need urgently.

If you do carry them on you, remember to check with the country you will stop in on the way as to what drugs are allowed in to the country.

we came over 7 months ago, and both the wife and our son are on prescribed medication, you are only allowed to brings a 3 month supply and you also require a letter from your GP stating what the medication is for and who it belongs to. We gained this advice direct from the Austrailian Immigration and Customs

The doctor has given my husband 1 years supply of his insulin - do you think if we take it in the suitcases that we will need a letter?

Given that our possessions will take about 3 months to reach us, and my GP won't prescribe more than 3 months worth a time, think mine will be going on my person. Takes up hardly any space/weight anyway.

Unaccompanied drugs of any kind must be declared on the AQIS form.

Is that form for when you take it on the plane?

Nope, unaccompanied personal effects statement that goes with your shipped goods, already filled ours in ahead of packers coming this Friday!

So we will be ok to take ours with us...

I see you fly on the 28th - we fly out on the 31st! Not looking forward to that flight. You are stopping over somewhere I presume?

Yes, I don't know whether you need to declare meds on the landing card though - should be OK either way. We're stopping over in LA as we love it and it made excess baggage charges crazily cheap! Hoping to sleep through the flights - prob stay up all night before morning flight to LA, then LA-Bris is a late night flight, but we lose a whole day which will be freaky! Taking a few Phenergan along, excellent OTC sleeping tablet :o) You stopping over anywhere?

I will ask on the plane... he has a year's supply of insulin, so it will probably take up loads of room grrr!

How fab that you are stopping in LA. We aren't stopping anywhere except the required stopover in Singapore for an hour or so... I have an almost 3 year old and we are dreading the flight, so it's just best if we get there. I've not heard of that sleeping tablet, but I'd probably get so knocked out that my poor bub would sit there on his own not knowing what to do! We get 20 kilos for our son also so that's a bit like extra baggage right! How old are you guys and where are you moving to exactly?

Oof, I suppose it is best just to get where you're going with a wee nipper! Hope it goes well :o) Absolutely your son should get his allowance, he's a passenger heheh, sounds like you'll need it.

We are in our 30s (me only just) and starting out in Kedron, just north of Brisbane. Hubby's job is in the West End and I'm working on getting a job in Herston *fingers crossed* I see you are going to Brissie too, whereabouts? It's close now, isn't it?!

I packed a large plastic container with medical supplies and medicines which went away with the packers and I declared it as a family medical kit on my packing forms. From memory I think you have to write down the names of medicines like Ibuprofen, Paracetomol etc.

In my suitcase I took a smaller bag with pain killers, cold sore cream etc enough for us just until our stuff arrives and I declared it on our landing cards. The people at the airport weren't interested in my medicines, more interested to know if I had any sausages?!?!?!?

Yep, I think if we stopped over, it would just make it worse - much as I would love to stop over! We are shipping everything, but it's going to be 8 weeks without any of our stuff, so we have to take work stuff etc also, so our suitcases will be chocka! We invested in light weight suitcases also as our old ones were 6kg each!

I'm 31 and hubby is 42 (although he doesn't look it)... we are going to be in Carina for the first 4 weeks, then looking to rent somewhere in central Brisbane I guess - maybe Toowong or somewhere like that? It will depend where I find work! Dreading the flight, but can't wait to get there - I bet it's heating up now. What do you guys do?

heheh I was looking at getting the ultra-lightweight suitcases from TJ Hughes - then they went into administration and the sales started, and by the time I got there all the lightweight cases had gone :o( still ours aren't mega heavy, and for a princely £68 on top of our airfares we get 46kg plus hand luggage each (extra is for GLA-LAX, Qantas gives 46kg as standard from USA to Aus, not bad!).

I've been researching suitable rental areas and written some in my notebook. We need public transport as I'm a non-driver and want the rents to be not extortionate, yet we don't want an area that's virtually all apartments as I'd like a townhouse if possible, just something with aircon and a wee bit of outside space!

Hubby's the 457 guy - he's an engineering geologist, clever thing. I'm a data analyst in healthcare but could adapt to admin or clinical coding. Hopefully my contact will work out and I can stay in analytical work :o)

Yeah, looking forward to some warm weather right enough, this summer was pathetic. forecast for today is sunshine and 12 degrees but it's chilly and drizzling - I need to go out and Jeyes the garden furniture dammit! The packers are here tomorrow arrrrgh!

Wow, that is a huge suitcase allowance - how cool is that! Well jealous!!

What areas have you come up with so far? Would be interested to know... Are you going to get your licence? I couldn't be without my car over here.

Wow, clever hubby indeed, but you're not so un-clever yourself (good English there)... so you are going for a job at the moment?

I can't jeyes any of my furniture until after our farewell party which is annoying, so, maybe next Sunday we'll get it all done... not too much to do really, just a few chairs and our bikes... we did our son's bouncy castle a few weeks ago, so that is ready to go! lol

Areas we are interested in are Northgate, Kedron, Chermside, Lutwyche, Nundah, Holland Park West, Springwood, Eight Mile Plains, Greenslopes, Annerley - to name but a few! Might might consider further out depending how we go. I've no plans to get a driving licence, not even keen on being a passenger in a car but needs must!

My possible work contact has told me to get in touch when we've landed, and it looks likely there'll be vacancies soon. It's a highly specialised type of work that I won't go into here, but my experience should be very helpful *fingers crossed* - have you got jobs sorted and what do you do?

Back on topic, I've crossed another task off my list - 3 month thyroxine prescription (current stock runs out 2 days after we leave!!) and GP letter explaining what I take, how much and what - though the receptionist seemed to think my repeat slip would be enough?! As long as I can get thyroxine out there - my whole thyroid has been surgically removed and I kinda need it!

Stopped drizzling out - Jeyes time!

I've not heard of any of those places - are they north or west (or wherever)?? Why r u so against cars by the way? Not that I like going in cars particularly, but needs must!

Great that you have this contact, definitely sounds promising - I'll keep my fingers crossed. I am a legal sec at the moment which pays well in Aus by the look of it - not that I'm that keen on doing it long term) so will see what I come up with. Hubby works in graphics, so not sure how easy it will be to get a job in that department.

My mum has had her thyroid out also - and she said had thyroxine in NZ, so you can defo get it in Australia - so that's good to know huh!

What will you do over Christmas in Oz? We are moving over with my folks, but they are going to NZ for Christmas and we are going to be staying in Oz, not going to NZ till the 28th or so... it will be weird being in a new country for Xmas on our own!

Enjoy your Jeyes'ing!!

Yep, those areas are mainly north and east, along busways or near train stations. Northgate has a great train service, so that is my favourite so far! I've always managed with buses, trains and walking and have had no need for a car really. As a passenger I've had a couple of nasty anxiety attacks in cars so wouldn't like to be in the driving seat. Guess it restricts where we can live, but that's tough ho ho!

No idea what to do over Christmas - I've never been a massively festive person and really can't foresee being in a Christmas mood when it's hot out! Time off work is always appreciated regardless - that's if I'm working, but hubs certainly will be needing the break. We may hook up with a pal or two of hubby's - there's a guy he went to school with already in Brisso and another guy arriving in Dec.

I reek of Jeyes now, am just hoping the furniture dries out before it starts raining again! And just when I thought we were organised, 2 boxes of my junk materialise in the loft *sigh* - good luck with your own move!

I'm sure I'll get my thyroxine somehow - just need to prove to an Aussie GP that I need 200mcg a day as that's a very high dose

Fair enough... as long as you can get around. I will check out where those areas are... it's so hard to decide where to live... my mum wanted us to have something sorted for when we arrived, but I explained that just wasn't possible - we need to see where we are going to work etc first... and she's come round to my way of thinking now!

That's great you have some friends over there. Our son is 3 on xmas day also, so we will have a double celebration - no idea what we will do. We might have made some friends by then who also haven't got family to spend it with, so we'll see!

Did you get the stuff dry before it rained? I am dreading doing the jeyes cleaning. Did you do your shoes with it also?

I brought the furniture inside as it started raining so the kitchen reeks of Jeyes now! I also did my walking boots, the only other shoes I'm shipping are unworn so hope I don't get caught out with the 12 month rule! Hey, maybe I've had 'em a year and didn't get round to wearing them?!

Packers here now, going well so far :o)

What's with the 12 month rule? I have brought a new bin and a load of new pots and pans and a few other new things - will that be a problem? We have taken them out of the new boxes etc. I will give all our shoes a good wip eover :)

Do you point everything out that they need to pack - how does it work exactly?

Thx!

Stuff out of packaging should be fine - it's just with shoes it's obvious if they have never been worn!

We had separated 'taking' stuff fron 'not taking' and made it clear what to pack. I wouldn't keep one set near to the other 'cos otherwise you'd have to supervise all the time. Our guys separated and one did upstairs, one downstairs. If you can be really organised and have everything in one room with nothing at all that you don't want shipped that's ideal - we are nowhere near that organised heheh! They were away quite early, around 2.30. It may have helped that I spent a lot of the last 2 days bubble-wrapping my fragile items and boxing them up :o)

Ah that's good then... I would be annoyed if they tried to tax us on all our new stuff!

Ok, well I think we will do the same. We had packed a lot of stuff up initially because we were using another shipping company and we were going to be owner packing, but then we went with Moving Partnership and they are now packing everything... so we have a load of stuff in the spare room, including all the fragile stuff, but they told me they would repack it all, which is fine with me, as it makes sure our fragile stuff is packed properly. I will keep everything we are taking separate - only problem is, that we have a big party this weekend, and so we need quite a bit of space for that, and we will have people staying... so we will only have between Sunday and Wednesday to sort it all out!! Did they let u pack your fragile stuff? I would have thought they wanted to repack it all. I can't imagine a worse job than packing someone's stuff - I hate packing, let along doing it for a job!!
