Help With Cars!

Hi everyone,

now that we have been here in Canberra for 3 days and are starting to get things sorted out, the time has come to start thinking about buying a car.

been looking through PIO for advice re this and there are bits and pieces in there, but it seems that the situation is different in each State. If anyone doesn't mind taking the time to help, can we ask advice on the following please:

1. What do you have to do when you buy a car - registration etc.

2. What paperwork should the seller provide with the car - something called a 'Road Worthy'??

3. Any recommendations re dealers in Canberra and what they should be offering for the price - i.e. warranties etc.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!

Hi there, it's just the same as buying in the UK really - trust no one flogging a car.

The roadworthy is similar to an mot really, as long as the car is ok will cost about 50-60 dollars, honestly if your budget is enough buy something new, you can haggle really hard & just mke sure your agreed price is "drive away" (nothing else to pay) and that's it - if your buying interstate ( NSW ) then it's not that hard either.

If your not in a rush wait and chat to Marcus ( Nik Kershaw) on Sunday, he worked for a car auction outfit so knows the craic.

One word of advice - make sure you have your ACT driving licenses sorted before you buy. You need those to register the car within 14 days of purchase and we had a bit of a nightmare getting ours because the type of lease we have wasn't accepted as proof of residency in ACT and we had to arrange for bank statements to be posted and had to get a statutory declaration signed by the neighbours...
