Shipping Info Please

I'm probably not going to bother shipping much (partly because i'm already in perth and need stuff now and partly because most of my UK stuff is probably not worth shipping). I am thinking of shipping a few boxes though. I'd hoped i could just pack them myself and send them with any old company that ships boxes (as against the type of specialist "moving" companies that seem to be discussed on here). Is this possible? does anyone have any names? and how much do say 1m square 40kg boxes cost?

Just out of interest i've had a price of £3500 for a 20 foot container door to door (birmingham to perth). Thats for me to load and unload. How does that sound? Also is there any time limit for when you can send your stuff ie how long after you've arrived and started living in Oz (i'm thinking from a not having to pay any import duty point of view). I'm thinking that maybe in 6 or 12 months i might decide to send my stuff afterall is that allowed?

Thanks in advance

If your only wanting to ship a few boxes then you wont need a 20ft container, but am unsure regarding time line on how long you have to ship your goods once you have arrived as most people on here send the stuff before they leave. Shipping is expensive but from what i can gather is cheaper than buying new again once your there. We are looking into shipping our household as well furniture, clothes toys etc from Ireland to Perth, companies estimating we will need approx 500cbft which i think is about half a container and are getting quotes ranging from 2500, to 4000.

thanks for your reply. yes i realise a few boxes won't fill a container but at the moment i'm undecided between shipping all my stuff or just the smaller more expensive to replace stuff in a few boxes. from the prices you've mentioned it sounds like £3500 for a full container is pretty good (but as i said this is for self load and unload)

PS if anyone is interested, its true new household items are expensive in oz but here in perth at least everything can be picked up 2nd hand at much more reasonable prices via sites like quokka.

We've decided not to sell everything and just ship the gear we have left over on a container. We got some prices (some rediculous!) and some really good, one guy in particular from J A Coles (Jon) came and said that for all our stuff we would need 275sq ft and that it wouldn't be a problem sharing one, the cost was £1250, he was a really nice chap, very informative and made us feel at ease so and we have decided to use them for when we move.

I got good info from 'gem and si' on here.. new to this forum so don't know how to direct you to the info.. look them up then go from there they gave loads of detail on what they took. Sounds like your quote was expensive compared?

Hi

We've used sevenseas shipping, and have sent 14 tea chest boxes for £450 from Scotland to Adelaide. Well we hope so, tracking them online they're on a ship! Great efficient service so far, delivered packaging and collected boxes within a one hour time slot, which they texted the night before once we chose the day.

Cheers

Gill x
