  1. its worth bearing in mind that there are ways in Australia to buy vehicles for less that carsales.com prices and below redbook. i realize its not for everyone, but for example auctions in Australia are far more transparent than the uk. the bidding process is more transparent - no bids "off the wall", and all newer vehicle come with vehicle inspection reports - detailing faults. I've been involved in car sales in uk and australia and also looked into importing. Thats not to say in some circumstances its not worth it - but for bread and butter vehicles you need to look beyond the straight redbook price. for example is it Australian spec (will main agents recognize the VIN and have all the parts). There are plenty of cars that in UK are diesel but mainly sold in Australia in petrol. As unlikely as it sounds big petrol engined vehicles (which no one wants in uk and so are worth next to nothing) maybe best to bring out here - for example land cruiser and BMW X5 V8 petrol. Friendless in the UK but in demand out here
  2. Thanks Pom Queen. That's what i thought when it was mentioned
  3. Hi Andy Thanks for that. I'll let you know if i find anything more about it.
  4. Barclays International (IOM) will remortagage a UK house for an expat who lives and works overseas: http://www.barclayswealth.com/international/mortgages-loans/borrowing-more.htm
  5. Hi i just spoke to someone from Aussie Mortgages and he told me some lenders will accept equity in a UK house towards a deposit here. It seemed so unlikely that i didn't push him on which banks and thought I'd come home to do my own research. I can't find anything obvious about it on the net, so my question is will an Oz bank accept equity that is in a UK property as part of a deposit or in lieu of mortgage insurance. To be clear I'm not talking about me taking the money out via a UK bank (because as i haven't had a UK income for some time i think that would be difficult). Thanks in advance

  8. 3500 if thats for a complete full sized container thats sounds good (shipping rates have fallen in the oast year). OzWA was asking me about when i previously posted about organising my own container. Its quite possible to ring a shipping company (as against "specialist removal" company) and hire your own container. it works out a lot cheaper. i could have done my own full size container to perth like that for about £2500 from memory. in this instance as well as packing and unpacking (as you mentioned....usually they allow 2 hours for the container at your address and it doesn't get lifted off the back of the truck)) you'll have to deal with customs, shipping agents etc. Incidentally if you go the "specialist company" route about the hardest thing you have to do is decide who to use...they do everything...right down to placing your furniture in your new home
  9. hi, we live near the city centre, but its nice out a mandurah. we'd happily live out that way if i didn't need to be near town for work. its got some great golf courses down there too (i'm a member at one of them:biggrin:), and seaside living is one of the most affordable in perth. its links to the city are good by rail...but the kwinana (motorway) is too busy for me to consider commuting from the south. Real estate (renting or buying is much more affordable down there). as for cars i'll bear it in mind..my wife may trade up later in the year. we bought a cheap run about for her when we arrived (fortunately i got a company car)...but its currently serving her well.
  10. Hi in the end we decided we didn't have that much stuff to take. so we got a quote from JA coles and as luck would have it they had a part full container leaving from Perth in about 5 days (i was already in perth and the stuff was sitting in my parents garage). so from the initial phone call to setting sail was less than a week. the customer service was 5 star. very efficient and everything arrived at my house in perth a few weeks later. no breakages and no hassles. best tips i've got are probably: shop around maybe you'll get a special deal if someone has a part full leaving shortly. if i was going for a full container i wouldn't hesitate to organise it myself. plenty of advice on forums and also there is a customs phone number here in Oz to help you with everything. other advice is bring as much as you can especially electro domestics...washing machines, fridge etc etc. new is very expensive here. although 2nd hand is available more reasonably priced. personally i wouldn't bring a car unless you have a luxury (say £30,000+) car. they are available reasonably priced here if you look around other tip is....its great here!!!!

    Trailers!!!

thanks for your reply. so if it doesn't have rego it shouldn't be used on the road? i started to do a bit more reading (i think the info was VIC) but that implied trailers under a certain size didn't need to be rego'd only roadworthy. Also i've seen plenty of unrego'd trailers on the roads here in perth...but i guess you just take your chance?
  13. thanks for your reply mike. but even if its not required presumably we can apply to change if we want? maybe it will help with car insurance? also might be handy to have some Oz ID?
