Guest HappyTravels Posted March 23, 2011 Share Posted March 23, 2011 Hi All, I have been seriously thinking of a career change into nursing. I have looked into this and think I would enjoy the job. From looking at the entry requirements I would meet the requirements of a post graduate diploma, which mean I would qualify in after two years on study. However I am not sure this would be recognised in Australia. I have seen than nursing diplomas are recognised, but cant find anything about the post graduate diploma. Looking on AHPRA's website it states post graduate courses are accepted - but must be at least 6 semesters in length - which I thinkg my post graduate course would not be (I think its only 4 semesters - but maybe they mean tearms, in which case it would be fine). Guest milliebooboo Posted March 23, 2011 Share Posted March 23, 2011 I am a qualified nurse and the only nursing courses ive heard of are 3 year diploma or 3 year degree. Most nursing courses are now degree. You then need to have 2 years work experience as a qualified nurse (or 7 years if applying for state sponsorship). Guest HappyTravels Posted March 23, 2011 Share Posted March 23, 2011 Its a post graduate diploma - offered by lots of unis - I will go to one of the London univerisities - either King College or South Bank as their placements are at top London hosiptals. The diploma course is England is being phased out - but at the moment there are no plans to phase out the post graduate diploma. piglet Posted March 23, 2011 Share Posted March 23, 2011 hi there, cant help you in regard to if the post graduate diplomas are recognised in Australia but they are certainly common courses in England, I have had many work mates that have done them. is your post graduate diploma marked at a diploma level or higher? Im only asking as my midwifery course was a post graduate diploma but was infact marked as Msc level......If i were you i'd probably contact APHRA and ask them directly. Also you can apply for a 457 visa as a NQ and join the preceptor year (depends on the job offer) over there or apply for the 175 when you have a minimum of 12 months experiences. The King's course does provide some credits towards a masters. I will drop a email to APHRA tomorrow and find out if they will accept the qualification. If you get no Joy from APHRA, you probably will have other visa options. I suggest you consult a registered Migration agent for an opinion. Im in the same boat as you, although I was accepted on to the City University PGDip course, to commence in September. Did you mail AHPRA and did you hear anything back? Guest HappyTravels Posted January 31, 2012 Share Posted January 31, 2012 Just thought I'd update this. I dont know whether the 2 year Masters course is accepted for Nursing. I didnt get a straigt answer back from APHRA. ONe of their requirements was that any course must be the equivilant of so many Australian academic terms - sorry cant remember how many. I decided against nursing, as it just wasnt quite right for me - I didnt want to re-train just to emigrate. However I know that Australia does regognise the 2-year pre regestration course for OTs and Physios. But, I'm not sure if nursing is different becuase the nursing courses in Australia dont specialise (eg in mental health, etc) therefore on the advanced course you dont get experience in areas outside your speciality. But, maybe this would just mean you cant get over straight away, but could do so in an advanced role, where experience in other areas wouldnt be used.
