cost of moving, which removal company?

Hi guys,

 

we`ve just been granted visas to Oz and planning to move in Feb.

We`ve contacted 2 removal companies and are waiting to hear back from them.

 

Which company did you use to move your house and how much did that cost you?

 

We are not moving our furniture, only most important items like clothes, our children`s toys and a few bigger items like 2 adult bikes, a child bike, 50inch TV and a few more.

 

I`d be grateful for any replies

Hi. we've just got to Perth, and I used Anglo pacific removals, we had quite a bit of stuff, and it cost £3600, think we had 64Cubic meters.

Had no problems, they came, collected, packed and gone, easy.

we have also just had our visas, our thinghs were shipped 2 weeks ago to melbourne. we used PSS which were very good. we moveed as 50inch tv which they packed very well in a wooden case/box plus padding, looked very safe! they charge £25 per box of stuff, we have sent everything but i think you will find the prices for just boxes very competitive and the people really helpful

so how much did the move cst you all together? There is a bloke from PSS coming to give us a quote on Thu but it`s still 4 days away, I just want to have an idea what sort of price to expect.

We had someone from Anglo Pacific giving us a quote a few days ago and they said we would have to pay £70 for a tv crate(we are also shipping 50 inch plasma) and the final cost was £1280 + £70(tv crate) $200 customs fees. They said it all added up to 200 qubic feet.

Did you have to pay for the tv box and how many qubic feet did you guys have?

ive just had a look at our invoice, we had 2 wood casings, one for a big glass table and one for the tv, they were £60 and £75 so not sure which box was which. we have shipped 537.00 cubic feet which was 2671, we also paid insurance on top to cover the main things in case they are damaged or the ship sinks!! hope this helps and gives you something to compare

they have said 8-12 weeks, we are expecting an apporx date of arrival this week. i think it all depends on when your stuff is collected to when the ship sails! i am sure like every company they will give you the maximum time to cover theri own backs. good luck!

Hi,

 

We looked at lots of different companies and got three to give us a price. We decided to go with Anglo Pacific. The guy who came out was very polite, knew what he was talking about etc. The packing team were again polite, respectful and very quick. Are container is sat waiting for the next available vessel, and the communication from them since we left has been first class.

Hi

 

We went with ******** They were charming and warned us against other removals firms who make promises and then change the goalposts.

 

They then went and did exactly what they warned us against.

 

The changed the date of packing until after we were to have left for Oz...and then said I had made a mistake with the date. They withdrew this comment after I showed them two emails from them confirming the date.

 

They quoted £3K for removing a 2 bedroom flat's worth of items. I told them before they arrived that the volume wouldn't be so high as we'd given away 36 large dustbin bags of clothes, thrown out half a vanful of old furniture, and didn't need the washing machine taken.

 

They then insisted that the volume was somehow the same and refused any sort of rebate, despite the shipping docket and Australian customs documentation stating it was 25% less.

 

Finally, the promised 8-9 weeks actually took 13.5 weeks, with no explanation or courtesy contact from them. I did note that the Felixstowe departure ended-up being from Newcastle over a month after they said it would leave...so I imagine they were waiting for a lot of containers to send at once.

 

All in all stressful, late, more expensive than it should have been and we felt deflated and cheated....

 

Anglo Pacific sounds like it was a much better option!

Oh Dear,

 

That sounds awful and unfair.

 

We chose to go through Anglo Pacific in the end and so far we`ve veen very happy. They came on time, well actually 3,5h eariler which only stressed me out as a couple of things weren`t ready yet.

They packed the items pretty well and after 3h were gone. We`ve just had an email from them saying that our stuff will arrive in Perth only 4 days after we land. How quick is that????????????? I never expected that. Obviously we have to add another 1-2 weeks for customs but that`s still brilliant.

We are very happy indeed.

We are looking to use a company called Coles. It is a family run company with good references. They have quoted us £3k for a three bedroom house. We are taking everything we own in the way of furniture so sounds a good quote.

We are just waiting for the wifes visa and off we go!!!

Had two quotes so far for half a 20ft container. One for 2700 and another for 2800. Disappointed with that. Waiting on one more and if that doesn't smash them I'll try another.

We are using Crowns, I am impressed by the service they offered, exp when they came round. They semed to 'get' that the whole process is stressy and didnt bat an eyelide when I said I wanted art work specially packed. Crowns are not the cheapest.

 

John Mason's came round and the guy spoke to me as if I was a 12 year old. This did not go down well!

Brittiana were in the house a grand total of 6 minutes!

Finding the right removalist is quite a worrying responsibility for emigrants - especially if taking a large amount of goods. There are many excellent firms and mentioned on thread are some. But there are many firms who do not provide good service and who send out casual or inexperienced labour. It's also important to bear in mind that individual estimators from the good firms can have off days - and you too can have a bad day or forget to tell the representative something important. My tips for choosing a good, cost-effective specialist shipping firm (as opposed to a removals firm that does some shipping):

 

1. Be precise with which large items that you want to take (write them down, room by room) - don't be vague, this is a common cause of discrepancies amongst volume estimates and can result in disputes on later charges.

2. Be certain what help in advance you need from the removalist - do you want cartons in advance to pack some things, do you want everything packed (risking paying to ship something you don't need) or will you pack up some things and ask the firm to complete packing, etc.?

3. Be clear about your timescales - do you want your goods arriving soon after you arrive, or will you prefer that the goods take a while to arrive. Remember, no matter what you might be promised, (door to door) part-loads will take 10-14 weeks with sole-use containers taking about 8-10 weeks door-door in most instances.

4. If it's a part-load and you have had estimators look over your property, use the average estimate of volume to ring around other companies for alternative quotations, they will be able to offer comparisons.

5. Be clear about charges in Australia - is the AQIS inspection fee included? Find out what this should be and don't be fobbed off by vague replies. Be prepared to pay extra charges for quarantine treatments after the inspection.

6. Find out what the costs would be if the volume turned out more or less than allowed for at the time of estimate.

7. Ask if you can pay for destination services in Australian dollars to the agent, for sole-use containers. This gives financial security and and will save you money.

8. If your volume is 'about half a container', get an alternative quotation for a sole use container to load directly at your home - a half a container is about 16 cubic metres (565 cubic feet). If you plan to pack your own, you can add more goods and still save hundreds of pounds simply loading your own goods into the shipping line's container. Be sure you know your responsibilities, though.

9. For sole-use containers make sure you find out details of the handling agent in Australia and be clear what is included in your door-door quotation. Ask for alternative quotes from other licensed agents in Australia for sole-use containers, as typically this will be over 1/3rd of the door-door price.

10. Be clear on what extras are charged. Such as insurance cover - many firms will sell this to you, some wont, but premiums can vary by 100%. Be clear what insurance you have (if any) for owner-packed goods).

 

Finally choose the firm you trust the most to meet your deadlines, budget and service expectations. Decide how important cost saving is over the perception a glib salesperson might convey. Be sure to use a firm who specialises in PERSONAL EFFECTS shipments and not be tempted by another offer from a standard freight forwarder, as they will not reveal all of the costs at destination.

Sorry to hear that Tom and Roz...

 

We've decided to go with a little less well known shipping broker and cut out all the wooly company expenses shipping guys charge!

 

431 cubic feet plus insurance pack and wrap, deliver and unwrap all fee's except dock fees.

 

£2500.

 

We'll see! but the service so far has been first class with calls everyday and emails.

Had two men pack wrap and load our belongings...really nice guys..lots of advice. stuffs gone now so fingers crossed!!..Phewwww

 

Not sure about tips..but have a read of some of the threads Grezzle..but it seems to be an unknown area..you pays your cash and makes your choice?

We have also had a good quote from Coles but are being told by other companies to proceed with caution...... I realise they might to this but not to this extent!!

 

'please be aware that I doubt either company you have received these rates from would be offering a sole use container service with complete packing and documentation included.

One of them is certainly a freight forwarder and in so much would no doubt shrink wrap your consignment as send it together with commercial cargo.

Neither company is Fidi Faim accredited'

 

Thought the BAR was the membership to look for?

I was feeling confident about this choice but am now feeling a little wobbley!

Can anyone help?
