176 for cook/chef

Recommended Posts

Hi, my OH is just about to be assessed for his AQFIII for cook then it's on the the TRA after that, originally we decided that we wanted to move to Queensland on a 176 but since we started the AQF 'cook' has been taken off sponsered skills list but 'chef' remains on.

We've heard that for the Chef route we need an AQFIII and is very difficult is that correct? We are set on moving to QLD so wondered if we can get a job offer or something would it change anything... Any suggestions!? :twitcy:

Thanks Becki & Jay

Ok, well I've done some more research into this and spoken to an agent, who basically said we have no chance of getting into Queensland.

He said if we can get a job offer they might possibly consider us as an 'off list nomination' but I've heard they only give out 500 of these a year. Has anyone on here heard of any success on going down this route and anyone had any success of getting job offers whilst still being in the UK? I've been looking at jobs but most say that you need to be permenant resident, which I would be if can get the 176 visa!!

Please help :-(

Hi Becki

A chef classification through TRA may be possible if OH can show 4 years acceptable experience/training as a cook and at least 3 years working as a chef. Is not easy and I would recommend you get specialised advice on the TRA if you think he has been working as a chef for at least 3 years.

Thanks Tony,

I read on other post that to be a chef he will also need an AQF IV instead of III which he's just done. He's worked his way up for 6 years starting off at the bottom, then was a chef for over 4 years before taking a break for 12 years to do other things. He went back into it and has since been a chef again for 1 year and a half. He has City and Guilds 7061 and also NVQ Level 3. What do you think his chances are?!

Many Thanks

Hi Becki

I agree with Melbournegirlinny 100%. If Cook would get you Permanent Residency in, say, West Australia then trust me WA is a lovely place and you have the rest of your lives in which to move to another part of Oz later.

Also if you do 2 years in WA or wherever, you then have the choice of the whole of the rest of Australia - including the middle of Sydney if it takes your fancy. Of course the sponsoring State hopes that you will "grow roots" and stay in the first State you go to but the ultimate choice about that is yours alone.

I'd run with Melbournegrlinny's advice if it were me. 24 months in a new place absolutely FLIES by anyway.

Cheers

Gill

I guess anywhere in Oz is better then been stuck here! Thank you to you both, We had our hearts set on the gold coast after visiting there and I think we just wanted to get over there and get settled rather than staying somewhere and then moving after 2 years. But then like you say i've heard Perth is gorgeous too and we may not want to move!

I think one thing that is worrying us it that we've been to most of Oz to find where we wanted to live but didn't go to Perth (wish we had now!) and can't really afford to do another rekkie.

Do you have to stay there for the full 2 years? I've heard you have to do surveys etc to confirm your still living here, want happens if we struggle to find work (not that we should if cook is on the list!) and have to move somewhere else will we have to go back to the UK?

Thanks again

Hi Becki

If you move to the sponsoring State and it doesn't work out, you can move on to wherever you like. You do not have to stay for 2 years if you can't stand the place and/or can't find suitable work.

My sister has lived in Oz for 30 years this year. Her husband is a Kiwi turned naturalised Aussie, whose family have lived in Perth since Neil was 4. When Elaine & Neil were in their early 20s they both worked for a sheep shearing team, Neil as one of the shearers and Elaine as the team's wool classer. They were on the road with the shearing team for about 6 years and literally went all over Australia.

They wouldn't have moved back to Perth just for the sake of Neil's family. Trust me, I know my sister and she wears the trousers in their house! Elaine says that they chose Perth because they reckon it has the most comfortable climate, being a dry heat in summer and it doesn't ever get really cold, plus it is well south of the tropical cyclone belt so they do not get any really extreme weather. Elaine is not remotely sentimental about anything or anywhere. She says she would love to retire to Darwin eventually because it has a unique atmosphere uinlike anywhere else in Oz, plus she loves the Outback. However she reckons that Perth is a better place to bring up their two sons who are now 12 & 15 and were both born in Perth.

Have you come across Professional Princess on British Expats? Her name is Samantha. Her husband is a chef and they moved to Perth in 2008 on the earlier version of the sc 176 visa. Samantha is a brilliant writer - a natural - and she has written some super descriptions of how their life has developed since they moved to Perth. Do a search. Here is a link to one of her threads, to get you started:
