  1. Ok, I'm going to stick up for the city life here cos i'm sick of reading posts about how boring Perth is! Seriously, the people saying this are obviously stuck at home with kids and not getting out or live on wisteria drive up in the northern suburbs! (sorry!) I've only been here 10 weeks with my partner, i'm 27 and working for one of the big banks in the city. I have not had one weekend in yet and never met so many people in my life! In fact i've never had so much fun in my life! There is always something to do here and i wanted to make a point to the younger gen to come here and not to be put off by people's comments on here as it nearly did me. There is always heaps of festivals going on you just need to know where to look to find it out! i.e Summadayze, Big day out, Future Music, Sets on the beach in scarborough, fringe festival, outdoor cinema and even jazz clubs. Drinks every friday in the CBD after work is compulsory! Amazing beaches, amazing food of any kind you can think of, great bars, great music and nights out, free concerts. You will not look back I promise. I've not encounted any trouble since i've been here, yeah you get fights and drunk people singing etc after 10pm but that's no different than any city. I often walk around by myself at night and have never left unsafe like i would in Manchester. I'd heard before i came that city centre perth at night is a ghost town, that is the most untrue thing i've ever heard, it comes alive at night! City centre Perth rules!!!
  2. She will fit right in! :-) most of my mates here are Irish, can't wait for Paddy's day next week! I have 2 irish pubs on my doorstep too hehe plenty of magners. Gumtree is the best thing i've come across in my time in Australia! I don't think you can register unless you have an australian telephone number which is a pain but you can still view the rental properties & lots of younger people are doing sharehouse's (also on there) at the minute you can expect to pay upto $300 inc bills for just that! We did that for 3 weeks when we first got here and was a great way to meet new people who are all in the same boat too, we only paid $200 a week which was good. We originally only wanted to spend $300 p/w for somewhere, we only paid £500 a month for a 3 bed house in the UK but once we started looking we realised that it was unrealistic in the current climate over here but once your working it doesn't seem like much as we're both earning more over here. The $425 is at the expensive end, ours is pretty much brand new but we decided we came here to better ourselves, not live in a sh*thouse! (had to buy all furniture too - still abit empty.. gumtree is the place for that too) but we don't pay for any transport, council tax, gas or water so I guess overall it's not that bad. Electric costs so around $75-100 p/m and we have dodo unlimited broadband which is $60 and that's it! I problem that i found is that any nice pad near the city around $300-350 every man and his dog was going for, people pay a few months upfront and are prepared to pay more than the asking price to beat the competition. Getting somewhere off gumtree there's not always as much competition - if your quick!! Subi, Leeder and Mount Lawley are all nice area within 10 mins to the city and the prices are the same. You could probably get a 2-3 bed house for $400 if your prepared to go maybe 15-20 mins out of the city. The trains are really good here so i'd look at the trainline and look at areas upto max 4 stops out the city on the Joondalup (northern) or Freo (west) lines. I'd personally say joondalup and freo are too far away if you work in the city (this is why I didn't choose there, it's only about 35mins but much prefer a 5 min walk!) Joondalup is really nice though but i can imagine myself living there when i'm abit older. Claremont is good for a city/beach combo but still pretty expensive but can get more for your money than just an apt. have a look on realestate.com.au and it will give you an idea!
  3. Hey, I live in Northbridge, in the heart of all the bars (it's not as bad as people say it is! and I'm from Manchester, yes you get drunken idiots but thats all) anyway I was unsure at first but love living here. I can walk to the CBD for work in 5 minutes, theres about 30-40 bars restaurants on your doorstep and always something going on, over the road is perth train station where you can get train to anywhere inc beaches etc and there is a free bus cat that takes you around the city. Its got good little shops and city centre shopping is 5 min walk. I am 27 and probably plan on staying here for 12 months or so til i move out to the suburbs a little to buy somewhere. A 1 bed apt costs me 425p/w with city views but I was lucky to get mine on gumtree without the rat race of estate agents. Rental demand here is super high, as half of Ireland is currently moving here! lol I love you Ireland! prices are defiantly going up. When I went to view properties in the city there was on average at least 20 people viewing at the same time, it's really hard work and took me a month to find somewhere so make sure you have some short term accommodation sorted. If you don't want to be smack bang in the middle of the city and want a suburb for sure the best places are Subiaco, Leederville/West leederville and Mount Lawley...all these places are really trendy with nice bars and nightlife, South Perth as a few nice spots too Hope that helps! Becki
  4. Hey girls, I'm a little older at 27 and been living in perth for about 10 weeks now. I live in Northbridge in the city and love a good night out and looking to meet new people. I'm doing a few exams for my job and the minute but should be finished by start of next month and would love to arrange a night out :-) Kirsty, i've sent you a request on fb Becki x
  5. Hey, Heads up on the FP role for you. I've recently moved to Perth and was a qualified financial adviser back in the UK, to DipFS. I've tried to get back into the role but nobody will take you on even the banks unless you have completed your aussie qualification as ours isn't recognised. Alot of companies will also request that you have started on your advanced qual too. I had managed to find this out before I left and had planned to do the qualification before I left but didn't have time. But that is the best thing you can do if you do have time. It might be a different story in Sydney but it's unlikely, alot of places want aussie experience too. I've been here for 3 weeks now and i've decided to go into recruitment rather than be offered a downscale role for the time being until i have found somewhere permanent to live and can concentrate on doing the exams. Kaplan is the best company to sit the exams through and is approx $2000. Hope that helps! Becki
  6. Hi guys, hope someone can help. We are really struggling to find a rental property and our holiday let runs out tomorrow!! arrgh we need somewhere to stay for a week or 2 until we can sort out accomodation. If anyone knows of any short term rentals or even longer term NOR ideally can you let us know or we can even rent a room!! There is just me and my girlfriend and are no trouble Thanks Jay & Becki
  7. ok, sorry to go slightly off thread BUT.. pixie just mentioned vacuum packing. Can I just ask is that how everyone gets best use of filling their suitcases?? I never found the vacuum pack thing to be that good when i last tried it ( although granted it was a while ago and may be better now) so i've rolled all my clothes as i heard this was a good method and i seem to of got lots in my suitcase this time!! Sad question i know but trying to maximise as much space as possible!!
  8. Glad it's not just me then! I actually comtemplated going to the airport in it!! hehehe along with 3 hats that won't fit it either :biglaugh: d'ya think they'll let me on the plane??!!
  9. yes ladies, had a quick look at underwear, best get ourselves to la senza!! I decent bra looks to be around $50...approx £32 yikes! that's not including the pants to match :-(
  10. good work girls! I was almost refilling my suitcase. I really, really want to take my lovely comfy M&S dressing gown. I know that's daft but i'm thinking it will be cosy in the house in winter but it takes up too much room! sobs My other half was a DJ and wants to ship his records over - can't talk him out of it!!! They've quoted him £800 for about 12 boxes so going to stick a few of my bits in with that photo's, trinkets etc. If it is only a few boxes your after taking then try air cargo. I was quoted £9.50 per kilo with Singapore airlines which reduces once you go over 100kgs. Becks x
