Hi, I've looked on lots of rental site' and in terms of price range Altona looks nice. Does anyone have advice places to live when working at the Alfred hospital. I need to be able to commute by walking or public transport. I've looked at the distance of places but don't know about the transport to get there. For example its says its 30 minutes by car from altona to the hospital but from experience I know public transport isn't that simple. Can anyone help?

Personally I can think of far better places than Altona

What is your budget and what other requirements do you have apart from 30 mins travel?

Have a look at Glen Iris, Ashburton, Malvern East, Esternwick, Caulfield north and south.

Lauren,

There are loads of rentals available in funky areas right near the Alfred. Try looking in Prahran, Windsor, St Kilda, Balaclava or Elsternwick (all these are right off the train and trams).

I have friends who work at the Alfred, it's a great hospital.

Home - Metlink - Your guide to public transport in Melbourne and Victoria

This is a good site to use, you could put in different suburbs and see how long each trip will take. Altona to Alfred hospital was coming up with 53mins, this was a train and then trams, there were 3 of 4 changes of tram which sounds a bit complicated and it is possible that there is a better way.

I have used the trains and trams to get to various places and have found them good, BUT if you are going to be travelling in the rush hour 7:30-9ish and from 5ish in the evening it can be very crowed, it IS very crowded and there have been stories in the paper of it getting worse for some lines in the future, hopefully someone else will remember which lines.

http://www.alfred.org.au/patients_visitors/getting_here/ just looked at the Alfred site and this link tells you how to get there, you have probably looked here already but it tells you which trams to take from the city and which train station.

hope this helps

If I was going to be working at the Alfred and needed to walk take public transport I would look at Prahran, South Yarra, St Kilda, South Melbourne. Further afield I would look at Elwood, Caulfield South, East St Kilda, Balaclava, Armadale, Malvern.

Altona is the other side of the CBD and you would have to probably change trains and it would be too difficult for me especially if I had to work shifts at all.

Thank you everyone. I saw the pictures of the beach I was sucked in. Thanks had a look at some of the places you've suggested and the house' look nice. We're looking at max $250 p/w really. We want to settle in Melbourne but my partner is an engineer and jobs aren't a certainty so definitely don't want to blow lots of money of a rental problem.

Thanks again.

Perhaps have a look on Gumtree for shared accomodation which may be a pain in the short term but lesser of longer commutting time and get you some social networking straight away.

Obviously if you have kids or particularly social problems this would not be applicable.

$250 pw seems a particularly tough budget to work with inside 30 mins if you want even a one bed flat.

Ditto what TT said - you are going to seriously have to look at your rent budget, $250 isnt going to get you very much at all and what it will get you is likely to be in an area you dont really want to live in.

Thank you for you advice. We ideally want a 2 bedroom but 1 bedroom would be fine. We want to meet people and socialise but sort of past sharing with lots of people, student days have gone a few years ago but if we have to it's something to bear in mind. Thanks. I've searched on realestate website and 200+ results have come up in the area's suggested. They look good.

So thanks everyone!

Hi Lauren.

I too am moving to Melbourne with my hubby on 20th April to work at the ICU at the Alfred. Which area u working in? We went out in November to look at areas and really nice ones are South Yarra, South Melbourne, Richmond, Prahran, all which are easily communtable. Think you need to up budget to at least $350 a week, you could get a nice 1 bedroom apartment for this, or if struggling about $300 for a studio just to start you off.

Let me know when you going out there, we can compare notes and meet up.

Maria
