Hurry up visa!!!!:arghh:

PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL

Dear

In the last three weeks Perth has begun to suffer as a consequence of the recent economic downturn with approximately 1000 people being made redundant in the Resources industry. These redundancies have come from some of our major competitors as contracts are being cancelled and projects are being suspended.

As a result, we now have many local candidates, taking our priority, available to fill our vacancies. We have been advised to suspend our international recruiting efforts until we are in a better position to evaluate the market.

At this point, United Group Resources are unable to extend any offers of employment through the sponsored Visa route. Our workforce requirements do not allow for it at this stage. However, we are always seeking to employ high quality candidates for our projects from within Australia.

The United Group is a top performing ASX publicly listed company with blue chip clients and work all around the country. For an up to date list of our professional and technical vacancies, please visit United Group Resources Online Recruitment for more information.

If you relocate to Australia with the right to work in the country, then please contact us to discuss your registration and possible employment options.

If you would like further information about immigration to Australia, please visit Visas & Immigration

Thank you again for your time and efforts.

Yours sincerely

hI GUYS,

WA is being hurt by the economic slowdown, with many bigger projects and upgrades being stopped or delayed. Not to say there isn't work but a few folk are loosing jobs, especially in some of the mining sectors. i notice it to, - more subcontractors are asking us if there is any work going, when last year they had too much.

I wouldn't worry too much ecusehe olk that know still think the WA economy will grow by 1.5% next year and won't slip into the dreaded recession.

Tim

We have applied for about 40 to 50 jobs with agencies in the last 10 weeks and have had 1 e-mail to say the job is no longer available, 1 e-mail to say the job did not actually exist and they were just testing the water to see if that kind of work would have much interest. And 2 interviews with agancies who then forget you exist. We are already in Oz and have been told not to be offended by this as this is the Aussie way of doing things. It's hard not to be offended when you spend all that time applying and writing covering letters specific to each job and attaching cv's.

I'd say that at least the company you were with took the time to replyand give an explanation, most just ignore you.

Sorry!! Just had to let off steam, its really getting to me now!!!! This has all been for hubbies work, I dread to think how I will feel when I am ready to look for work myself.

Unfortunately work is not easy to come by at the moment and the original post's email reaction is the norm - with many people being put out of work, that allows companies to go for local talent rather than recruiting from O/s. The minister for Immigration did also say a few weeks back that 457 visa holders would be the first to get knocked back for PR as they revise their immigration expectations.

My DH has put in about 15 applications in the past month - 1 knock back, 1 interview (but he didnt want to do the undo-able job they were wanting) and that is about it - you are lucky to get a "thanks but no thanks" acknowledgement these days. He's an Aussie and has been around a while - his disadvantage is that he is an older Aussie and there is a (not so) subtle age discrimination thing going on here and everyone knows it. It doesnt help that retirees are being forced back into the workforce because their super no longer meets their needs.

This is very much a country of not what you know but who you know when it comes to jobs unless you are mega specialist talented. It is all quite depressing actually.

I agree with the "who you know" thing that appears to be the norm in Oz. I have applied for a couple of jobs as my contract is coming to an end where I am and one agency didn't bother to respond at all and the other sent an email with the usual thanks for your interest stuff... I know for sure that I had what they wanted with regard to skills and experience and having worked at major corporations in Sydney, etc .. the age discrimination thing is rife here too - Sydney in particularly is very much 'youth oriented'. I went for an interview a while back where they forgot I was coming, blamed it on the agency, but agency said that wasn't so - they just forgot - the whole thing was a wasted day - 3 hour commute - plus all the 'grooming' etc. The couple who interviewed me saw me 'just for fun' the whole thing was a very embarassing farce. And as for the Seek.com sites etc. that show thousands of vacancies in your field - my experience is the vast majority of them don't even exist - the agencies just want to fill their candidate bank 'just in case'. It is quite depressing - think I'll buy an Oz Lotto ticket on way home tonight - at least you can dream!!!

cheers
