Reccie trip booked - Jan 24th 09

Hi all

We have booked our flights to come to Melbourne to validate our visas and have a look at places to stay etc. Our flights are with Emirates (any comments + or - would be good). We went to Adelaide last year with Singapore Airlines and they were superb, but these flights are £1200 cheaper and it consists of 3 7hr flights direct from Glasgow.

If anyone knows of someone offering cheap car hire from Jan 24 till Feb 12, then we are looking for a 4 door with enough room for us 5 and our luggage.

We are all looking forward to this trip so much more than Adelaide as we have a better idea of what we are looking for and also there will hopefully still be some sun for us to have :jiggy:.

cheers

Hi and congratulations on booking your reccie, it will some come around!!

For car hire you may struggle getting all your suitcases in a family car and may have more luck with a 7 seater. Have a look on here Cheap Car Hire > Avis,Budget,Europcar,Hertz,Thrifty > Brisbane,Sydney,Melbourne - BNE this compares and finds you the cheapest, HOWEVER, please be warned that the excess on most car rentals can be from $1500 - $3000, so if someone bumps you this is the excess you would have to pay whilst it went to court etc. You can reduce this to $500 but they charge you an extra $20 - $25 a day, so whatever price you see quoted remember you would probably have to add the excess on. Some people have asked if they should take it out and personally I would say yes, there are to many people who will bump your car in a car park and just drive off, Aussies are known for it.

How exciting - where are you planning to visit? We have only been home for 3 weeks and already I wish I was back there.

What Moving to Melbourne says about car excess is true - the cost is eye-watering but worth it for the peace of mind.

There will still be plenty of sun in Jan/Feb don't worry!

Have a great time...

thanks for the info on rentals Kate. when we were in Adelaide last year, the same applied then we found our from ex-pats that there was a local smaller guy who done cheap rentals to people like us on reccies or just landed. just wanted to know if there was someone like that in melbourne.

we had originally thought about Williamstown as my wife works in Petro Chemicals and Connor does wrestling. The biggest club in or around melbourne is in Footscray. But having done a bit more research, the Bayside area may suit our hopes for moving to melbourne (beaches, plenty of clubs for kids, golf courses and cycle paths to work).

for anyone interested in wrestling or how Connor is doing, below is an article on him.

thanks for that Tess. sounds similar to our experience with singapore airlines last year. something that keeps a 15, 13 and 8 yo happy while Kate and I enjoy the drinks (which will be taken medicinally to help us sleep :jiggy:) would be fantastic .

really, really looking forward to this trip so much now and we still have 3.5 months to go. hopefully time will fly.
