cheese n pickle
Hi all Considering a move to Tasmania, and have a job interview with Launceston council. Any thoughts/opinions on suburbs in Launceston? Ones to avoid? Don’t need schools The house prices in TAS really appeal and we could release a big amount of cash if we sold here in Melbourne and bought in Tasmania. TIA

Hope it is successful. There are certainly suburbs to avoid in Launceston. Two that I can think of are Rocherlea and Ravenswood. They are both on the rough side. I live in Devonport and go to Launceston for a bit of shopping now and again. I like the place. It has a bit of character.

Toots
7 minutes ago, cheese n pickle said: Thanks @Toots good to know Just googled some more suburbs to avoid and also the better ones. Lets start with the not so good. Depending on your housing affordability, the areas best to avoid are: Ravenswood, Waverly, Rocherlea, Mayfield, some of Mowbray and partly Newnham.- these areas are more prone to bad behaviour, lower socio-economic housing. Areas that are most preferable are Prospect, Newstead, Riverside- Trevallyn, West Launceston, Kings Meadows and Norwood.
cheese n pickle
@Toots thank you, this is so helpful. I was just looking on real estate and saw some in Mowbray I’ll avoid there from now on! Also saw some in the other suburbs you mentioned which look good.
can1983
if you dont mind hills and sloping driveways Trevallyn or west launnie is the pick for me. lovely view over the city and river and nice recreational space nearby.
can1983
Should have said if you are looking at house prices and thinking they look appealing that sort of sums up the problems in tassie recently. What used to be $250k 10 years ago is $750k now - and mainlanders still think its cheap today! I couldn't believe what we got our place for

Skani
Yes, agree with the suburbs to avoid given by Toots. Ravenswood and Rocherlea in particular regularly feature at the top of the social problem hierarchy. Some low lying areas of Launceston are prone to flooding: these are detailed on overlay maps here - Launceston Draft LPS - C12.0 Flood-Prone Hazard Areas Overlay 11k and 55k - Exhibited Version (planning.tas.gov.au) There are also some pleasant villages within commuting distance of Launceston eg. Evandale, Perth, Longford, Carrick.

DWallen
I live in Launceston and have been here two years. House prices have come down a lot in that time (and are probably still going down a bit). Just to add to the suburbs suggested above, I'd also add East Launceston and South Launceston. If you're looking at a slightly more mixed area then Invermay, but look at the flood maps first as most areas are subject to flooding (there are a few roads on the east wide of the Invermay road that aren't).
