Have you been "stuck abroad" during the COVID-19 Pandemic?

Hi All,

If anyone has a spare 5-10minutes, researchers from UNSW Sydney are undertaking this new study aimed at examining your experiences with trying to return to your country of residence during the COVID-19 pandemic.
We are interested in seeking those people who have been affected by travel restrictions (either by your home country or another country) and as a result have had to change travel plans.
Very little is known about the impact of travel restrictions on individuals, and we would like to understand the positive and negative impacts on people. We would also like to use this information to inform governments on how they can support people better in the future.
The research study is looking for people who:
-Are aged 18 years and above
-Can read and understand English
-Have tried to return to your country of residence but have had your travel plans changed

Not great timing and a bit tone deaf, to be doing something like this now, and a waste of time.

The government is battling a huge emergency in your city and you are worried about the inconvenience on people not allowed to come home.

People should have come home when the government implored them to at the start of covid.

We all know the situation now until the population is fully vaccinated.

Why is it tone deaf? I would assume that the research being conducted has not just been pulled out of thin air. Person/persons conducting the research will most probably be studying their graduate/post graduate etc. and as such are doing a research paper. These are often chosen for reasons of personal interest or contemporary issues, related to area of study. They will already have been working on this research project for some time, so current status in Sydney is irrelevant. It can be quite difficult to find an area of study that is or has not already being explored. Good luck with your research, I hope you find plenty of participants. Shame you don’t seem to have included those of us unable to visit family overseas, but are denied exit as citizens or PRs of Australia.

Research creates knowledge 👍

This might be the most ill informed post you have made Parley and that is saying something.

The government explicitly asked people on holiday and business trips to come home, and also explicitly asked people who were working or living elsewhere to stay put.  For a multitude of reasons those people - Australian Citizens and permanent residents, and their families - now need to come back to Australia.  Unemployment, visas running out, family tragedy, illness, relationship breakdown.  To be excluded from your country, and have your country make bascially zero effort to help you come home, in over a year is heartbreaking at a minimum, and causing severe mental distress at worst.

There is only one person here who is tone deaf.  Actually no sadly that isn't true, millions of Australians have bought the political bullshit blaming returning travellers for outbreaks, to deflect from the failures of the Australian Governments.

Hi Pippa

I'm sure you have already seen, but I can recommend sharing on the Facebook groups "Australians Stranded in the UK" and Australians stuck around the world".

Good luck, and thanks for looking into this - it is causing real distress to thousands of people.
