My husband has possibility of work in South Australia. We are just looking at costs at moment. Do we all have to apply for seperate visas or does my husband apply for one for all of us as a family. Do you know how much it’s likely to cost to move. We are a family of 2 adults and 6 children. We also have another child who is almost 20 so won’t be coming with us. My second child is 17 and would be 18 in October, could this also prove to be a problem. Many thanks

He’s 38, a flooring installer. We looked into moving a long time ago but didn’t do it and now I’m looking again it’s all different. It says he has to have been employed for two years previous to applying. He’s been doing it for almost 19 years but self employed since 2012 would that go against him

No, but he made need a skills assessment which can be harder to sort out if he has been self employed, but certainly no deal breaker. It just means a bit more effort. 

You do though need to be very careful about which visa it is. If it is being sponsored by an employer, there is a very good chance it will be a 457 visa. This is a temporary visa which is valid for either two years or four depending on which list it appears on. It is important that you fully understand the nature of a temp visa as there are a lot of pitfalls. These include:

Some states charge for education - I don't know if SA does, but check. 

College and university level would certainly be at international student rates which means no help and very high fees. 

Dependents - wives and children can find it difficult to find work due to the temp nature. 

If he were to lose his job for any reason, you would have 60 days to leave the country. 

Most of all that you understand a temp visa is what it is. A chance to live in Australia temporarily.

Hi Anne.

It is generally best if you can obtain a permanent skilled visa - or a provisional subclass 489 skilled sponsored visa - rather than an employer sponsored 457 visa when you are in many ways beholden to the whims of the employer.
