I would not recommend you do the medicals early as it doesn't speed up the process. But, it does mean that once taken you must make your first entry into Australia within 12 months of the police check or medical, which ever is earlier. If there is a delay, then you can face a panic. Also, there only valid for 12 months. Delays can occur for all sorts of reasons and if they have reached the point in processing the visa where medicals get looked at, then you would need to redo them.
