Im about to apply for our sons Australian passport born last month here is oz and we are both on pr, he has got his oz birth cert and I believe we just apply and get his oz passport, but I found this:

Is this really needed or just another money making thing.I don't see why this might be needed if he is born in oz and has oz birth cert ok we are uk citizens but here on pr.

I'm sure the aus post office will ask for the above if we don't meet the requirements. but was wondering about this.

Or is this old now and no longer required

Having a citizenship certificate could be handy later in life but he shouldn't need one to get a passport at this point in time. Having a certificate is more for later on, especially if living abroad, or if his passport lapses and then he needs a new one.

When my Australian born grandson got his passport he had to show his parents residency status despite having an Aussie birth certificate

His parents my son and daughter in law are both immigrants

This the best answer..Check the bold one ...hurry just till 31 march 2016 after that you need evidence

[h=1]What if I was born in Australia on or after 20 August 1986 and one of my parents was a permanent resident of Australia at the time?[/h]If you were born in Australia on or after 20 August 1986 and one (or both) of your parents was a permanent resident of Australia at the time, you will need to provide both of the following to the Australian Passport Office (APO) to prove your Australian citizenship:

  • your full birth certificate issued by an Australian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (RBDM)
  • an Australian citizenship certificate.

You can apply for an Australian citizenship certificate by lodging Form 119 Application for evidence of Australian citizenship (445KB PDF) with certified copies of the required documents and the application fee.

Alternatively, until 31 March 2016, you might be able to provide your parent’s foreign passport with an original visa label showing their status as a permanent resident at the time of your birth. You must have been born no more than five years after the date the visa was granted. If the visa was granted outside Australia, your parent must have arrived in Australia before you were born.

The following documents are not acceptable as proof of your parent’s permanent residency for Australian passport applications:

  • Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) printout
  • visa grant notification letter
  • Certificate of Evidence of Resident Status (CERS)
  • Certificate of Status for New Zealand Citizens in Australia (CSNZCA).

These documents only provide proof of a person’s visa status on the day they are printed and are not sufficient proof of a parent’s resident status at the time you were born. You should take into account our processing times and also passport processing times before booking any travel.
