Does anyone know how much medical insurance is in OZ, we have been looking and obviously realise its not like the UK (NHS), does anyone know how it works in OZ? Do you get insurance like you would going private here, do some employers include health insurance? Or do you do it alone and pay something per month. If its the latter how much is it for a family of four (2 kids and 2 adults)?:realmad:

There is free medical treatment available here under the governments Medicare system. But, as it is in the UK, there are waiting lists for surgery and to see a specialist, particularly if you live in a country area. My husband and I have full medical insurance and it cost $257 per month. I'm not sure what family costs are sorry. Some employers do have medical schemes but not all.

You will pay into medicare at a rate of 1.5% of your taxable income unless you are a low income earner. Pretty much everyone pays that. With medicare for most doctors there is a co-payment which runs to about $30 for every visit to a GP (the total is 50 - 60 and you get about 30 back from medicare). Hospitals are free which is fine if you are very very sick but not a good option if you are only a little bit unwell.

On top of that as Yorkshire Lass has said, is an optional private insurance - ours is top cover and it was family but now just two of us and we pay about $250 a month. That also includes optical and dental cover as well because they arent free here either.

Some employers will let you salary sacrifice your health insurance premiums I believe but employers generally wont be paying them.

If you come here on any sort of temporary visa then you will need to take out private medical insurance.
