When looking for a migration agent, you should make sure they are MARA-registered and then go on recommendations or who you are comfortable with. Their location shouldn't be an issue since most will work with you via email or perhaps Skype/phone, so seldom are face-to-face meetings required. There are several good migration agents who post regularly on this forum - look for usernames WRussell, Raul Senise and Alan Collett.

The application fee is $6,885, and then costs for medical and police checks would be on top of that. If any documents aren't in English (depending on where the applicant is from), you need to have them professionally translated. If you apply online, you can upload colour scans of the originals without needing to go through the time or expense of having documents certified which is always good. If you use an agent, then their fees are separate.

Spouse visas are usually pretty straightforward, have a read through the requirements and see if you really need to pay an agent.

If you do want one, make sure they are MARA as already stated.

The PMV has lighter requirements in that you don't need to provide evidence that you're already living together, have shared finances, etc. but it lengthens the overall process. The PMV takes 10-14 months to get, and lasts for 9 months. During those 9 months the visa holder must enter Australia, must get married, and then must apply for a partner (820/801) visa, in that order. The partner visa then can take anywhere from 1-8 months, and 2 years later (after applying) you submit additional paperwork to prove your relationship is still ongoing and they give you the PR version which is the 801 visa.

If you wait until you get married, you'd apply directly for the 820 visa and need to provide considerably more evidence that you are a genuine relationship with shared finances, shared social life, etc. Without holding the PMV first, the partner visa takes 12-15 months to process, and 2 years later (after applying) you submit additional information as above in order to get the PR version (801). Overall the visa fees are the same - what you pasted above is the cost of the partner visa if you apply from a PMV.

hi alan, in view of the resources on the internet and it's straight cut process, i decided to file on my own rather than going thru an agent. many thanks for wanting to help.
