tina0101
The family are coming over in January and we are off to the Great Ocean Road for a week or so. We are stopping at a few places: Philip Island, Apollo Bay, Port Fairy, Robe and ending up in the Barossa Valley. Wondered if anyone had any tips for things they really enjoyed doing along the way or places that we may not see unless told about! Doing the penguins on Philip Island and the helicopter ride at 12 Apostles, but would like to hear if anyone has got anything else they would recommend doing Cheers
Freckleface
We took a picnic lunch down to the beach at the bottom of Gibsons Steps. It's lovely down there and well worth the climb back up.
Suzukiscottie
If they survived the cull, plenty of Koalas at Kennet River and along the road to Cape Otway Lighthouse.
Freckleface
The Otways is well worth a visit if you like rainforests. Melba Gully is gorgeous and if you walk along the tracks at night you can see thousands of glow worms glowing. To say it is beautiful doesn't really do it justice. Guest The Pom Queen
Would Philip Island be best as a day trip once you are back as when we lived over there it wasn't possible to get across to the other peninsula
Guest The Pom Queen
Otway Fly is a lovely place to spend a few hours if you struggle walking they have a golf cart that takes you down to the start of the walk http://www.otwayfly.com/tickets/treetopwalk/
Guest The Pom Queen
Also forgot to mention Flagstaff Hill, it is a great show and shares the history of the GOR http://www.flagstaffhill.com/plan-your-visit/shipwrecked/
theonetruechris
the lighthouse at Airies Inlet is where they filmed round the twist. Have you ever, ever felt like this. Had strange things happen, are you going round the twist

Mike@Bonbeach
Tina Just a little bit of advice on the penguin visit. Even if it's 30c in Melbourne make sure you take something warm to wear when you see the penguins, if there is a southerly blowing, it can get bitterly cold. I'm speaking from experience, we left South Melbourne area at around 30+c wearing shorts and T shirt and we literally froze while waiting for the "show". starlight7
Yes Philip Island is not really on the way to the Great Ocean Road, it is the other direction. You can go on the ferry though http://www.searoad.com.au/timetables-fares/ and I guess that is what you have in mind?
BeeBoDee
We went from Adelaide to Victoria last year and drove along the Great Ocean Road. We had a night in Naracoorte, SA - the caves there are amazing! We also stopped at Mount Gambier for a few hours. The lake wasn't in its 'blue' season when we were there, but we still found it pretty impressive. We also had a walk around Mount Schank and drove through the Coonawarra Estate which was beautiful x
tina0101
Can't work out how to edit my own post!! Just to clarify - we're going to Phillip Island first and then heading to the Great Ocean Road. I should've worded it better!!! Thanks for the ideas - keep them coming!! srh82
Aireys Inlet is nice and so is Lorne. Apollo Bay is rundown and a bit rough in my opinion.
