Hi

From what I have read it is extremely difficult to get accountancy jobs anywhere in Australia. Victoria and Queensland don't have any accountants on their wanted list, whereas the other states do, so that could be taken as an indication that those areas would be the most difficult.

I am a qualified accountant too but if we are able to move to Australia we would be expecting my husband to be the main earner.

Do you already have your visa?

CPA will assess you as an accountant and will look at various accounting duties which will encompass broad range of accounting categories. While auditor and management accountant will look for very specific experience. I do not know what type of accounting experience you have but may be it is a good idea to look at the numerous accounting job ads to get an idea where most of your experience will fit.

To give you an example, most of my experience was related to systems but CPA still recognized it as accounting experience.

DianaK does the CPA advise the DIBP or will they do their own assessment? I had planned to get ICAA to do the skills assessment as they have a fast track and can do it in a week. Would you advise using CPA instead? If it takes too long I would risk all the places being filled and accountant taken off the list

We are planning to move to victoria mainly Melbourne in july 2016

My wife has done ACCA and is an associate member at present, Kindly advise is she considered a registered accountant in Australia or does she have to do further studies to pursue her career in accounting and finance, do u think she has any scope here. She has totally 7 years of experence.

In your opinion what would be better place to move with her educational background to seek employment.

ACCA is not well known in Australia so expect some frustration as jobs ask for people to be CPA qualified, especially for larger companies where CV's are likely to be screened by some HR assistant following instructions. However persevere and you will find either expat Brits hiring, or Australians that have worked in UK or Asia that will recognise it, or simply a local person willing to give you a go (possibly having been told by a recruitment agency that it's the UK equivalent), but most likely this would be smaller, less proceedure driven companies. So in short she will find something but there may be a month or two of frustration first, which is very annoying given the workload undertaken to complete ACCA (especially compared to what I have heard about CPA!). Is it worth doing more study? Definitely not!

You just have to call them and ask. It has been a while since I have done the assessment. It is early March and if you are really organized you might be able to get the assessment done on time. DIBP are considered an independent institution but "unofficially" they will consider the CPA opinion unless there is something that is obviously not "right". The assessment is not that expensive and I think that in your case, considering the time constraint you have to try it, even if it is to get assessed by CPA and ICAA or Vetassess at the same time. This is an option for you, if you are not sure which institution will provide the most favorable assessment in your situation. And then you can decide. What I think is that ICAA might be more restrictive in regards to what they consider accounting experience, but I am not an expert and I am not aware what is your accounting experience. The content of your employment letter and how your duties are described is very important and will contribute a lot to the outcome of the assessment.

You can also try and call them at this number +61 3 9606 9677 (outside of Australia). I have noticed on their website that they estimate 10 to 15 business days for processing, from the date they receive the documents. I personally sent all my documents with a courier and it was there within 3 days. Don't you have an option to contact them in UK? I am pretty sure that there was a discussion here about that but I am not much help as I am not familiar with their office in UK. Do you have your IELTS results? This is what took the longest time for me to get when I was collecting all documents. Also, I put a lot of effort in providing a very detailed syllabus related to my university degrees as they were not available and I had to write them myself. It was all worth it in the end. I hope that things will work out for you. Let me know if I can help with any other information.

When I did mine it stated up to 5 days, this changed during my wait to up to 10 days and finally changed to 10-15 days which is when I received mine back, so they do update this timeframe.

They also have a UK office as well as when I did my membership (CIMA mutual recognition) they rang me from the UK, so the UK office might be able to help.

Thanks a lot for your prompt, positive And to the point assistance. Yes I have my IELTS results, we already have the PRs, Presently I aint in UK , I am away from home on an assignment and will reach home only around may-2016. That is when I will send my documents for skills assessment to the CPA. In the meanwhile I will call them tomorrow and find out as you have suggested.

Thanks a tonne for all the help and concern.

I was going through the requirement of Accountants as per the ANZSCO code to check if any states are sponsoring in order to get an idea where the prospects are greater, but it seems the ceiling is either reached or is very near to reaching.

Looks like australian university has churned quite a few accountant and the remaining gaps have been filled by expats. Lets see where the turmoil takes us in Down under.

It does not matter what is the official statistics. The reality is that there are thousands of international students that graduate as accountants and this has a lot of impact on the job market. The main problem is the so called local experience and in many cases the industry. From personal experience, solid accounting experience in the Oil & Gas industry is not really what the companies in Sydney are looking for. It will be great for Perth may be but not in Sydney. And if you are in a situation where you are overqualified for junior positions and you do not have a local experience for the more senior roles then it might be tough to find a job. There is an option to enroll in an internship, where you pay from 1,500 to 3,000 and work for free to get local experience and a reference from a local employer but not everybody is prepared to do that.

Hi diana,

I just wanted to clarify that my wife is on dependant visa, so for purposes of acquiring a job is it required to have the skills assessed?

WRT the detailed accounting duties performed by my wife she has done the following:

Full function management of accounts payable

Be the Accounts Payable point of contact with key stakeholders

Liaising with suppliers and perform reconciliations

Maintain and develop relationships with existing suppliers

Review and analyse current processes identifying key areas of improvement

Other tasks as directed by the Finance Manager

Experience in an Accounts Receivable role or similar

Experience in using an ERP based Accounts Receivable system

Experience in reconciliation of debtors accounts

Responsible for accurate invoicing of monthly charges,

Receipting and timely collection of outstanding debts from customers.

Reduce the ageing of all debtor balances,

escalation of significant issues to management, and detailed/accurate reporting..

Where do we stand chances of getting a job in Australia..

The duties listed are more of a clerical / administrative role. I would imagine the chances of securing such roles are much greater than if your wife was looking for more senior accountancy roles.

I wish you both the best of luck.

  • 2 weeks later...

I got a letter of good standing - basically saying i was paid up and hadn't been struck off. I had only just passed so didn't have my certificate to send. I also asked them for an exam transcript which detailed actual exams passed and scores in each. Finally I sent a syllabus detail of each exam that I have from my study notes - not sure if it was needed or not.

Have you sat your English exam ?

English exam is on 23rd March, but I'm expecting ICAEW to take at least a few weeks to process this letter. Not sure whether to wait until I have English results or just push on with this too. Is there an time limit for this letter? I got one back in 2005 when I first considered applying to Australia!

Ask for the letter and if it isnt with you by the time you pass your english exam apply for skills assessment without it by sending your certificate. Have you considered assessment with ICAA ? They may approve your ICAEW with certificate alone ?

ICAA was my first plan, especially as they have a fast track and can do it in a week or 2, however, I am not confident on the amount of experience I can claim, and it was previously mentioned on the thread that CPA will also assess experience, so that's why I was going to go with CPA. Do ICAA also do that?

Not sure if you saw but the last round of invites was reduced substantially for accountants so if they keep it at the lower level between now and June it would mean the ceiling won't be reached early. Good news for you if it takes you a bit longer to get everything ready.
