Vikki81
Hi all, Im currently exploring the student visa options - ive already explored PR and Partner visas. I just had a question regarding the expiry date of the visa. If someone was to do a one year course how long after the course finishes do you get to remain in Australia (I know this will probably change for people but just asking generally). Will there be enough time to get a skills assessment done to apply for a Permanent visa. Thank you all
Ozmaniac
The length of stay is determined by the length of your course.

Longer than 10 months and finishing at the end of the Australian academic year (November – December) Your visa will usually be granted to March 15 of the following year.

Longer than 10 months (finishing January - October) Your visa will usually be granted for two months longer than the duration of your course.

10 months or less Your visa will usually be granted for one month longer than the duration of your course.

If your student visa expires before your graduation, you can apply for a Visitor visa. You will need a letter from your education provider which states the date of your graduation. Check the website of the relevant skills assessment authority for info on how long assessment is likely to take. Add a few weeks to be on the safe side and remember that it could take at least another couple of weeks (or more if your occupation is pro-rated) after getting your skills assessment before you can get an invitation to apply for a visa. blossom
Have you checked IF you could pass the skills assessment at the end of your course for pr? There are only a couple of jobs which don't require post qualification experience.
MaggieMay24
So far you've asked about WHV for citizens of Somalia, 190 visas, partner visas from Thailand, Industrial Engineers from Iran/Iraq and parent visas. If you're trying to formulate a visa strategy, it may be a good idea to speak with a migration agent. An initial consultation would be low cost and a worthwhile investment. Quoll
Simple answer - no, in general a one year course in Aus will not entitle you to stay there for ever!
tyuntla
Normally for student visas which were granted on the basis of an eCOE of a tertiary institution that adheres to a conventional Australian academic year (March-November), your student visa would expire on the next March. For example if one started their course on March 2011 and completed it in November 2011, the student visa will expire on March 2012.
