Quoll
I'm pretty sure mine is 45litres plus day pack although I don't use the day pack any more. Mine was not quite full yesterday and weighed 15.5kg. It's a Kathmandu very much like this - so it could be 50+15 I suppose. http://www.kathmandu.co.uk/packs-and-bags/entrada-pack-v2-midnight-blue-1.html I really like my pack but I haven't needed to put a sleeping bag in it - there's a bottom compartment which I ise for shoes but it'd take a lightweight sleeping bag I should think. Whichever one you go for, try it on in the shop and ask them to put 20kg in it so you can see how the harness suits (I'm a short female so adjustability is important) i find the zip up strap cover invaluable for air travel having had straps ripped with previous generations of packs. This trip I invested in some Eagle Creek packing cells - very impressed! I like them and will definitely use them again. My son swears by his Kifaru ones but they're only available on line I got a couple of these sets http://www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/eagle-creek-pack-it-specter-cube-set-b2210146?id_colour=
Johnny Kash
Ive always used DaKine, right back from my snowboarding days and can recommend  Not the cheapest but build quality and features are first class. Ive one about 12 years old which I still use every other day for tennis or going to the beach.

Guest
I'd have a serious think about whether you are 'backpacking' or 'travelling' - if you are mostly going to be transiting by air (or even by train or bus) rather then trekking for miles then a wheeled holdall can actually be better. Some come with back straps too (although these are definitely a compromise and not as comfortable for hours of trekking as a proper rucksack) I got this when we did a RTW trip and it was perfect..http://www.aspenofhereford.com/high-sierra-freel-rolling-backpack-with-removable-day-backpack-finished-in-true-navy-royal-cobalt-and-ash?gclid=CjwKEAiA1-CjBRDOhIr_-vPDvQYSJAB48SmEFNfYxkwGZIGFk5DfxTl9iq4UwySVOJn-d4yl_WKWQBoCownw_wcB Depending on the airline if you zip the day bag off and put your lap top in it you can get away without checking luggage in. Superb quality and still going strong 6 years later and as well as being to Australia or back at least half a dozen times, I use it most weeks on business flights. It won't be as light as a rucksack but since in most situations you can wheel it then you are far better off, and it does have fairly decent back straps if you need them. MattD
I've just brought a Berghaus 60+10 for my trip. They seem one of the better brands. Would definitely recommend

JonathonS
http://www.minaal.com/ I have the Minaal bag, it was a Kickstarter project and is a backpack that opens up like a suitcase. Really good with organization pockets, including one specifically for your passport. Yup, at 35L this is my only bag, and I'm on the road for years. Some people think I'm crazy when they see how small my bag is.
