Rom Pom
dear everyone, its so great to find a site to share these experiences on. Well, my dilemma is this. We've been in OZ for 4.5 years and have got PR, a job etc but my wife wants to return to Finland. Do we still have to declare our income for tax purposes in OZ because of the PR? I was just arranging to have everything reported here, but have stopped. Does anyone know how you can reverse PR? If that's necessary if we are moving back? blossom
You would still have to do a tax return for this financial year if you have earnt money here. After that you wouldn't be 'resident for tax purposes'. Your visa status doesn't change that at all, so no need to cancel any visas.
Skippy1
I would suggest at this stage you should get citizenship before you go back if you are entitled to it. Otherwise you have wasted 4 plus years. Spend the little extra time and sort it out if you have to go and then at least you have options
Rom Pom
Thanks for the advice. I thought the PR allowed you to 'stay indefinitely' am I missing something about the advantages of citizenship other than making you vote?
VERYSTORMY
Although you keep pr for ever, the travel right expires after 5 years from grant. So, if you one day wanted to come back, you may not be able. However, citizenship means you can come back when ever you want.
MaggieMay24
PR allows you to remain indefinitely but as VeryStormy said, the travel rights only last 5 years. You could perhaps try to get a Resident Return Visa down the road if you want to move back, but if you can't demonstrate sufficient ties to Australia then that would likely be refused and you'd need to start over applying for PR again.
