Bridging Visa Confusion

P189

Recommended Posts

I'm currently on a 457 and have applied for 189

I am travelling this week and went to apply for a Bridging Visa B. (Everywhere I read this is advised). However at the immigration office they would not give be a BVB as I already had a 457 (which does not expire till 2016).

The officer said even if my 457 was cancelled while abroad (its not likely to be) then I could still re enter Australia for 90 days and the BVB is immaterial in this case.

I'm wondering if this is correct?

Also would this effect my residency status for citizenship?

thanks for the help

Even if you lost your job while overseas, you'd still have 90 days before any action would be taken by DIBP towards cancelling your 457 visa. The fact that you have a 189 application in process would probably convince them to let your application process run without taking any action on the 457.
