P189
I'm currently on a 457 and have applied for 189 I am travelling this week and went to apply for a Bridging Visa B. (Everywhere I read this is advised). However at the immigration office they would not give be a BVB as I already had a 457 (which does not expire till 2016). The officer said even if my 457 was cancelled while abroad (its not likely to be) then I could still re enter Australia for 90 days and the BVB is immaterial in this case. I'm wondering if this is correct? Also would this effect my residency status for citizenship? thanks for the help
P189
ok more or less found the answer here: http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/migration-issues/219374-travelling-overseas-whilst-awaiting-decision-186-visa.html Still find lots of places where people still recommend the BVB
VERYSTORMY
You can not get a BVB while you have a 457.
MaggieMay24
You would only apply for a BVB if your BVA had taken effect or would take effect while you planned to be overseas. You can simply travel on your 457 as needed until your 189 is approved.
P189
Thanks! My only convern is what about if something happens to my 457 while overseas? Its not likely but unfortunately I do work in a pretty fickle mining industry right now.
MaggieMay24
Even if you lost your job while overseas, you'd still have 90 days before any action would be taken by DIBP towards cancelling your 457 visa. The fact that you have a 189 application in process would probably convince them to let your application process run without taking any action on the 457.
