Giving birth in Australia

Not me. I believe in finding a Doc I like rather than worrying about paying a measly $30 bucks!

@parleycross its because everyone " thinks" the NHS is free forgetting the NI payments obviously.

Good to hear that QSS! It used to amaze me that most posts on here instructed "find a bulk billing doctor" and did a straw poll of my Aussie colleagues - they were gobsmacked to say the least. I'm a great fan of continuity of care with someone I like and whose judgment I respect!

Do people really believe everything should be free ?

I don't mind paying for things as long as I know upfront roughly how much. In the case of my pregnancy scans, I was willing to pay more for the specialist place to do them. Though I am a bit annoyed that the second of those scans was completely inaccurate - I think the sonographer saw the words 'gestational diabetes' and made a lot of assumptions (subconsciously) about what she expected to see and therein came the apparent massive growth of baby. Add to that the fact that the report had the baby's position as opposite to what was apparent on the images and I do feel that my $250 was wasted.

Having said all that, I am very glad that I didn't have to pay for all the care I needed during my pregnancy (and the previous one that I lost), because not only would it have been very pricey, it also would have been much less integrated and more difficult to coordinate. I just turned up to the one clinic and saw whoever I needed to. The experience of my friends from mums' group who had their babies privately was that the lactation advice they received seems to be very much inferior to that provided by the public hospital. One of the good things about public care is that there is a degree of uniformity in terms of policy and approach, and in general it is evidence-based, whereas private practice is free to do whatever it likes for whatever reason it deems appropriate.

Ultimately, though, I could never put a price on getting my precious baby here safely, and if we'd had to pay we'd have found the money somehow.

Thank you for this thread! I've been wanting to enquire about the pregnancy care in Aus, but didn't have a clue how to word it... We're hoping to migrate in 12+ months & we're also itching to have a sibling for our 18 month old; I didn't know whether to get down to business ASAP before we leave, or hold fire till we landed.

I guess now now my options are to do either... Or both :)

Rather than the medical side of it, I'd be thinking more about maternity pay and where you'd be better off for that.
